trip
I had a hunch and I feel it was validated today after reading an article and then doing some lite research. So...get ready to unload that 2600. Keep in mind I am no expert in the retro gaming market but I have been loosely involved for maybe 20 years now. The interest comes and goes in waves. We are just getting ready for a quick high point thanks to Atari and Intellivision releasing new hardware with a focus on nostalgia meeting 21st century technology. I've been sitting on 2 Intellivision during the past handful of soft years but it looks like they are back to $300 packages. This wave won't last long. 2600s loose with a handful of loose carts are bringing close to $200 ($100 low end). I predict we have maybe 3 or 4 months before they both drop down to dirt cheap. DarksunDaFirst
So last month I moved to my new house. Packed up pretty much everything myself (again), but this time we hired movers (mainly because I agreed with my wife that I didn't want to do everything by myself again...and we had 5 years worth more of furniture and stuff since our last move). I have a lifetime to unpack though, because I'm pretty much considering this my "forever" house. So while I was moving my basement and throwing out a ton of stuff, I came across a box I must not have opened in several years and found some of my old Sega games. Some from when I was a kid, some I bought later just to have. And I found my original "Spy Vs. Spy" card (not cartridge) and I just really wanted to play it. But unforunately I don't actually have the console. So in my area there are a few classic gamers stores that resell a lot of items, and one I knew of and passed by several times and I keep eyeing the systems they have. So I went to this store this past weekend after I came across the box again, wife had taken the kids somewhere (I don't know where, it was Father's Day weekend...Dad time), and yes...they had an original Sega MS with two controllers for sale. Score. Bought that puppy for around $100, took it home and hooked it up to my old TV and converter...and ahhhh, what beautiful 8-bit glory. I just absolutely loved that game. Soon after I threw in some Alex Kidd in Miracle World, got to play some Rock-Paper-Scissors (damn, these guys are f***ing pros). Then finally I put in the mother of all SMS games...the JRPG that set the tone for the rest to follow....Phantasy Star. Ahhhhhhh....I was in heaven. Then the kids came home. I just loved that old SMS....it was so nice and powerful, always thought it was superior to the NES. NES had the better marketing and overall probably the more rounded game library. SMS though had more direct arcade-to-console ports...so many of your old arcade favorites were right there in your living room. Because it had more power than the NES, you could get a lot more of these games...though sometimes not fully up to the arcade counterparts (Altered Beast for example did not have the 3rd level which had the, iirc, Polar Bear in an ice world...it went direct to the underground ruins with the Tiger). Ahhhh good times. trip
Guest
At last, Sony are releasing a mini Playstation December this year. Just in time for Christmas! If you want a PS mini I suggest pre ordering ASAP before ebay scalpers buy up stock and sell them for £200+. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45574301

I tried one game and the input lag was horrendous. The only reason I have a PS4 is for Bloodborne. Otherwise, Xbox seems to be doing everything right. Guest
Just finished cleaning a Dreamcast. Used diluted bleach to clean the console shell like I did with the printer top I cleaned in a earlier post. It worked well. Cleaned the console but refused to get rid of the dreaded yellow staining. Even with non diluted bleach. Shocking. I picked this up from my local supermerket for £2.00 Looking at various websites the recommended level of peroxide for cleaning plastic is 15-18%. The brand I used had 12%. Covered the console and accessories with product and wrapped it in cling film. Placed the pieces in direct sun light for 3 hours at approx 20C and boom mother nature did it's trick. Here are a few before and after pics. owl-man
Looks like I'm going to have to get a Sega Saturn at some point, picked up a game for one because the case art looks pretty cool. Spoiler It's got some b a b e s in the manual too, apparently they voice your navigation or something. Also I managed to lose track of my screen modded GBA, my GBA SP, DSi XL and my SNES after moving house. Really need to find them. elfoam

Also you are very wise on the WII, These are running a custom unofficial version of retroarch for the WII that can set arcade perfect resolutions for each game. Mister Pink
Some retro-based gaming documentaries for your viewing pleasure. Haven't watched this one but it's got a lot of the heads from King of Kong in it. Looks good. And probably my favourite documentary: King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters. The documentary has one of the best narratives I've ever seen in a documentary. trip 1 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿
Algonquin Assassin
