Very odd "lag" with high end laptop, please read

Recommended Posts

So I'm running GTAIV on my laptop (i7-740QM approx 1.73Ghz, 2x Radeon HD 5850's approx 2GB video ram, 8GB DDR3 normal RAM, etc) so it runs all PC games really well. TF2 / CS:S i get 200-300 frames per second with ease.

So the issue at hand, when I run benchmarks on GTAIV I get a whopping 25 FPS on any settings, i can put them at all low or all high and i get 25-30 FPS.

This is a major annoyance, when I drive a vehicle or run, every 3 seconds it goes into a slow-motion type settings for maybe .5 of a second, this LOOKS like FPS lag but it's not.

Is there a fix for this? It's hard to explain so I suppose I will make a video if anyone requests it so I can showcase the problem better. I have no idea what's going on with this game.

It's on steam yes, why does that make me out of luck? It's set to auto-update and why would it being on that version help? Thanks for any info on this.

It's a laptop and I've never used ATI cards, I don't really know how to check if CrossFire is on, i have tried changing the V-Sync option on/off with no in-game differences.

Basically, i believe it comes down to changing one option, whether it be a ATI one out of game, or an in-game Display option. Since I know these cards do work effectively and I should be getting around 50-60 fps at the least for GTAIV with high settings let alone all low settings with no option bloom etc.

THANKS FOR HELP! I'm very clueless with this.

I had a similar problem on a laptop using a ATI 5870 and it was Driver related. However, if you are on the latest patch then you won't get any better performance. Only patch 1.0.04 will give you that.

Thanks for CCC Fire option, and why does 1.0.0.4 help?

You sure you have 2 graphics cards, right?

I have a different version of CCC, so I'm not sure where the CrossFire option would be on your CCC (it looks like a newer version). I suggest you try all those listed option and see if you can find anything related to CrossFire.

Also, the 1.0.4.0 patch is said to be the best patch, performance wise.

Patches 1.0.04 has given many the best performance and in the latest patch, they introduced a new type of shadow system which taxes the GPU so much they said it had future hardware in mind. You can potentially lose up to 50% performance by going from patch 1.0.04 to the latest. Even lowering settings didn't help matters much for some.

I play at the latest patch on my laptop because they fixed the sniping people in cars from a distance and the shadows look a lot better, but I am forced to accept lower performance unless I go back to patch 1.0.04.

AMD's newer drivers suck for GTA IV. I just upgraded to a 6870 from my old GTX 260 and while I get great FPS in-game there is a good amount of stutter with 1.0.7.0. EFLC is almost un-playable. Hopefully AMD will fix GTA IV issues in a up-coming driver. At least for me i'm limited to only 2-3 different driver options that support the 6870 since its only 2-3 months old. The 6870 is tearing through every other newer game I have.
