So I was wandering around my city looking for a nice winter jacket and me julie spotted some Super Mario sh*t in a small window. I went in to the shop which turned out to be a gaming shop which is sort of unusual because it's on a pedestrian high street, with only shops like RiverIsland and mobile phone shops etc. But, this shop is selling old Gamecubes and old Xbox etc. It's been so long since I've seen an old Xbox. So, first thing I did was to check out what games they had for PS2 and Xbox. Man, GTA: LCS, Vice City, GTA III and more importantly for me recently, The Warriors. I bought it for my Xbox thinking it may be backwards compatible but it's not on the list. http://media.gtanet.com/gtaforums/images/html/emoticons/sad.gifI will however, buy an old Xbox to play it on though but I might get the PS2 instead as there seems to be more GTA stuff for it.

Any you guys into collecting stuff like this? I feel i'm gonna start collecting gaming consoles from now on.

I wouldn't count ps2 and xbox as retro gaming just yet, they're at the stage where they're out of date but not considered to be retro just yet, I'd wait until the next generation of consoles comes out.

Major retailers still sell brand new PlayStation 2 systems and there are still studios developing games for the console.

 

I'd hardly consider it "retro" at this point.

 

Anyway, I'm trying to decide if I want to stock up on SNES games or not. I've got mine hooked up right now, but the only games I could find for it were Super Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country. I'm hankering for some Super Mario World but it averages $30 on eBay and I'm pretty poor right now.

To answer the OP. I do collect and have a thing for gaming in the past. I have 3 full working arcade cabinets(MAMEd) that are never powered down and get lots of play time - 1 quarter at a time.

 

I also have this thing for Intellivision since I didn't have one back in the 70s since they were too expensive. I still have 2 fully working systems in their boxes as well as almost the complete library of games, all in their original packaging with instructions and overlays.

 

My wife has expressed interest in picking up a Sega Genesis in order to satisfy her nostalgic craving for Streets of Rage.

If you're ever in Australia you should checkout GameTraders. They have Atari 2600 carts on sale! Got another Wii for cheap (diff store) and plan to go down to GameTraders and pick up a stack of Gamecube games and a memory card.

It's not like I'm sneaking into a bank and robbing them blind. There's a difference between emulating Super Mario all-stars (a 25 year old game) and illegally obtaining super mario galaxy 2 (a recent game).

 

One is still on the market and harms profits if obtained illegally. The other is an old game that isn't out anymore, and the only people making money off it are private traders. I mean, sure, obtaining some artists song from 1910 through the internet without paying is TECHNICALLY bad and all. But, sh*t, the artist is dead. Same with All-Stars. The game isn't for sale anymore (temporarily disregard the 'collection').

 

I wouldn't recommend All-Stars. What you're REALLY paying for is the packaging, and nothing more. Honestly, you shouldn't feel bad about playing it on a ROM, since I seriously DOUBT most people that buy it buy it for the games. It probably took Nintendo all of 5 minutes to download the game off the internet and slap it on the disc (it is, after all, just an emulation of the old game and nothing more).

 

Any investment they made on the game was received back...in 1994. Right now it's simply milking it and releasing it again in a special edition. So, again, you're paying for the packaging, not the game itself. Since that thing didn't cost a dime to put on here.

 

Anyway, you can get all four games on virtual console for less (if you like doing things legally).

 

And I've seen the 'extras' in All-Stars. Yeah, the packaging is sexy. But the 'music CD' is just someones personal MP3 list of Mario songs, and there's only 20 of them. The booklet isn't nothing astounding either. Just a sentence by Miyamoto for each game.

First off, no I don't download music illegally. I don't download it ever really. I like to get CDs.

 

And sure there is a difference between downloading a new game and a game that is no longer being manufactured, and/or sold. But pretty much every Mario game is still being sold in one form or another. Be it on the Wii virtual console or for the DS. And like you said, you can get all the games on All-Stars for virtual console. So there is no real excuse to get a ROM for these games. The fact that it's free and easy is not one.

 

If you're looking to get some obscure SNES or Genesis game like Tiny Toon Adventures, or Golden Axe II, then yeah go for it. But Mario is still very much being sold in nearly all of his forms. Maybe not Hotel Mario.

I go to a sort of retro gaming place locally called MSX gaming or something like that and I went in specifically looking for a good copy of The Warriors and found one only to find out that it's no longer supported by the 360 library. I was majorly sh*tted.

 

I also really love all the PS1/PS2 era RPG's like Suikoden (now worth a ton if you have a copy of the first two), Vandal Hearts and Final Fantasy Tactics but most of those are now only being carried forward as DS ports which is pretty crap as well.

I think you misunderstood me completely E.A.B. I already have copies of DKC and All-Stars. I've also got a copy of Super Mario World but I can't for the life of me find it.

 

I don't see the point in using an emulator when my SNES works just fine, and honestly just feels better.

I'll be honest; I'm simply raging.

 

Raging that Nintendo re-sells old games at higher than acceptable prices. Yeah yeah, I know, business. But I seriously hate it.

 

I shouldn't have to pay 10 bucks for a ROM image. The price should reflect the work put into it. And when I pay for Castle Crashers (a game that was built from the ground up) for 10 bucks or so, I question why I'm paying the same amount for an N64 ROM image. The only work put into it was writing up a description and putting it on Nintendo's wiiware section.

