GTA 4 is better optimized for PC. + vibe and gameplay and driving is better.

Maybe it's better to have the Sleeping Dogs V GTAIV comparison in a thread all by itself? I think they're both great in their own ways. I'm grateful for SD coming out this year because there's such a huge wait in between GTAs.

I just got up to the end of the mission where Wei is made a Red Pole. It'd be a huge amount of work for the devs, and change what kind of game it is majorly, but it'd be great if the story could fork into two paths at that point. The player has to choose if Wei keeps toeing the police line, or if he goes over to the other side, and puts his loyalty into the Triads.

I bet at least 70% of people would choose the Triads the first time through.

Also, been doing a bunch of the races. Really like how they're not a walk-over. Got a bunch of face up to face 8. Basking in the awesomeness of the Enter The Dragon yellow jumpsuit. biggrin.gif

Algonquin Assassin
Sleeping dogs vs Gta IV - Your opinions?

GTA IV, but only just. Sleeping Dogs was a hit for me. Much better than the likes of the Saints Row games, JC2 etc IMO.

It has potential to be a really awesome franchise. smile.gif

It already is a franchise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Crime_(series)

(Oh yes, I know, its technically not part of it but shut up)

(non spoiler bit)

Anyway, I finished the story today. I don't know, I felt the ending suffered a bit from Ending Fatigue. Its like its about to end... but then it doesn't and there's another scene and I think this is the end... but then there's another scene and... it still doesn't end! Argh.

Overall though, it was a good ending, better than most I've played recently, it summed up the plot nicely while still leaving things open with some alternative character interpretation.

(spoiler bit)

One scene I wish that was in there was a scene where Jackie or one of Wei's allies finding out he's undercover. I felt that it was being foreshadowed throughout the entire game and when it didn't happen I was a little bit disappointed. The fact that Wei never really reveals to his Triad friends that he was a cop was definitely missing. It would have also made it more tragic for Jackie, as the only person whom he ever trusted turned out to be playing him the entire time, which would have been a twist on what usually happens in GTA (we're the ones being betrayed). Could have been really dramatic, but it never happened, considering how much it foreshadowed early on. Also, was anyone really surprised when Pendrew turned out to be evil? From the moment he opened his mouth I could tell he was going to be butt f*cking everyone in the plot. James Hong was also underused.

To expand upon what I said in the non spoiler bit, the game should have ended at the docks with Raymond. Furthermore, how much time passed before we see Wei at his house? He gets sliced, drilled, hammered, shot and pistol whipped, surely he wouldn't just heal instantly? It would probably be a few months? That definitely lost a lot of pacing in the final stages, it should have finished when Wei met Raymond at the stage and somehow tied everything else in there somehow.

Been playing this for a few hours, and I'm quite enjoying it. The initial key bindings for the PC version are completely counter intuitive, though, the driving is atrocious and the camera just so immensely sluggish.

I got it over the weekend due to my birthday - I got both this and Max Payne 3 for £50 which is a damn steal.

So far I'm quite enjoying the game, although I too found the driving to be really crappy and the camera to really not help certain situations. I'm kind of lost on what the hell some of the map icons are for too. And no idea that there are these secret boxes to find with cash in and stuff. Weird. I think I just need more time on the game though.

  • Dark Blue Icon - Police mission
  • Green Icon - Triad Mission
  • Light Blue Icons - Drug Bust missions
  • Yellow/black Icons - Races (depends on what class cars/bikes you have bought)
  • Orange Icon - random events
Other icons are for clothes, food and massages. The "secret boxes" either give you money, clothes or a gun. Date the girlfriends and the collectables become visible on the map.

Sleeping Dogs doesn't have a difficulty setting and that's where the clothes, massages and food are for. Each of them give you a small bonus and you can stack them. So eat a pork bun, have a drink and a massage. That way you do more damage with your melee fighting and gain more face-points.

*edit*

For people playing on the pc, you must try this graphics mod, it's awesome!

Almost like the ENB mod for GTA IV but then for Sleeping Dogs cool.gif

You increase them during storyline missions. Triad points are increased by killing bad guys basically and you can earn up to three stars. You get three police points automatically at the start of a mission but you lose them for killing innocents, destroying property, theft etc. You can get different outfits to boost the amount of Triad points and Police points you get.

Most likely. I can't even run the game on the highest settings as it is, even without the high-res texture pack. The input delay goes through the roof whenever I try, and the fan on my graphics card goes berserk. i5 2500K, 8GB RAM, GTX 580. I doubt it would even start with the texture pack, and the ENB mod.

