Roll back to previous patch?

Recommended Posts

My specs:

i5 460M, 8 GB RAM, Intel GMA HD

Please don't just say, "get a new computer!", cause I know my GPU sucks. The reality is, though, that it's more powerful than you think -- if not for the brand, it would easily be within the minimum specs to get the game running. And that's all I want to do: get it running so I can tweak the settings and determine on my own if it's worth playing.

Soooo...I really, really hope someone has something helpful to say, cause I've spent a week trying to get past the R* logo to the main menu! A few seconds after the second page of text (legal / copyright info, etc.) I get this lovely thing:

"TEXP70 Unable to create depth render target - Please re-install DirectX and/or install the latest video card driver."

I have tried every solution I could find: reinstalling the game, reinstalling GFWL, reinstalling R*SC, reinstalling C++ Redistributable, and updating everything from DirectX to your mom. I finally gave in and tried some illicit fixes, but even those just led to more errors.

From what I've read in my research (please correct me if I'm wrong), it seems that a previous patch -- possibly the most recent one? -- removed support for Intel GMAs. In other words, somewhere in the loading process it checks the GPU manufacturer and throws that error...not because my computer is incapable of running the game, but because R* has a beef with Intel GMAs. To be honest, that's understandable for the older chipsets, but I can play Crysis for crissakes! Far Cry 2, Mass Effect 2, Oblivion, Dragon Age, and other relatively recent games run just fine. The hardware is NOT the problem.

I bought the game on Steam so it was already updated to the latest version. Does anyone know a way to roll back to a previous patch? If not that, what about spoofing another GPU? I tried 3D-Analyze, but then SecuLauncher shuts me down before the game even starts. Does anyone have experience with this sort of issue?

I would appreciate any and all ideas / thoughts / suggestions. I'll say again, though, that I know it's not a "real" GPU and I don't care. It is crappy, but so's your face.

Other than the fact that IV's an arse to run on PCs, and that Intel GMAs are known to be piss-poor for modern systems (yeah, sure, you can run Crysis on that, but the fact is that IV is way too demanding and stuff), you might try on downgrading to an older revision, like that girishb said.

Yes, it is a laptop. I crammed a ton of RAM in to it because it (the memory) was on sale, and it's my first 64 bit computer so why not? How do I downgrade the patch if I bought it on Steam? I'm new to Steam, and I couldn't find it in any of the options. I posted the same on the Steam forums and nobody has gotten back to me about it. How do you downgrade it even if you aren't using Steam?

FWIW, I tried -- just as an experiment -- a "loaned" copy of the original retail release, and I was able to start the game. So, I'm positive that it's a patch that's preventing me from playing my paid-for copy. It runs like garbage, but using the -availablevidmem option I am able to tweak the graphics some. I would prefer to play the game that I paid for, not someone else's copy....

I see your point. I've read about plenty of people with "real" GPUs having trouble with it. I suppose I shouldn't expect it to run...thanks for your reply!