So out of curiosity I hooked up my old PS2 since the last time I played it was in 2014 and lord behold it still works. I'm blown away lol. Lucky when I bought a new 4K TV it came with AV ports otherwise I wouldn't be able to play it. It's a little dusty so I'll give it a good clean, but it booted up straight away. On my memory card I have a save of Vice City from 2014 and The Warriors from 2012 to put things into perspective how long I played it for. I've had a few PS2s and if I remember I got this one in 2002. I would probably consider the PS2 to be my favourite Playstation since it had so many iconic games some of which I still have. It's quite a stark contract next to my PS5 LMAO. Amazing to see how much has evolved over the last 20 years. I'm so pumped the old beast still works because I wouldn't mind tracking down some old PS2 games I used to have like The Getaway, Scarface and The Godfather. Algonquin Assassin
I’ve just been okay Gran Turismo 4 for the first time in over a decade (which is easily my favourite Gran Turismo game) and I’m amazed by how well it holds up even after being spiked by the latest 4K generation of gaming. However it seems I’m a little rusty on how the PS2 works lol. Firstly I tried a couple of PS1 games and was stumped why the memory card wasn’t working. I forgot that you need PS1 memory cards for PS1 games and PS2 memory cards for PS2 games. Then they was loading the disc. At first I thought the laser had fried or something after sitting dormant for so many years, but it just needed time to load up the disc. I guess I’m so used to the PS5’s batsh*t insane loading times it was quite jarring. I still can’t believe it still works though. I even tried hooking up my old PS3, but it just died. I remember it randomly shutting off which is probably one of the reasons I packed it away. It didn’t sound good when it started up. Probably something power related which is a real shame, but at least the good ole PS2’s working. Algonquin Assassin
I’ve really been hitting the retro stuff hard over the last couple of months. Just bought myself a few PS2 games online. One of which is a new copy of Final Fantasy X-2 which I got for like $30 AUD which wasn’t too bad I thought. I’m curious to see what it’s like and I guess it isn’t factory sealed otherwise the price would’ve been insanely high. Still the thought of buying a new PS2 game in 2021 is pretty nuts to me. I also ended up buying a new PS1 memory card so I can start saving PS1 games again on my PS2. It’s funny because we all complain about the storage space on our PS5, Series Xs etc, but these little fellas are only 1MB and I remember losing them regularly back in the day lol. I guess we just take things like this for granted as technology evolves and how much easier we have it now. I definitely wouldn’t want to still be forking out money for new memory cards with only a few MBs. That SSD looks great now. Though I like being able to pop the disc in and playing immediately on my PS2 without waiting for it to install or getting hit with a random update or something. trip
Longish ramble ahead: At the risk of repeating myself ; I happen to have 3 arcade machines on the first floor in my house. MAME boxes that date back to 2001(original 70's/80's cabinets)...coin-op, with locked coindoors and all. They are never powered down...never! Naturally they need to have some hardware refreshed now and then. Now is one of those times. Always a pain in the ass but kind of worth it in the end. Normally I use standard PC hardware. I'm an arcade purest so I'll spare ya'll my MAME history and philosophical requirements needed fulfilled to be considered "arcade". Anyway...I thought I would try moving the arcade machine that needs a hardware refresh to Raspberry Pi. Done. Well, half done. I still have to move the pi into the cabinet and all that. -All the above can be skipped- After setting up a Raspberry Pi with Retro Pi and moving over many thousands of roms...I went against all of my beliefs and played a game of Donkey Kong on my big ass TV. The survival mode where the cops just try to destroy you as quickly as possible was real good fun. It's also infamous for having an annoyingly difficult tutorial level before you can start the true game. I probably struggled a little bit, but didn't find it that bad. I did use a controller, though, which prob made it easier. Funny story about that and how retarded I am. When configuring the controller layout in the options menu, it wouldn't let me go back. At all. It just made a honking noise and I was stuck on that screen. Convinced the game is broken, I find an 800 number somewhere on the game case and call it up for support. Wait on hold for probably like 45min or something, but determined to let them know that their game is broken. Finally got someone on the line and he's like "...you have two commands assigned to the same key." And that was the end of that conversation. Mister Pink
Just bought a hard-modded original Xbox. Unfortunately it doesn't play my disc for for The Warriors but it does play my Max Payne 1 & 2 discs! Was playing Max Payne last night and that game.. man.. it's still so good! Installed on the drive is Driv3r, Outrun 2006, Manhunt, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and Underground, Far Cry, Rainbow 6: 3. It outputs at 480p but apparently I can get a cable for it to output 720p and 1080i in some cases. Pretty good! Has a 100gb hardrive too. And the controller.. man, I thought it would be weird holding the controller but it fitted perfectly. It's a great controller, minus the fact that there is no L1/R1 just triggers. But there is black and white button. It's got some emulators too; Nintendo, Sega Mega-Drive etc. Playing Robocop vs Terminator! Very happy with this purchase.
