Senate votes to end military ban on gays

Recommended Posts

Problems arise, like they have in recent years when you start to give people special treatment for being different. In recent years the problem has been gender, ethnicity and religion. The British Army to keep with current social climates, is desperate to appear more modern, so every time a promotion board sits(imagine that in your job to get promoted, you have to compete yearly with thousands for 30 places) loads of decent lads are overlooked so that they can promote more women and ethic minorities. The amount of useless squaddies promoted, seemingly because they ticked a few social acceptance boxes has become ludicrous. It is difficult to justify this to a guy on his third tour of Afghanistan with a family to support, when a girl who is always on the sick and can't go on tour is promoted ahead of him and becomes his boss.

This is where resentment and discrimination comes in, and by having a special rule, you are dropping somebody right into the middle of it because they are gay. Now they are one of the lads, new rule and everything that happens to them will be scrutinised, if they get promoted, people will question they didn't get it on merit.

Sad, but unfortunately true.

An unfortunate but true set of circumstances. Positive discrimination is still discrimination as far as I'm concerned. All promotions, whether in the military or otherwise- especially in the military, if I'm honest- should be based solely on performance. I'm a great supporter of blind interviewing.

However, permitting openly gay members of the armed forces to serve without the fear of repercussions isn't giving them special treatment, it's giving them equal treatment.

But from what I can see there is no new special rule here? Just the removal of a special rule?

haven't been following this story/thread really, but have seen it around alot on the news and such.

Saw this on google news earlier and made me kinda chuckle and thought I'd throw it over here

Gates said DADT is still in effect, despite Obama's passing of the law.

How does this make people feel? Does it make people realize that America isn't all that great.. I mean even if we get a law to pass, if someone doesn't like it they can still enforce it. Just look at the Cali cannabis laws they passed, yet the feds can still go in there and do whatever they want despite state laws.

Did you actually read the article? My guess is a big, resounding 'no.'

Just because the repeal passed doesn't mean it instantly goes into effect, which is the entire jist of what it's getting across. But I suppose, as per usual, you're just looking for an excuse to shamelessly jab at the American government in the most sensationalist manner possible.

I just find it funny how big of a deal they're making out of this. passed once, then repealed, now going again and theyre telling people not to come out for atleast 60 days..

Its like, since when did sexual orientation matter one bit? Like just cause someones gay doesn't mean they aren't capable of performing a task.. I think these people have stereotypes drilled into their brain.

And they say they wont make special bathrooms or housing for gays except in special occasions. hahaha what wrong with these people? If they hate gay people so much, why wouldn't they wanna send them into a pointless war to get themselves killed?

I'm not really on either side of the argument cause I find it so pointless in the beginning. Like they're making a huge deal outta nothing..

Dude, do not even speak anymore. You obviously do not understand the fundamental principals for why power was constructed the way it is in the U.S.A, let alone how it's been dicked around with for the past 100 years and giving mindless chuckleheads like you blank ammunition for reasons that the Constitution or the State/Fed system should be done away with.

We get it, you do not like the policy and you see that segregation of gays and straights might take place. Quite frankly, the sexual orientation of anyone in the military should not even matter. I fear the military hierarchy will present itself as the biggest problem when knowing who is gay and who is not. I bet once we get to day sixty, we're DEFINITELY going to get a news story about how some straight Lieutenant sent an openly gay Corporal in to a home with the risk of dying, and some bleeding hearts will come out and call that discrimination because the officer knew the man/woman was gay.

From Dog_day:

Besides, the military is as much about discression and intelligent decision-making as it is about direct combat and all the bravado it brings. In order to be a successful member, you need to be able to balance both. A team of young, trigger-happy, gung-ho soldiers is f*ck all use in most modern miltiary scenarios- you need real professionals, which some thing, that, from my experience, many sectors of the military lack.

I do not understand why gays get banned for mentioning they are gay to a fellow soldier, but openly flaming behavior in the same way like getting drunk during P.T or openly cursing out an Officer should never be tolerated. All three of those examples I just mentioned should be reprimanded. That's not being professional and not at all what the job of infantry or engineer or any of it calls for.

haha what? I think you got confused. I dont see anywhere where I said the constitution should be done away with.. I wouldn't have a problem with the state/fed system if they would do it correctly, unless I have something misunderstood.

California's medical marijuana law is a perfect example. The people of CA decided to pass the law, yet for some reason cannabis puts a stick sideways in the feds butts so even though the laws passed, they still go in there and bust the dispensaries, despite what the people actually want.. its ridiculous. Maybe I just don't understand why they can do this but I still see it as messed up. If anything it'll increase the amount of money CA makes, it could replace timber and tons of Rx pharmaceuticals, clothes and even plastic, also reduce the money being spent on a pointless war on drugs and putting harmless people into jail and prison. So why can the fed still go in there and go against laws that Californians made? Is anything by the people, for the people anymore? Or is it all ran by the government, whether you like it or not?

The whole ordeal with DADT is just stupid. There shouldn't even be an argument over gay people being able to serve, what does sexual orientation have todo with persons ability to perform tasks?

Like I said before I haven't been following this story a whole lot so I can't say I know everything going on with it, but eh, its just my own .02

Bad idea. I hope the republicans repeal it. You cant give special treatment in the military. If thats how it is maybe men and women should sleep in the same barracks. Itll be a distraction.

How is repealing it special treatment? The way the system currently exists, it's the military who ARE being given special treatment.

As I've said dozens of times on this thread already, there's no evidence from all the other dozens of countries who have already permitted openly homosexual people to serve that it has any negative impact on morale or combat ability- so I'm inclined to believe that anyone who uses that as an excuse is merely trying to hide their personal prejudices.

Unfortunately, due to the large number of counterfeit copies of these in circulation, and the state of the forum economy, we can no longer accept them as legal tender. wink.gif
