Games are supposed to be fun, right? For most gamers, too much realism sucks a lot of the fun out of the experience, especially in MP. Of course, the definition of fun is subject to interpretation. I can tell you that I'd sooner take a belt sander to my nutsack than have to look down to check my ammo, kit or wounds in MP.

I honestly don't think a heads-up display is all that bad even when you're taking realism into account. A soldier is bound to know how many magazines and grenades he has, where the hell he's be en shot and so on. (And on that note, if you have to check where you've been shot, a magic green box ain't gonna fix you up.) Bullet count and crosshairs are in my opinion ridiculous which is why I'll always play hardcore when it's available. I'm glad BF3 is at least going to have a hardcore mode, because I won't have Project Reality to play when I get bored of being Captain America.

Yes I get your concerns for the fact that it's an approach in sake of 'realism'. But it's also an approach in making First Person Shooters more interesting with new features (not some lame perks, sh*tty "instant kill quick slash knife lunges" or other ridiculous additions).

This would in fact create totally new gameplay and never done/seen before experiences in a first person shooter. I can agree and believe how one is not in favor of realism. But I can't understand how one doesn't want new features and new experiences in a FPS game.

But anyways, anyone seen this? Battlefield 3 Map location found. Apparently we'll be visiting Basra or the area around Basra.

I hope these are just the tip of the iceberg concerning 'authenticety' and/or 'realism'.

On the subject of realism. I played Project reality, which is the epitomy of "realistic" shooters.

That was just terrible, too much realism. I could write an essay on how bad the gameflow and gameplay were. and the people I talked too who liked it pretty much said "yeah, but when you get a kill every 15 minutes, it feels pretty awesome".

The maps, were massive, I'm not talking 64 player BF2 massive, i'm talking f*cking huge. You never saw anyone, spent half the time building useless sh*t which never saw any use, and then you get killed and witness the terrible, terrible respawn system.

Realistic things that make the game cooler/better are nice. But realistic shooters as a whole, no thanks. BF2 was just the right level or realism for me.

I for one loved PR. I loved how you were forced into working as a team, I loved that you had to think before you decided to take on a f*cking squad of enemies and I loved the gunplay. ut I absolutely hated it on a bad day. It was like you say, you could walk around for minutes and not see anyone and then maybe sometimes you'd even get a kill. But when it was on a good map and full, that game was dope. I had more fun in that than I did in BF2, though I spent a lot less time playing it because when it was boring, it was boring. Shame we won't get mod tools for BF3. Pirates on Frostbite 2 would've been awesome.

Haven't read much on this game yet but I just saw the gameplay teaser trailer. I swear if you have had used BC2 or MW2 footage instead I wouldn't have told the difference. Where is the innovation?

Eh, I see what you mean. Those few times when you managed to pull off something cool with a working squad/team were great.

But lets be honest, things never really worked out that way. And they never happened often, at all.

And yeah, when it was boring, it was really f*cking boring.

What do you expect? 'Military in the desert' doesn't exactly lend itself to innovation visually. Come to think of it, the entire FPS genre doesn't really lend itself to visual creativity unless it's scifi. If there's innovation, it's going to be in the gameplay.

If there's innovation, it's going to be bringing a three story building down with a ton of enemies inside. Destruction 3.0, motherf*ckers.

However, they're hardly going to show that in a teaser trailer, are they?

A "modern combat in the desert" against probably middle-eastern or Russian forces. Get to f*ck. Going to take more than destructible environments to entice me because we've had this already. Not asking for a sci-fi thriller but shake it up just a little, folks.

I'm probably coming off as a bit of a negative nancy. Mind you I'll still probably get this game as I'm quite a supporter of BF games and anything to compete against Crock of Dipsh*ts is a good cause.

But who am I to judge a game so far off from release? I'll keep my eye on it.

