Z-Axis for Restricted Areas

Recommended Posts

Thanks to PD Escobar’s map we know the boundary lines that trigger a Wanted Level, but the map is limited to the X and Y coordinates only.

On an unmodified game I was able to teleport to the very bottom of Area 69. I used the San Andreas Place Manager to teleport inside. The San Andreas Place Manager is an external application that allows teleportation without actually modifying the game. Once inside Area 69 (where the Jetpack spawn is located), no Wanted Level was triggered. I had to climb up the stairs a couple of flights in order to get the Wanted Level to actually trigger. From this I inferred that there’s a Z-Axis for Restricted Areas, and if I’m not mistaken, once high enough in the sky (or heavens) there’s a point where a Wanted Level won’t trigger for Restricted Areas either, but I’m not sure about that.

Does anyone know what the value for the Z-Axis is, and does it vary based on the map location?

Yeah there are Z limits, you don't have to terribly high above Area 69 to avoid triggering the wanted level (but the SAM's will shoot at you regardless)

If you can dig up the original thread where PD posted the map, then I think it was discussed.

It also seems that how you approach restricted areas matters.

As you already know, the 4* areas don't trigger while swimming. I've also found that I can get much closer to the Easter bay naval base if I drive or walk on the sea bottom (or use a submerged Vortex) compared to swimming.

From the looks of the map I'm guessing there are 3 cubes in Area 69 which each might have different Z coordinates for their corners. If we can find out the coords of the corners of each cube then we can find out exactly how high or low from sea level we will trigger the wanted level in each cube.

EDIT

Just tested and it looks like the Z coordinate for the top of Area 69 is about 70. I might get to the others if I have time. yawn.gif

This is interesting. I don't think I've ever seen this laid out on a map before.

I thought that if you crossed under any section of the bridges from San Fierro to the desert that it gave you four stars, or at least that's what happened to me. I may have been too close to the SF side.

It always struck me as strange how arbitrary the boundaries were; you could walk along certain edges of Flint County and have to go in a few steps to trigger the restricted area stars. Other places it happened if you got too close to shore. But knowing a bit now about how it's done, it makes sense from a programming standpoint because I figure editing it to make it conform perfectly to the landmass would take quite a bit of work.

The military zones are defined in CULL.IPL with flag 4096. The military zone coordinates are:

-1357.44, 503.578, -10.6598, 0, 18.9495, -10.6598, 115.205, 0, 140.26, 4096, 0

-1380.64, 421.429, -10.6598, 0, 63.1997, -10.6598, 161.207, 0, 140.26, 4096, 0

-1481.8, 308.229, -10.6598, 0, 50, -10.6598, 157.743, 0, 140.26, 4096, 0

190.734, 1870.47, -1.06643, 0, 73.3125, -1.06643, 95.4981, 0, 73.9336, 4096, 0

289.513, 2011.4, -1.06643, 0, 71.208, -1.06643, 102.159, 0, 73.9336, 4096, 0

333.553, 1861.82, -1.06643, 0, 79.8704, -1.06643, 58.2495, 0, 73.9336, 4096, 0

It looks like the 6th and 9th parameters define the lower and upper Z respectively. So

SF: -10.6598 to 140.26

LV: -1.06643 to 73.9336

The restricted area information is hard coded. If Seemann didn't post the limits then I don't know how to find them without testing in game.

Z limits for restricted areas appears to be from -100, the lowest level possible without teleporting back to the map, and 950, which IIRC, is the lowest level of a few of the interiors.

Missions vital to the restricted zones:

-The Green Sabre (even though completion disables wanted level popups in the Badlands & San Fierro, you'll only be able to buy safe houses in the Bandlands.)

-Are You Going To San Fierro (completion enables you to purchase safe houses in San Fierro.)

Yay Ka-Boom-Boom (completion disables wanted level popups in the Desert & Las Ventruas, though you'll only be able to buy safe houses in the Desert.)

-Learning To Fly (finally, you can purchase safe houses in Las Venturas.)

Area 69 & the navy ship can only be accessed without a wanted level during certain missions, or the obvious use of cheats.

but the SAM's will shoot at you regardless

I have flown over Area 69 with 4 stars and no stars (no * cheat), and the SAMs won't fire when I'm above a certain altitude. I need to be quite high, but I don't need to be near the maximum height.

Driving/walking on the bottom gets you closer to the naval base without triggering wanted levels? That surprises me, because in all other restricted places I get stars when I dive and touch the bottom.

What are those numbers? Are they feet, meters or something else? For comparison it would be useful to know what the maximum flying height is, if you happen to remember the number.

try hydra, you can go over the height limit with a glitch

What glitch is that? Edited by OG Viking

The 4* areas behave differently from the military areas.

You can't get below 4* areas, but they do allow swimming without touching.

Military areas don't allow swimming, but it might be possible to get below some of them.

As long as the Naval base is still in 4* area both rules apply.
