Metro 2033 kind of takes you on a personal journey where you start to feel some emotion and empathy towards human life stuck in the metro in a post apocolyptic Russia. You are in Moscows underground and the protagonist has to go on a mission through the metro to deliver something a make some things right a long the way. It has short, personal, internal monologues at the start of every level which I loved and the game is quite eery, spooky, dark and gritty.

Bioshock Series - you really need to put some hard work into this game, to understand the series, their voices, the environment, the caracters, specially their comments and the city himself in era 1950'/60'. Other game series at the moment that could reach the level of Bioshock that makes you to stop your gameplay for a moment and putting you on thinking, I really don't know. From my experience I mean. I didn't played every game. Maybe Max Payne Series too because is the type of action like Heavy Rain. Their are similar in some things from the videos I've seen on youtube (as emotions)

The game is very emotional in the entire gameplay and somehow sad because if you look deep into it, describes the world that is now and not much of it has changed (reference to the human characteristics and mind). And specially putting little girls at young age in the story, really messing with your feelings. I could say the game series are like a book well made. The game is not so much of horror, is just has some little blood there and there, you will get used with it.

Is interested to read more about the game after you have finished them, on their wikia official page.

EDIT : Yes, Metro 2033 is another good option. I really forgot about him.

Final Fantasy XIII is a very emotional game connected to its characters. Even if its not rated M.

Thats the worst piece of crap game I've played in a while. Even for a J-RPG.

I'll second Assasins Creed II. It can be quite poignant. If thats a word.

Have a look at Dreamfall and if you don't mind older games, The Longest Journey. Both are story driven and very well done.

I'll second the Bioshock recommendation. It's not so much emotional but rather it makes you think. Lots of dealings with man's control over man, morals/ethics, controlling one's own destiny etc. All mixed in with some pretty good gameplay and graphics. All in all it's a great standalone piece and one of the more thought provoking games out there that can't be easily replicated.

Boy am I glad they didn't bastardise the IP with a pointless sequel and unnecessary multiplayer.

MGS series.

I agree with this, Starting from MGS1 right up to MGS4 will give you a lot of emotional moments.

There are not many games that evoke strong emotional responses from me.

The Mass Effect series. If you don't just burn through the game and you do all the side missions and such, you really form bonds with the team you assemble. And then you have to make decisions that can have them killed, or even have to decide whether to send one person to their death to save another.

Ocarina of Time. It used to get me a little choked up when watching the scenes during the end credits.

I'll also agree with Assassin's Creed II. You see your father and brothers, one only a child, get betrayed and executed for crimes they didn't commit, and that pretty much motivates you to the end.

What does the rating have to do with anything? Does saying 'f*ck' and 'sh*t' make the characters even MORE gripping?

Maybe to teenagers.

GEARS OF WAR IS REALLY GRIPPING!

I wouldn't say its thought provoking as much as it sticks with you afetr you're done. It's Earthbound (SNES). I'm sure you can find ways of playing it (for free).

Or Mother3 (get the fan translation) on the GBA (get an emulator). It's really a great game, and very poignant.

Both are rated E, though. So I don't know if having the characters NOT say 'fffffffuuuuuck' like big buff mature men will put you off sad.gif. They're also JRPG's, but not the gay kind.

If you have a GCN, I'd recommend Paper Mario:TTYD. Like Earthbound, the characters are very lovable.

I agree, i'm still playing through and it's very gripping. Not to mention it looks brilliant too.

The Lost and Damned?

Yes indeed, I for one found the storyline of The Lost and Damned pretty good and emotional. Not in a way that it made you 'cry' but you felt like sh*t and really felt bad for all the sh*t that happened to Johnny and 'The Lost'. Heck, it's even superior to IV and TBOGT storywise and in my opinion probably the best GTA storyline to date.

Exactly.

In TLaD, I felt like I was Johnny. I felt like I was in The Lost. I felt like my brotherhood was falling apart. I felt like my brothers had been killed.

I felt rage in no way I had ever experienced inside a videogame.

RPGs

Dragon Age Origins story is quite good and the game lets you decide on far more things than being good or bad, your decisions have an impact in the outcome of the story, it's not as good as Mass Effect's story but really good nonetheless.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 (3 should be out by the end of 2011)

Knights of the Old Republic I & II. The first one is impressive and the second one is better in a lot of aspects except for the ending (the game was rushed for christmas and the ending suffered, it can be fixed with a user-created patch)

Heard the Baldur's Gate series is incredible and that so is Planescape: Torment, haven't played them though.

All these were created by Bioware.

The Fallout series, though I preffer the old ones over the new ones (because of the bugs)

FPSs

The Brothers In Arms game series is really good I have played Earned in Blood and part of Hell's Highway. Both games really suck you in role of the soldiers and the sensation of realism is great, specially in HH. Both games are tough, they're quite tactical, you cant run like crazy or go absolutely solo, you have to use the terrain, tactics and your men in your favor and they can't die, or at least they shouldn't.

Star Wars: Republic Commando. One of the best shooters I've ever played and most of its greatness comes from the story, the action is brilliant anyway.

The Cronichles of Riddick: Escape form Butcher's Bay. Everything about this game is great, it transports you to a part of the series' universe that is not portrayed in the films but the games stands brilliantly by its own merits. The story, graphics/lightning, sound, voice acting and gameplay are astounding, it's quite crude and meshes elements of RPG (side missions) stealth action (super well implemented) and shooting in a great way.

Half Life 2 and its episodes, in case you haven't played it

Portal: just soooo good.

I might be forgetting some great games but I can't remember any other

Adventure

Sanitarium and Grim Fandango. Both are point & click adventure games and both are great and quite twisted, Grim Fandango is quite tougher than Sanitarium, but Sanitarium's athmosphere is just great and it's much more obscure than the former one.

Hope this helps.

Most definitely. If your PS3 is backwards compatible you'll find that MGS3 is one of the best games ever made.
