Major object pop in

Hi, sorry if this has been asked a million times... Ive done a little research of my own and have looked into commandline.txt file with some command lines but i don't think there working... i can only select high textures if i use the -norestrictions line on the launcher.exe shortcut.

when i take it out, it doesn't work even though the same commandline is in the .txt file. Anyway when i put textures on high i exceed the memory gta says i can use, 497? summet like tht, i have a hd4780 with 512 mb ram, and i have 4gb system memory win 7 x64 (another 2gb stick on the way to me) the game to me actually plays better on high texture settings but because i apparently exceed what gta wants me to use it punishes me summet rotten with major object pop in (see screenshots)

Is there a way using any of the command lines to get this working, ive looked at some but like i said i don't think the command.txt is working for me.

I bought the GTAIV complete edition through steam since it was on offer (£6) again i do apologise for asking this again, im sure some of you will be going "oh dear god not another noob" blush.gif

You cannot run with high textures on that graphics card. Using the command line options to try to force more available video memory still results in bad pop-in and low fps.

In my opinion, there is no practical substitute for real VRAM. You have only two realistic options:

1. Run with lower settings.

2. Upgrade your graphics card to a single GPU card with a minimum of 1GB of VRAM, but it has to be one that performs reasonably well too.

I note that you haven't specified what CPU you have. If your CPU is insufficiently powerful, then it will bottleneck and you will gain little benefit from a more powerful graphics card.

Well your CPU seems like a good start. I reckon you would benefit from a graphics card upgrade.

If you really want to experiment with command line settings then look at this: FAQ - How do you use Commandlines ?

The option you want is "-availablevidmem" which allocates some system ram as additional vram. You should restrict yourself to values of no more than 1.35 (that means 135% of your VRAM). If you try to use values as high as 2.0 your fps will suffer badly.

But I think that like me, you'll just end up upgrading your graphics card. I started with a 9800GTX 512MB. I ended up getting a GTX 285 2GB. FYI: I run with a Core2 Quad 9450 2.66Ghz, 8GB RAM and Vista 64.

nope its not and that -availablevidmem command line worked great biggrin.gif just put it at the end of my launcher along with the - norestrictions one, obviously it helps to have more ram when using that command line? if so its a good job i have another 2gb stick on the way lol thank you smile.gif

just to add another daft question, why does GTA4 rely on your card memory for textures? i run games like fallout new vegas and s.t.a.l.k.e.r call of pripyat and the textures / mods for that rely more heavily on the amount of ram you have instead of card memory...
