BeL0WaB0Ve
I just played GTA IV for my first time and I have always been a guy for FPS games such as Counter-Strike and Quake. Now, I know alot about tweaking and stuff like that and done most in GTA IV. It feels like my game could run smoother and the fps could be higher. Look at my benchmark here together with my specs: CPU: AMD Athlon2 X2 260 3,2GHz GFX: XFX Radeon HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 RAM: 2GB Crucial DDR2 HDD: Hitachi Desktar 500GB SATAII 7200RPM Statistics Average FPS: 38.86 Duration: 37.06 sec CPU Usage: 93% System memory usage: 85% Video memory usage: 53% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1024 x 768 (85 Hz) Texture Quality: Low Shadow Quality: Off Reflection Resolution: Off Water Quality: Low Texture Filter Quality: Tri-Linear Night Shadows: Off View Distance: 30 Detail Distance: 30 Hardware Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 5670 Video Driver version: 6.14.10.7149 Audio Adapter: HD Audio rear output AMD Athlon II X2 260 Processor File ID: Benchmark.cli Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/467005-fps-and-game-smoothness-could-be-better/ Share on other sites

Ilonie
Ur system support only medium, but you could try by turn off Vsync Under Graphics and Turn off Clip capture under GAME Turn off programs running in background Try by Overclock GPU Edited January 8, 2011 by Ilonie Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/467005-fps-and-game-smoothness-could-be-better/#findComment-1060285007 Share on other sites
YankeesPwnMets
Your still using the 6.14 drivers? UPDATE THEM. Get 10.12 2GB RAM. Not enough if you ask me. Memory swapping might lag your entire PC if you use too much RAM while playing the game A Dual Core CPU isn't good enough. GTA IV runs optimally at 3 cores or more A Radeon 5670 is kinda weak, especially with only 512 MB or RAM. I suggest you try to turn your resolution down a bit. Also maybe lower the draw distance as well Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/467005-fps-and-game-smoothness-could-be-better/#findComment-1060285062 Share on other sites

Kerinunchaku
isnt 38.86fps enough? ur system arent really a high-end so that fps would be good for ur system Edited January 8, 2011 by Kerinunchaku Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/467005-fps-and-game-smoothness-could-be-better/#findComment-1060285070 Share on other sites
lpgunit
Besides the fact that GTA IV is poorly-optimised for dual-core systems, the latest patch seems to slow things down especially in certain areas of the map. Try downgrading your game to either 1.0.4.0 or 1.0.0.4, and then set your draw and detail distance to 1. You might opt for setting your texture settings to medium or high if you want to. TopHat01
I have a similar system (except my CPU is an E8400 C2D w/ 4GB of RAM) plus the same video card and have similar framerates during normal gameplay - GTA:IV on the PC is unfortunately a poorly optimized console port, and it's very difficult to get it run exceptionally well (IE max settings w/ a 1920 X 1200 resolution) unless you have an i5/i7 and a GTX 285 or better. However, I play at 1680 X 1050, with everything on medium and average 30 FPS, but sometimes experience random drops here and there, depending on the part of city, number of cars/pedestrians, explosions, etc. You could try the -memrestrict tweak Rockstar posted to see if it improves the stuttering. I personally didn't notice much of a difference. Lastly, you could try matching your in-game graphic settings to the console equivalent settings and see if it runs any better/worse. Keep in mind that on X360/PS3 the game runs at 30 FPS. Good luck. BeL0WaB0Ve
This is what I get with these settings, almost no stutter and much more smooth gameplay than before. Statistics Average FPS: 40.80 Duration: 37.23 sec CPU Usage: 91% System memory usage: 81% Video memory usage: 61% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1024 x 768 (85 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Shadow Quality: Low Reflection Resolution: Low Water Quality: Low Texture Filter Quality: Tri-Linear Night Shadows: Off View Distance: 15 Detail Distance: 1 EDIT: "Definition" is OFF and Vsync is ON (more smooth with it on).
