Game Based On Films...

Recommended Posts

I was wondering about games developers who get the licence to make a game based on a film. How does the contract work? Will another games company be able to aquire the rights to do it down the line? Or is it once one company does it it's done sort of thing?

What I'm getting at is The Godfather. Such a great film etc but unfortunately E.A. got the rights to do a game or two based on it and made a dogs bollocks out of it. I tried to play this game and it had things in it that I love in a game but it was executed in the game about as good and usefully as an inflatable dartboard.

Will another company get the chance to do a remake? Imagine if Rockstar did The Godfather, with Rockstars amazing attention to detail and accuracy and realism of things that of certain eras.

Also, The Scarface game was great but it's on an old platform. That would be good to play again. An remember they were going to make a game based on Taxi Driver? Man, I'd love to play that!

They say usually games based on films are crap. Well, that's usually true when some developers are rushed and have strict deadlines etc but Rockstar did the unusual thing of making a game based on a film thats about 30 years old and has more of a cult following than anything else. They had the time to do a good job it would seem. They really pulled off that game and it was magic. I wouldn't mind seeing one division of Rockstar wholly dedicating themselves to making game remakes of cult and any decent films worthy of it. Dead Man's Shoes?

As crazy as it sounds, a game based on Catch Me If You Can could be pretty original and a lot of fun.

Playing as a genius conman and figuring new ways to swindle money out of people and live the good life hasn't really been done before in a game.

Well that, or The Day of The Jackal. A game like Hitman but in a sandbox environment with only one target. Literally hundreds of ways you could go about the kill and plenty of forged documents to procure and disguises to assemble.

Killing a President or a King and planning the perfect getaway, the censors would have a field day.

It just depends on how it strays from the story. I for one loved the Scarface game and i'd be really pleased to have it redone, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I absolutely loved the Warriors game too. I'd say a Die Hard game would be a good one.

I think R* tip their hat to so many films in their games that they don't need to go down the film-to-game route. GTA is already influenced by many mafia movies, then there's RDR (westerns) LA noire/Max Payne 3 (film noir) and Agent (cold war thrillers). They don't really need a pertcular movie to sell a game when they have people who can make a great game from scratch.

A lot of people want to see them make a pirate game, and there's the pirates of the carribean franchise which Disney canned a couple of months ago. I bet they could make a great game out of that.

I haven't seen the second one you mention but it sounds like it could be a good game.

@Joseph: Good points and I love the influence of film in Rockstars titles but I'm talking that if you really wanted to play as say Tony Montana, it is Tony Montana not some influence, you know? Would be nice. Well, I'm talking more about The Godfather, I just hope another company can acquire the rights to do it and make it a beautiful game with lots of detail etc.

@Vercetti: Man, a Die Hard game with graphics and physics engines we have nowadays would be great. Set in one building and fighting your way up. 3rd person shooter with stealth too and little obstacles and puzzles to solve on the way up with lots of hand to hand combat.

Yeah, like set in a huge skyscraper and you have to fight your way to the top floor. Loving the sound of this.

I believe so. For example EA previously had the license to make James Bond games. But when the license ran out, EA chose not to renew it for some reason and so Activision stepped in and now they're making Bond games such as 'Blood Stone'.

Could Rockstar make a Godfather game? Sure. In fact I just did a Google search and apparently EA dropped the license to the Godfather name last year. So any games company could swoop in and buy it as long as Paramount Pictures are willing to sell.

It's fairly obvious that movie license games set to coincide with a film are usually poorly made. But games that have movie licenses which are either based on the film post release or are set at another time in that universe tend to fare better. To illustrate my point I'll use the Tron series. The film came out in the 80s, but it wasn't until 2003 that they got around to making a fully realised game based in the universe. The game was fairly creative, taking elements from the film and expanding them, and offering a variety of memorable levels.

Recently Tron Evolution released and having played through it I can honestly say it doesn't feel like it's recieved half as much work as Tron 2.0 did. It was obviously made to be out in time for the release of Tron Legacy and it shows. Level design is weak, gameplay is a collection of elelments from more succesful games, and the whole thing gets repetitive after only an hour or two. Considering it doesn't even follow the events of Legacy they ccould have easily given it more development time, but alas they chose to cash-in on the hype of the film and release it at a similar date.

Other franchises have proved similar results, the added time and flexibility of not having to tie-in with a movie greatly helps the result of the product.

WF the Hobgoblin

You guys are aware that there have been many Die Hard games over the years, right?

Anyway, despite the fact that there has been a lot of bad movie games over the years, I'd have to say that I unashamedly love games based on movies. In recent times there has been a number of really good ones.

Yeah man, I had Vendetta for the PS2 but I didn't complete it. I'd love to see a 3 person action/adventure/shooter with lots of badass 80's action music with lot guitar solo and dodgy sounding synths. Sneaking around in the dark, jumping elevator shafts, balancing on girders over holes in the ground, killing guys in funny 80's suits with sunglasses and bad haircuts.

Terminator 1 and 2 and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker were great on the Megadrive.

Interesting.

@:Linky: Aw man, I'd say that would just be something sweet. Free-roaming around a dark city be hunted down by cops doing various missions to track down Sarah Conor and eventually come to head with the Terminator in a 5 mission part huge finale fight out.

For the second you could have such variations of missions maybe in a free-roam L.A. and doing the big chase scene and hacking the ATMs for cash drving around on scrambler as a young John O'Connor and then actually doing missions as Arnie.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the utter brilliance that was Escape From Butcher Bay. Quite possibly the single best game to film adaptation I've ever experienced. It combined all elements of gameplay into an absolutely breathtaking experience. It went from simple prison life to a wonderfully implemented brawler then jumped ship and became a fantastic FPS game with unique and difficult combat implementing intensely creative stealth elements. Right as that ended it turned into a hasty survival horror where you were running from your life, then suddenly more stealth and crafty gunplay. All of these elements cleanly intertwined to create easily one of the best FPS games I've ever played.

I have yet to play Dark Athena, but once I manage to get a decent system it's one of the first games I'm going to get without a doubt. It's not underrated, but it's certainly greatly overlooked.

I remember playing True Lies on the SNES pretty frequently. I recall the game kicking all kinds of ass.

I dug the sh*t out of that top-down harrier level.

But wtf, no mention for Goldeneye?

if the movie is a standalone, so now part 2's, sequels, prequels and what not, then I could see it working. James Bond works because the films are all seperate, but if a movie is like an extended TV show, I couldnt see it working without the game being a spin off title with the same characters and elements, just different scenarios.
