Senate votes to end military ban on gays

Recommended Posts

This is how the problem is caused:

Officer: Private! Shoot that man!

Gay Soldier: I can't. He's adorable.

Yeah right. Chances are that man that the officer ordered them to shoot is firing at them.

As for this, One of the only times our government has done something right recently, party be damned. If you want to defend your country, it should not matter who you prefer in the bedroom, if you are capable of doing it, you should be allowed in. Just my two cents.

Gays worked pretty well for the spartan army, and many other ancient civilizations.

Heck, as long as there's someone out there willing to fight, let him fight.

At least in America, military service isn't usually compulsory.

In Brazil, when you hit 18 you have to attend the selection process. They usually pick the ones that don't want to serve, and send away those that really do want to serve.

Very true, the Greeks were without question gay as hell. It's surprising how much cultural conditioning affects the way we look at things like homosexuality. Everyone assumes the state of homosexuality and interpretation of it was the same throughout history, even if you are tolerant of it. Instead we have societies that had tremendous proportions of the population being bisexual at the very least. Being manly, tough or respectable had more to do with being a "top" than being straight, or at least being of a higher social class than your partner.

This has been way overdue, it's one of those issues that even more so than legalization of marijuana, has such weak opposition that it's amazing this hasn't happened already. The other side doesn't have a point, it's hilarious watching them try and come up with one. They can't up and say "fags are weak and shouldn't serve in the army" because a) it isn't true and b) is really openly homophobic. Therefore they resort to retarded sh*t like saying the whole issue is a distraction that will get troops killed, utter nonsense.

@Stefche:

Is it possible that they'll try? Yes.

Is it probable that they'll succeed? No.

Even if a bill to reinstate it cleared the House it would still have to get through the Senate and then the President... or come back around and pass Congress with 2/3rds in approval. I expect it to take a bit of time for everything to be in place for them to try it with any hope of success... By then gays will have been serving openly for long enough and we will see there is no problem with it.

Did it work?

Did what work? I'd have to understand what you were trying to do to know if it "worked" or not. I don't.

See that right there is another negative stereotype. Okay, let me be clear I'm not a homosexual, but I do believe they deserve the same rights as you and I. I mean yeah sure they're gay, does that mean they aren't still people?

Yep, good thing. Finally getting out of the stone ages.

I have a feeling their is going to be a de facto Don't ask Don't tell rule anyways.....of course that can be seen as good. Because, why care? They can shoot, we can shoot, that's all that matters in this militaristic world.

Damn does the close mindedness of some of the folks in here make me chuckle. I don't think even half of you realize how many homosexual, male and female alike, are in the military at this moment.

For those of you who lack a substantial sense of humor, that was a joke sigh.gif. I have nothing against gay people. And I think they should be treated equally. I may feel uncomfortable around them. But that does not make me regard them as a "lesser being".

^This.

The so called "ban on gays" is really no such thing. I mean don't ask don't tell is a stupid policy IMO, but it's as effective at "banning gays" as gun laws have been at banning guns. Such as in an area like DC where handguns aren't allowed, but people still get killed by them quite a bit.

There are an absolute sh*tton of people in all the branches of the military that are tougher, braver, scarier, and do more to protect and defend their countries than any of the internet tough guys in this thread. The problem isn't allowing them to be in the military, the problem is allowing them to continue to be in the military without having to hide who or what they are for fear of being sh*tcanned.

I'm sure there's a 90 pound gay man in a tutu somewhere that would not make a great soldier, but that has nothing to do with him being gay, or wearing a tutu. There's no shortage of heterosexual men that couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag, or be capable of anything other than pissing themselves if they were fired on. By the same token there are some gay men, lesbian women, and women in general that could do all of that. I don't think anyone is saying every gay man on the planet could or should be a soldier, anymore than anyone is saying every straight man on the planet could/should be one. I think what people are saying is that if someone wants to protect/defend their country, or even just join the military to get a decent education that they couldn't get otherwise, they should have the right to like any other citizen.

Also, it's one thing to be a small-minded, homophobic, bigot baptiste, but to be completely unable to grasp a simple point even when it's made quite clear repeatedly. You obviously have a successful career in politics ahead of you.

(edit)

And now that I think about it (and on a less serious note), having your whole army get beat by a bunch of guys in pink tutus would probably be pretty demoralizing. Sounds like some pretty powerful psychological warfare to me.

I couldn't care less, baptiste.

Racial and religious integration was more or less pioneered on the battlefield when it meant squat what color anyone's skin was, or who or what they worship or don't worship. Now that we've arrived in the 21st century, it's time to further advance as a civilization.

I didnt say the contrary. But as far as killing, I'd just rather have a hetero. I dont know why, perhaps its the possible stereotype of being "softer" when your gay or something.

Sounds really homophobic dont it?

I remember there was an Australian representative in rugby who because of the stereotype decided to be a brutal motherf*cker on the field. Some of the fist fights he was in were unbelievable. He could have my back (hurr hurr) anytime.

