Why are Christians so opressed?

The Gambling Lord

Hello. I'm actually an old member here (guess who), just forgot the old account. Anyway, I'm an atheist. I don't believe that an imaginary person actually created or even orchestrated the creation of the universe. I am a believer of science. I strongly support the Theories of Evolution and Big Bang. So here's my two cents:

I think each and every religion is being oppressed by either government or another religion. Ironically, the dominating religion actually gets more hatred than the minority religion/s. Although Roman Catholicism comprises almost 90% of the religious populace in our country, it is actually the point of hatred by other religion. Really confusing, isn't it?

I have a heck of a question in mind: If all religions (excluding Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.) have the same god, why would they attack each other? Why would they hurt each other or, to a lesser extent, compare clothing? I think religion is the biggest hoax ever created in time. I presume the Middle-Eastern nomads are laughing their asses off because they've fooled the believers. I'm lucky my parents were both atheists. We don't celebrate Easter, Christmas, Bill Clinton's birthday and the like. We just treat such events as another day to tackle with. We make productive things during these periods. We either work/study or have a bonding time. No extravagant decorations. Why celebrate Christmas? Why would not we just try to help those who are in need? Like the children of Bangladesh, who are starving to death...

...and to think the Pope wore a luxurious ring enough to feed quarter of a million people in a single day? Such ignorance. Sorry for the "offense", but it's free speech.

For every Christian killed in the modern world a much larger amount of Muslims get killed.

There's a difference, Muslims are killing each other.

...and Christians aren't? Here's a modern day example: the Protestants and the Catholics fighting in Northern Ireland.

Just to butt in here...that they aren't. Haven't been for about a decade now.

I'm taking a bit of leeway with the word modern.

I am Christian. I believe everything the bible has told me but you don't give a good argument. I say this because every religion gets bashed by another or atheists. I lived in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, and I have seen Christians constantly bashing the Muslims and I have seen Muslims that are bashing the Christians.

@GrandMaster Smith Wouldn't it be possible for the people to find out about these things from another source than a god? And where in the Bible does it say that Earth is spherical? I remember it said somewhere it was round which is not the same with spherical, also Earth is not a sphere actually. Edited by Claude Speed.

...when I was 5 and I was punished at school for refusing to pray to God.

Damn, at the age of 9 I even got detention for telling people that Darwin was right and the Bible was wrong.

Hated primary school. So much.

See, I don't agree with you being punished under the rules of separation of church and state. Then again, I see by your flag that you're from the UK and I'm not sure if you guys have the equivalent of separation of church and state. The only reason I say that is because as a Canadian, Elizabeth II is our head of state as well and if I recall, she's the head of the Church of England, so there is no separation between church and state as it is represented by the same person. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

That's an extremely flimsy connection between monarch and religion. Canada and the UK have weaker Separation of Church and State than America but regardless it has nothing to do with our Queen. There is no state religion in Canada and thus the Queen being head of the Church of England doesn't mean anything for anybody who isn't a member of the Church.

The separation of church and state doesn't govern all of the schools that are set up and claim to be "Church of England" or something like that. He wasn't punished by the church but by a school which operates under the faith of the church.

I don't really think that we have a smaller degree of separation here in the UK. Bishops can still vote to not pass laws in or House of Lords but to be honest any real connection between the Queen, State and Church has long-since dissipated.

@DDS: They are still continuing sporadically. While the official acknowledgment of the troubles seemed to end with the Good Friday agreement religious killings have continued. Here is a list of religious killings in N. Ireland in a certain year, 2002. However saying that there is no way that they are killing each other currently at the rate that Muslims are killing each other all over the world.

But the fighting between Protestant and Catholics in NI isn't religious conflict, per se. It's much more a political conflict which uses religion as a thin veil. Protestants target Catholics, and vice versa, because of their polar oppinions on where the unity of Northern Ireland lies- with the Irish Republic of with Great Britain. Any religious strife is due predominantly to politics, rather than the other way around. In contrast, conflict between Sunni and Shia Islam is completely religiously motivated.

It's also worth pointing out that the peace process didn't officially kick in until 2004- just that since the Belfast Agreement there has been very little conflict.

Jackal.

I'm neither atheist nor have any other religion. I really don't mind any religion whatsoever whether it be Christianity, Islam, Buddhism whatever. I hate diehard fanatics though who try and push it down your throat or who are constantly going on about the subject, and I find a lot of atheists do that.

I've always gone by the mantra that religion is like a penis. It's absolutely fine that you have one and it's probably a big part of your identity, however please don't wave it around in public or try and ram it down anyone else's throat.