@The Killa: Let me guess, you want another full Vietnam or WWII Battlefield? If that's the case, then I also want more of those. While I believe Battlefield 3 will be great, there is a certain amount of awesomeness that comes with using iron sights on most weapons. All the gun customizing is great and everything, but I'd prefer that it's not always done. Hell, I'd rather be able to carve words or phrases into my gun than throwing a red dot sight or ACOG scope onto it.

I wouldn't mind one of those, really. It's not that I dislike the modern desert combat atmosphere, just the fact it's been done for the umpteenth time by 10 different game series.

Ever see that one image (posted here I believe? Cannot recall) of 3 game screenshots side-by-side that looked exactly like eachother? CoD, Killzone and one other. Same gun, same scope, same atmosphere. It's been done to death now. Which is probably the reason why I'm playing DoD: Source and BF Vietnam more than any other FPS right now, and looking forward to the new Red Orchestra. Because really, lets be honest, these realistic modern shooters really lack a fun factor.

My only question is how much longer we'll be in this setting. Until the next war breaks out and we have new material?

Where should we be fighting? Desert fighting may be overdone a bit, but I can see why -- the whole 'that's what's happening in the world right now so it's relevant and believable'. As much as I'd like to see things shaken up, I don't really see how that could happen. Picking a random country out of a 'non-desert countries' hat would be just as tiresome and lacking in originality. We've seen jungles and woodland way too much with all the WWII FPSs of last generation and tundra is just too dull long-term.

It sounds like B3 is going to have plenty of urban combat which sounds refreshing. Some good downtown gunfights between modern skyscrapers is something I haven't seen much and would really like to see more of. And I really hope future FPSs aren't afraid of MW2 comparisons and go for the war-town suburbia style. Love or hate MW2, but those missions were some of the most memorable gaming moments of my life. After driving on I95 almost every day for 7 years, it was really haunting to hear; "We've got enemy fighters over I95!" *sounds of chaos* "How the hell'd they get through!?" then spend 30 minutes fighting through typical suburban back yards and shopping centers.

I feel inclined to agree with this. Some of the mission settings for MW2 were amazing.

Yeah man. All those suburban and DC missions in MW2 were actually quite original and very entertaining.

Battlefield 3 reminds me of Black. Anyone remember Black?

Well i do, and B3 sounds alot like that game. Hopefully they'll make a better SP for this than BC2, i know no one buys Battlefield for the SP but BC2's sp was crap. I want to see if they can actually make a serious sp campaign.

I love a good singleplayer campaign, but I haven't yet experienced a common shooter with a SP that stands out (unless I count Crysis as a common shooter).

Does anyone know if BF3 is happening at the GDC today or if that's been scrapped? I can't find anything but old news on the Internet.

EDIT: Have a video about

to make this particular post less useless.

EDIT 2: thanks!

I see where you are coming from.

I'm not a mad FPS war game enthusiast. Well I'm kinda getting back in to it. On the PS2 I played the Medal Of Honors, Men of Valor, Black and a little bit of Black Hawk Down on the PC which was amazing but now I'm trying to get myself back in to that sort of genre with COD 4. Since there's no new GTA to play with my mates online I figured I'll pick up COD and join the herd. Haven't played those sort of games in years until now.

As to what you were saying, I think there is a limited choice or not much creativity in terms of location. I played Black Ops on my mates PS3 and there was a map set at a launch pad which I thought was interesting. I was quite impressed with the bases in Just Cause and I'd love to see more of that stuff.

I suppose there's a limit as to where you can set it. Homefront looks like it's doing something different by taking it to the suburbs.

How about a modern day full on battle ground in a city like New York or Las Vegas. World War 3 job? Might sound far-fetched but it would be interesting to see famous landmarks destroyed and fighting on the streets and in buildings etc.

Just finished the mission in Pripyat in COD 4 and it was probably my favourite mission so far.

Sorry if I went off topic.

That's one of the most clichéd things in media that depicts the US under attack.

Like AreXi said, pretty funny considering we know there's a level set in New York.