To add, the whole distraction argument is really stupid. When you are being fired upon by an enemy, the least of your worries should be the sexual orientation of the guy next to you. Just saying. I think you can rest easlily assured when there are bullets flying over your heads, your platoon partner ain't checking out how your ass looks in your camo.

Now women need to be allowed into combat units, and not just stay in the rear with the gear.

Doesn't even Israel utilize women in combat units? I'm pretty sure Russia has since WWII at the very least. We really need to get with the times.

Thank f*ck for this, we really need to get over this religious conservatism bullsh*t and this is certainly a massive step in the right direction.

Israel has odd conscription rules though. Every able-bodied person over 18 needs to do military service (can't remember how many years though) whether they are male or female.

If I remember rightly, they were also the first nation to openly permit homosexuals to serve.

Is it a total fallacy that gays are generally less "tough" for lack of a better word than heterosexuals?

Yes. Sexuality and personality are two completely seperate issues. As others have said.

Ridiculous, the situation was far better before with "don't ask, don't say". This is just more knee jerk liberalism which can only cause more disruption and resentment far outweighing any beneficial effect.

What next I wonder ? A camp salute, a pink walking out dress and a John Inman parade march maybe?

See, its this kind of close minded, idiotic, bullsh*t that makes me hate the people of my generation. You, my friend, are the salt to the snail that is our progressing society. I hope you, your bullsh*t theories on how you think the real world works, and your close minded ideas of how different people should stereotypically act find a short pier to take a long walk off of.

As a veteran and a heterosexual male I can honestly say I could give a rats ass if you are gay or straight. When the sh*t hits the fan on the battlefield, all that matters is your ability to hold your own and watch your buddy's back. Its a matter of being able to do that which determines your right to be a soldier, not what your sexuality happens to be. We live in a country where every member of the military has volunteered to do a service knowing what they are getting themselves into and the sacrifice they are making. I would be doing a disservice to my country and lowering my own moral fortitude by denying any man or woman the right to serve. Its jackasses like you who think every gay male is a effeminate, lisping, dandy boy attempting to give every guy in reaching distance a reacharound while in the shower and every gay woman is some c*nt diving female lumberjack/body builder with more mass than the average male. Kindly f*ck off and make sure to chop off your testicles...the last thing you need is to be procreating and possibly spreading your ignorant views of society, sexuality, and morality to another generation.

@Dog_day_sunrise, fair enough, I'm not arguing, I asked a question.

@Sauron., same as above, I simply didnt know. Thanks.

@sweets, There is SO MUCH wrong with what you just said,

Point 1:

Also, it's one thing to be a small-minded, homophobic, bigot baptiste,

Not homophobic or anything

I can feel the hostility, It wasnt my intention to seem ignorant.

I made it extremly clear that I didnt know if it was or wasnt a fallacy.

Yes, I am ignorant about the gay community and gay people in general. I have not met, or had the opportunity to meet gay people and thus dont know much of anything about them. I never said the contrary, and it looks like you are ready to hang me for it, which is quite frankly abit ridiculous.

I pretty much asked a question, with no aggresivity, homophobia, or anything of the sort.

I may have some misconceptions, but you'd be wrong in thinking they cant be changed, the reason for those misconceptions are my ignorance to the subject at hand.

The inability of some people to simply read.

Point 2:

but to be completely unable to grasp a simple point even when it's made quite clear repeatedly.

You are obviously having a time issue. The only person who responded between my original question and my last post in the thread was Makeshyft. To which I made no comment what-so-ever on the actual topic. I simply mentionned his formulating was less than desirable. I also explicitly said that despite the formulation of the post that I understood what he said. Meaning that I got that gays could be as "tough" as hetero's. Meaning that again, before going into a mas rant you should perhaps read the relevant posts.

And as for the "quite clear repeatedly", all the "sensefull" answers came after (Sauron, Tchuck, Dog Day sunrise), I read them, and believed them. So no, the point was not made excessibly clear to me in the first hand, and at no point what-so-ever after the point had been made did I refute it or disbelieve it. So how could you say that I fail to grasp the simple point?

You just make no sense what-so-ever dude.

I don't know how I missed this, must've been out of the loop for the past few days. Anyway, been following this on/off since Obama's campaign brought it to my attention. Great news. People shouldn't have to lie to themselves or others just because of what they enjoy shagging. It's a good way of reminding the world that while the US gets a lot of bad press, it's still quite a progressive nation.

I'm also pretty happy with the reaction here, not as many ignorants as I anticipated. Guess I don't give GTAF enough credit sometimes.

guys I think he was saying its better not to draw attention to the guys sexuality in the first place as it suggests the sexuality of a soldier defines his performance in the army. It doesn't f*cking matter if he's gay or not. It should never have mattered in the first place.

You're missing the point: the fact that the ones whose minds are still backward-enough to even consider sexuality as a determinant in someone's ability to fight during a military battle are generally the minds of those who consider having a bit of fun in the shed with Aunt Jane as an afternoon hobby.

Exactly, so tell me what the point of "Don't ask don't tell" was if not to suppress their freedom of sexual orientation?
