The new LC is my favourite out of the two 3d renditions, the only thing that was lacking was the sense of danger found in the III era LC.

There is plenty danger in the new rendition, the only difference is the gangs are less noticable(realistic), if you go up to one of the gangs and start a fight or start shooting they will kill you easily.

I completely agree.

@sas: You have to provoke them though. It's like they couldn't care less. It feels as though you're the only active criminal in the city.

Some of the gangs that matter little to the storyline, fair enough, I could see why they wouldn't start at you, but the Russians? Who wouldn't want to make a name for themselves by having a crack at Niko Bellic??

I know if you provoke a gang in IV they will retaliate but that doesn't make the city feel dangerous. In III, as you progressed through the storyline, more and more of the gangs were after your blood. I loved how you could just be wandering through Chinatown and then suddenly find yourself being attacked by Triads despite not provoking them in anyway. IV doesn't have that, instead you have to provoke someone and even then its usually just a minor response.

I prefer the new lc as the graphics are more realistic and just really give you the feeling that you are in the bustling airy city of new York. The new lc's Alderny managed to grasp that cold bad reputation of Brooklyn whereas gta 3's one didn't just manage to nail that. The map is undoubtably larger which means more to do and explore. Much more to offer. It's not really clear which is better as if you look back all those years to the gta 3 era they did not have the technology which is used in the new lc. In contrary to this the old lc has that special feeling in it, its classic and will be more valuble in the future. Overal I dont know theyre both awesome! lol.gif

Liberty City in GTA 4 has the better environment. But Liberty City in GTA III was beyond gangster. You couldnt even walk your ass through some hoods. The funny thing is, I have more criminal memories from the old LC in GTA 3 and Liberty City Stories than the new LC. The new Liberty City feels like it's tourist orientated, while the old LC seemed to be geared to actual residents. I have really vivid memories of the old LC, like being jumped very badly by the Diablos right in front of Big Al's Liquor, being chased by Triads everytime I got off the train at Kurowski Station, trying to sneak on the Portland Station subway train without an enemy seeing me, having to watch my back whenever I went to the basketball court at Belleville Park, and being terrified of the Columbians everytime I had to step off the train at the Shoreside Terminal subway station.

The new LC doesnt have that atmosphere of your life being on the line. I used to have to put in alot of work in the old LC, and I can say from experience that I had to act much more gangster and tough in the old LC than in the new one. My whole mentality was different in the old LC. The whole environment of the city felt wild and dangerous.

I prefer the new Liberty City, but I must admit I do miss that sense of danger from the old one. The old Liberty City always felt like a dark, and gloomy sh*thole, and it was perfect in that regard. Everywhere you walked you were constantly on guard. While it did get a bit annoying just exploring this aspect really added to the atmosphere.

The new one looks amazing, and some of the neighbourhoods look rough (Bohan in particular), but there just seems to be a lack of "I shouldn't be here".

Anyway IMO the new one wins for cosmetics, but the old one wins for atmosphere, and danger.

I am glad to hear that people love the old LC because of the danger. I prefer the old LC for it is much more gritty and dangerous. You cannot go into certain hoods without having your ass shot off. It is indeed the worst city in America.

But the new LC is just too safe, more style than substance. You go to the so-called rough hoods and you don't have the feeling of people watching you. And Hove Beach, it is absolutely ridiculous. After what Niko has done with the Russian Bratva, the last thing you will be thinking is hang around that area. But I have been hanging around that area for a whole bloody day (in-game, and it is after I move to Bohan), and no one has so much lay a finger on me. Man, if is St. Marks in the old LC, you are a dead man walking.

So R*, please bring back the dangerous hoods in GTA V. The new LC is a pathetic excuse of a crime-ridden city.

I liked the new one better. It just looked better, although very dull in some spots. But I agree with the people saying that the old LC had a better atmosphere. I mean, the new LC was not dangerous at all. If you didn't provoke the gangs, they did nothing. In the old LC, VC, and SA, I was afraid to go through some neighborhoods for the sheer fact that I knew if I did, my balls might end up on the other side of the city. In IV, I had a better chance of drowning than I did of being killed in a gang attack.

And to be exact, the area that the mafia resided in was not the place to hang out in LC. So that train station was basically useless for me.

,I like both LCs. The first GTA game I played was III, so of course the old LC is what I was introduced to first. I agree with the other people who stated that the old LC is a helluva lot more dangerous. By the time you finish GTA III, ya got every gang in the city gunnin' for your ass! Same thing with GTA: LCS (except the Leone mafia but that's only because the main character belongs to that family). It has a very cold, heartless and even semi-depressing vibe to it, definitely the kind of place that is, as Little William put it, the worst place in America! Despite the almost cartoonish-style gameplay and comical occurrences between its characters and other citizens, you can tell it's a brutal fight for survival.

Now, if you want a more realistic, detailed and über-nostalgic feeling of being in a real city, then the new LC is the place to be. Being pretty much a carbon copy of New York City, it's a lot bigger and more spread out than the old LC, even utilizing toll booths when you travel between different boroughs! Although I'm not from NYC (I'm actually from Philadelphia, but Philly's basically a scaled-down version of NYC), playing GTA IV made me feel homesick as hell! (I live in Arizona now). The environments, from the dirty, grungy slums of Bohan (based on the Bronx) to the high-faluten, hoity-toity atmosphere of Algonquin (based on Manhatten), are very detailed and gives one a pretty good idea of life in the big city if they are not from there. The people go about their business of everyday life. I felt no real danger from any area of the city when I played GTA IV, even the gangs! The new LC, compared to the old one, is tame. As said before, it focuses more on realism, and the only reason it's screwed up in terms of extreme violence, corruption and general every-man-for-himself attitude is because it's GTA! That's the name of the game! Hell, I'd spend hours at a time causing mayhem just for the s***s and giggles because nothing really goes down unless you start it! Basically, the old LC is pure fiction, a deadly fantasy world where you constantly fight to stay alive. In GTA IV, you can rest easy knowing that you won't get your ass shot off every ten seconds in the new LC (if you like to avoid conflict)! Long post I know. My point, it just depends on the player and how you look at it. Realism vs fantasy.

I prefer the new LC over the old LC. Obviously we could all see that it has much better graphics and so on but its seems so much like real life New York its unreal. The dingy, grityness and just the overall feel of the new LC is amazing plus it is bigger than the old LC so there were more places to discover and explore the first time you played the game. Also even though this doesnt have to do with the city itself i think the characters in the new LC appelead to me more which created a better vibe for me when i was playing the game.

I agree totally, of course the new city is bigger and better looking, but it does not have the same feel and the lighting is not very good at all.

I prefer the old III-Era Liberty. It had a real sense of danger and a proper atmosphere. The style LC I dislike. I don't even think it looks particularly good. The old LC was much more fun place to be.

+1 I agree completely. I much preffered III's story, characters and music too.

It must have been so annoying that you couldn't go exploring old Liberty cause you'd be fighting gangs. Glad thats gone.

Attacks only happen occassionly so it isn't too annoying.

Like hell it does! Try going to St. Mark's after you kill Salvatore and see how many seconds you last.
