GTA IV asks for GFWL update...

Recommended Posts

I got GTA IV as a Christmas present and installed it.

When I installed it, it started up just fine, but when I log into GFWL, it asks for an update. It installs, restarts, I log in again, another update. It keeps repeating. I'm not installing any patches at all, because I've heard of the dread "Fatal Error: TEXP70" error coming up after Patch 7 from my cousin who also has the game.

I have tried reinstalling it, manually updating GFWL, uninstalling both, restarting then reinstalling both, reinstalling GFWL, reinstalling both without restart, and just restarting after install. Non of them work. I have also tried updating every single driver, uninstalling my AV, and even formatting and reinstalling the OS!

My specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Bit

6 GB DDR3 Memory

Intel Core i7 Extreme at 4 GHz

ATI Radeon HD6870

Motherboard is an Asus (I forgot the exact model)

and 1x2 TB SATA HDDs (I think this is irrelevant)

Like I said, I have tried everything that came to mind.

I have the same problem others have descibed. I've tried manually installing GFW as well with no luck. I'm able to login to GFW fine when outside the game, but when I'm in the game it doesn't work. It's as if some code needs to be updated in GTA to work with GFW.

Currently I've resorted to dropping the xlive.dll file in the root of my GTA folder which at least allows me to play the game offline. I'm still disappointed because I wanted to play multiplayer.

I did notice that Rockstar admits that GFW cannot be updated within the game - see: http://www.rockstargames.com/support/IV/PC/GFWLupdate/

"Grand Theft Auto IV requires that this update take place outside of the game as there is a known issue when updating Games for Windows - LIVE from within the game. The problem will be addressed in a future game patch. We apologize for any inconvenience."

I did find, sort of, a workaround. Before I'd use use the xlive.dll hack to get the game working but I also discovered that in the lengthy text before creating a profile, there's a 'link' within the text to create an 'offline profile'. This was good enough for me. I guess I'll wait until Rockstar/Microsoft fixes their lousy code so that I can play multiplayer.

Hi

Just hope Rock Star got paid a truck load of money by M$ to put their guff GFWL

s**t in my GTA IV Steam game (plus the other DRM crap). Lets face it no

PC owner/user would install it otherwise...

Spent about an hour getting GFWL updated this afternoon just to play GTA IV

with a "game save" option. What I waste of my time... die.gifrahkstar2.gif