No, this mod does not affect your framerate because it's a simple version of the SweetFX mod.

The simple version only does post-processing, so *after* your graphics card has rendered the picture it applies a few filters on it, like tone-mapping and texture-sharpening. It works the same as the "noise effect" filter in The Lost and Damned and that had no impact on the framerate too.

And it's very easy to try for yourself. Just put the files in the same directory where the HKShip.exe is and start the game. With the Scroll Lock key you can put the mod on or off.

So, by any chance, is there a mod/hack out there that would allow me to bind the arrow keys to control movement? I'm having a really hard time trying to use WASD after having used the arrow keys for every game that I've played so far.

Don't think there's a mod yet but you can do it with a macro program like http://www.autohotkey.com/

It has "remap keys" in the feature list. Haven't tried it myself though.

Do know that AutoHotkey is flagged as third party software by some anti-cheat systems, like Punkbuster.

Thanks for the heads up because that's certainly something to keep in mind. I guess it's best to only enable AutoHotKey when playing Sleeping Dogs.

Anyway, I just tested if keymapping works and it does.

Up::WDown::SLeft::ARight::DPgUp::UpPgDn::DownDel::LeftEnd::Right

I copied this to the sample script that you see when you start AutoHotKey for the 1st time and could use the arrow keys for driving. And the other keys for the phone, gun and radio. So AutoHotKey is usefull although I wouldn't recommend it anymore to avoid PunkBuster problems.

Does this game even need ENB? The End shots look worse, just brighter and more contrasted, that's about it, but the overall colour tone of the shots have been lost.

Well, I don't play on a monitor but use a beamer and this mod does make the game look better. But then again, for me the game looked great already so no, I don't think this game needs it like GTA IV does.

It's worth a try though, especially since it doesn't affect the framerate.

For those of you who have beat the game already:

About the ending... I can't believe Wei was let off so easy. I mean yeah he kind of helped the Triad out in a big way by taking out "Big Smile" Lee but still, HE WAS A COP. It doesn't even matter that the new boss, Jiang said he was to be left alone. Maybe the more loyal higher-ups would listen to her but I think at some point some low level gangster with nothing to lose would still make a move to waste Wei Shen for just being a cop and lying about it. Maybe that can still be a possibility in a sequel. I was just expecting a much bigger ending to the story because of the way it builds and builds. Other than that...

I just want to say, though, that I really liked the game overall. The story, the kung fu, the occasional odd yet fun karaoke game, everything about the game was very well done. It's great that all the hard work the developers put into it wasn't wasted because Activision decided to jump ship. I have a feeling we might be seeing more Sleeping Dogs games in the future.

Whelps, I just finished the story. Pretty good ending but I thought it was a bit too easy finishing of Big Smile.

In the hospital security vid, how much did Uncle Po look like Yoda?

For me, the hardest part was the first 10 or so missions before I'd got the hang of the hand-to-hand system, and before I'd gained some of the melee skills.

There's an interesting interview with the exec producer at the SD website, and a couple of times he says that a project like that is never really finished -- in the end you have to just walk away form it at some point. And I kind of agree -- there's a bunch of little things that are annoying about the game that I wish they'd had a bit more time to polish.

Little things like the crap turning circle on the first motorbike you get.

BUt it's a great story. Even a couple of years ago before I'd heard anything about this game I was playing GTA-IV and thinking there'd be a lot of potential for a story in LC where you played an undercover/ double agent kind of guy.

I still like GTA4 heaps better, but I don't think you can compare them. Eventhough SD is a couple (3? 4?) years more recent in production, I'm guessing that SD's budget was _half_ of what GTA4's was.

Once I got the hang of the hand-to-hand it got a lot more fun. There's still heaps of moves I haven't mastered.

I think they made finding the hidden things too easy by putting them on the map.

As you noticed, Jiang appears to be much more reasonable than Big Smile Lee. She wants the Sun On Yee not to be known for porn and human trafficking.

Sure Wei is a traitor because he is a cop. But after all, he stood loyal to Jiang, Uncle Po and the Water Street Gang.

And the fact that he is a cop, could turn out to be quite useful for Jiang.

Can you see my junk now?

I like that you can drive all the boats including the big trawler looking things.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I had a couple extra bucks in my PSN wallet and got the '80s retro triad DLC pack. Definitely worth it, at least compared to the other DLC they offer.
