Dutch Pavillion design

Recommended Posts

In the Netherlands, you gotta do a big project (80 workhours per person) to be able to get your diploma, so I chose to design a pavillion for the World Expo 2015 in Milan that represents the Netherlands and model it in SketchUp. Walkthrough video:

In the video there's some explanation about what the building means, what it stands for etc.

Picasa album with some renders:

What were you studying?

The video is pretty good, the design is actually awesome and goes well with the concept. I like it very much, Im not an arquitect but I can't stop feeling that your building would collapse if it were real. The facade looks too big, and heavy, for thouse thin columns (wich are not even straight). I don't know if that would impact your final score (if im right).

Not knowing what you are studying I can't give any more feedback.

nice video, and tour around your model, nice design ....also thought it was based on a boat or a house of cards that's been pro-pt up .. thanks for the DUTCH history lesson , though don't make this in the real world the structure isn't safe , would fall down ...

I'll do some other renders this evening (gotta go to work now), my own PC broke down the day before the deadline (GREAT timing btw sarcasm.gif, got it fixed just 10 minutes ago), so I didn't have the shizzle I used to have, because I was working at my dad's PC.

Did the render. Here's the SketchUp render too, from quite much the same viewangle, for comparison (click for enlargement).

SketchUp render, just unchecked "display edges" and added some shadows, nothing more:

Rendered it with Vray, I really am not an expert so the settings are quite much default:

I came up with it myself tounge.gif. The main theme of the World Expo 2015 in Milan is "Feeding the planet, energy for life". I started to think about what role or roles the Netherlands have and have had in the whole "feeding the planet". I discovered that it has been a trading country for centuries and that became my sub-subject. The country became famous as "trading country" during the Dutch Golden Age, in which it developed itself as the most important trading country in the world, thanks to the Dutch East India Company. The shipments that arrived in Rotterdam and Amsterdam were mosly stored in canal houses, which are very typical for the Netherland and especially for the cities near the coast. Suddenly the idea appeared "wouldn't it be cool to lay a facade of a canal house almost flat on the ground so you could walk on it?", but quite soon I discovered that when you lay it flat on the ground, you can't identificate it as a facade anymore, so I came up with corners in the facade. After that, I made it a boat and at the end the glassstructure formed the bow wave.

That was my progress in VERY short terms, the whole project took almost 70 hours to do and the whole paper makes up 36 pages: mostly pictures, but also text, because I had to give reasons for the choices I made in the designing progress. It was for school so I did a bunch of things that I hadn't done if it was for my self xP.
