Need support graphics help

Hey folks, I need help because I suck at graphics.

 

I'm going to spare everyone the pointless back story and just try and get to the meat.

 

It looks like the next GTAF community arcade game is going to be Frogger. All of the game graphics are using the sprite sheet from the original arcade version, but in order for this game to look good it needs support graphics. Support graphics are pretty important. Even if the game plays great, it is the support graphics that make the game look cool IMO.

 

Basically, the game needs some sort of overlay with a transparent center for the actual gameplay.

Here is a pic of the GTAF SPaceInvaders game as an example.

Frogger is going to need something similar in order to look good.

As you can see - it doesn't look too fancy just sitting there in a standard window. It needs some fancy dressing of some sort.

 

It doesn't have to be an arcade cabinet like Space Invaders, it can be anything, but regardless of what approach is taken I need help since I DO suck at graphics.

 

Would anyone here like to work with me on the supporting graphics? Naturally, you will be credited within the game.

I've done a bunch of frogger games in my time. One of my first posts here at GTAF was a frogger based game that I did as a joke - claiming it to be GTAIV-PC when we were all wondering about the PC release.

 

I thought I had other screens left, but all I could find was an early WIP shot.

Anyway...I'm taking great care with this version. I have a tendency to skimp when I do frogger, but I'm making sure not to skimp on any of the extras this time.

Thought I should contribute to this in some way. I was looking for an old arcade frogger logo but couldn't find any good one, so I made this for anyone who wants to use it.

Also if you guys want some ideas take a look at this, It's based on the arcade cabinet.

Rojo, cool. Great marquee too.

 

I was actually thinking about nice fat side areas. I was thinking it might not be bad to use a side area to display a larger list of high scores, and other fun dynamic stuff.

 

Someone PM'd me to ask the dimensions. Currently, the game play area is 518x591, but I am willing to scale it if needed.

I had a few minutes this morning before I have to get ready for my first holiday event of the season, so I played around with Unrated's overlay since it didn't require me to scale anything. Scaling can be a pain in the ass.

I should have mentioned that I'm not going for any look. I'm banking on people here to run with the art direction. I'm just the programmer person.

 

 

 

I'm pretty much finished. Was not sure what type of look you were after. Classic or modern?

If all the overlays are the same size with the same size play area, we could let the player decide which skin to use.

Using Unrated's as a template; size = 1000x888 and the top left corner of the play area is at 244x236. Play area dimensions = 518x591.

 

I wish I didn't have such a busy weekend. It would be nice to get more of the game code out of the way. I should be able to knock out some more code tonight if I don't get too drunk at my xmas festivity.

With any luck there will be some time to work on this today. It will be easy to add a nice little interface to let players switch between skins.

 

I guess the game play code needs to be finished too tounge.gif . Just the water elements are needed. Easy enough.

Well, I will destroy you on this one Trip, Frogger is my game. I think the border to the game should have a retro look, but that's just the feeling frogger gives me.

There is still time to contribute if you want to try again.

 

My work day is bleeding into my home time for a few more days, so I don't have the slivers of time I need to wrote any fun code. I can't think there will be a huge delay - just a few days at most.

Looking forward to this trip, when do you expect to finish all the coding and stuff? you know approximately.

Hard to say. I may have a good day tomorrow and than I will just need the evening to breath. I really hope to have all the code done this weekend. Believe it or not I have nothing to do over the xmas weekend smile.gif - just me and the little lady quietly in the house like any other normal quiet weekend.

 

@Unoriginal, we'll see...people may be able to smoke me in recent games like tetris, but when it comes to the real classics I may have an edge tounge.gif

I'm double posting and bumping this topic for something of a blog like update.

 

I let the holiday fun and whatnot distract me from finishing. Today I am forcing myself to get more gamecode done. I hate doing the f*cking turtle logic and code, but it must be done. It is the only bitchy part of doing a frogger clone. Once the turtles are done the game will almost be ready.

 

Still time to contribute to the skins library if anyone wants to.

Unrated, Thanks for the help with another overlay.

 

I finally got back to knocking out more code.

I just noticed a serious problem. There are only suppose to be 5 lanes in both areas. I have 6. f*ck!!! All sorts of rescaling hell now...arghhh angry.gif