 

It's absurd. I simply can't stand it nor accept it. I'll pay you 50 bucks for Galaxy 2 (even though the cost was quite possibly much lower than galaxy 1 since they simply re-used the game engine and textures). But I won't give you 35 bucks for a ROM image that took you all of 5 minutes to copy to a disc.

 

But, of course, the price, I would say, accurately reflects the cover and whole box design (booklet....maybe not the CD itself). Which is why I say that you're paying for a pretty box and booklet.

I'm not collecting retro games per se, but I do have all my Nintendo and Sega equipment jumbled up in a cupboard in the basement and every once in a while I'll rummage through it for a stroll down nostalgia lane.

 

My most coveted game still in tact is Toe Jam & Earl on Sega Genesis. Man that game was so f*cking awesome, and still is. There were lots of unique games back in the day but TJ&E just stands out as being the most badass to me for its "groovy" attitude and all around wacky gameplay, yet still being a well made game. My friend and I used to play the game from 10pm to 5am and still couldn't beat it, mostly because we had to much fun wasting time on level 0.

 

Secondly, it has the best music to feature on a video game, ever. As TJ would say, it's "Jammin'."

There is one of these stores in canberra, it in tuggeranong for any canberrans out there, although i think the shop keeper is a little lazy, there is still a poster onm the window saying "GTA IV coming soon"

Well, if you've moved on to current gen consoles such as PS3 and 360 and go back to play older consoles I'd call it retro "The word "retro" derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning "backwards" or "in past times." I know what you mean though Pat but Retro was the best way I could cover everything non-PS3, 360 & PC - stuff from the past (well, my past as I haven't played the PS2 or Xbox in about 5 years)

 

So, I went to a gaming expo thingy in my city. It had all the old consoles. Ones I never knew existed. It was so much fun. You could play all of them aswell some on giant projectors. They had classics like PacMan and this funny simple game where you had to cross the road without getting knocked down, lol.

 

Best of all, and you guys will like this...They had a GTA section with original sketches of some of the missions in GTA IV in particular the bank robbery one. It was f*ckin' sweet! Also, they had the original clothes that were animated for Max Payne, the leather jacket etc. I got pics but they're on my G/f's camera. I'l upload them and post them here.

I was going to PM you, but what the hell...

 

I have the sweetest hookup for arcade equipment. Generally I pay $100 for a full working cabinet with game and everything. Then I remove the game board and replace it with a MAME box, and rebuild the controls so as to support all the different controls needed for different games.

EDIT:In all I invest maybe $200-$300 by the end of each cabinet.

 

Totally love Paper Boy. That and Dig-Dug are the top two games my wife and I compete at. My cabinets retain all the highscores and all, so it is funny as sh*t when one of us beats the other for the #1 highscore.

I remember going to a Sony PS2 convention in the RDS years ago, this is when NFS:Underground 2 was being released, went with my dad at the time and i remember it so vividly. I remember playing all the different games back then and listening to my dad talk about how the games look so good, i thought the same. It's amazing to think how fast it's changed since then. I actually won a second PS2 that day aswell.

Also, I still consider the Xbox and the Playstation 2 relatively new consoles. Only a console more than 15 years old is 'retro' in my eyes. Turbografx-16, SEGA Genesis, SEGA Master System, NES, SNES, etc.

Nevertheless, I have over 100 NES cartridges and a fully functional Famiclone. One with a keyboard, and it has a G Basic compiler, too (why? I don't know. Do you? It does compile things on the spot, but there's no way to save what you're writing).

It runs mah original & pirate cartridges perfectly, with perfect sound/graphics/whatever emulation. I love my seven year old Famiclone. I definately have to get one of those portable Megadrives which are not made by SEGA (the Nomad sucked. all I could see after using it was that I needed another 6 batteries. I wanted to cry).

 

Nevertheless, I love retro gaming. My favourite games are GTA III, Super Mario Bros and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, XD.

Yeah I got a PS2 last week and I'm loving it. Games where I thought the graphics were amazing are just not as good as I remembered. Having said that, when I play and play the graphics are decent enough and I get used to them. Then when I put my Sexbox on after I'm like whoah, all the textures!

 

Right now i'm playing Scarface. That game is genius! Dealing coke and smuggling in to Miami from the islands, laundering money, building my empire, taking out turf and hacking people with my chainsaw to and f*ckin amazing soundtrack.

 

I bought The Warriors for Xbox but I might buy it for PS2 as I can't really afford to by an Xbox now. I must get Manhunt one and two though!

Yeah man, try it again because it is a great game. If you like the sort of empire building vibe you'll love it. It had balls for a game too, like blatantly dealing cocaine, decapitation and ability to blow off enemies limbs. Lots of fun.

 

The Warriors is one of my favourites of all time. My g/f bought me a post which is right in front of me now. Some of the games that came out from 2005 (just before the Xbox first came out) are not bad.

Yeah man, loved it, one of my all-time favourite games on the PS2. Loved getting the M4 with the shotgun and blowing people to bits! Haha.

 

Metal Gear Solid 3 is one of my all time favourites too. I could play it again and again and again and never get bored.

Yeah I got a PS2 last week and I'm loving it.

I re-bought one not so long ago, but my lass sold it. I had about 40 games for it aswell, and must say I love that console. I still want one, but as you stated, it's not the same when they become old, with the graphics looking terrrible.

 

@Topic, I'd still class myself as an older gamer, such as that I've still got my GC hooked up, and an N64 at my sisters house. I've never been a competitive gamer, so am not bothered about being upto date and having all the highscores on the new games.
