I download about 95% of my music Either from Itunes, or bigpond music, or i download it from illegal sources.

I have for a while now (a few weeks) been comparing the same songs i downloaded illegally with legally, i notice no difference except for bass, I usually listen to music with my Sennheiser headphones, so what is the point of paying for music if i can get almost equal quality from illegal free music? Yes sometimes you can't find the sing you want, but aside from those circumstances.

Has anyone else ever compared the same song illegal/legal?

Is it to do with what my computer can put out? (since i have a relatively cheap computer just for net browsing) if this is the case would someone tell me if they have had great results with legal music as opposed to illegal on a kick ass stereo?

Err, I have a feeling the feds will be watching this thread haha.

I use soulseek so I suppose that is legal. I vote legal.

Feds pfft, they think they are so tough with a huge database of information, monitoring equipment and bad ass weapons, they can suck my hairy balls!

Maybe because it's supporting the artist? Some people enjoy having something to hold and display, or physically sift through their records.

I admit, I've downloaded quite a lot of music but whenever I have the money, I'll buy a CD.

If I like an artist, I'll buy their album. If I just like a particular song then I'll either get it from iTunes or I'll download it from an illegal source. I like to support the artists but with my wide-ranging taste in music I'd be in so much debt if I didn't reach for my youtube downloader every now and again.

But that's assuming every artist with material out that gets pirated could afford a Rolls. That doesn't make much sense. Being a career musician can be pretty tough when you're not a huge hit on MTV.

I stopped buying CDs back in late '08. Since then, I discovered Mininova (before it changed). I downloaded games from there at first, then I saw some music too. When it changed, I went to thepiratebay.

I'm thinking of buying some CDs to play in my car, probably T.I.'s new album would be the first one I'll get.

I never bought music, but I would if I could. It's pretty hard to get the stuff I like and I don't have a lot of money. I actually planned on buying an album by 4mat but I have to make a f*cking bank account that I can use online and it's not very useful and profitable to make one.

I'm not going to lie, I got my vast music library off TPB.

sh*t, I'd never have guessed catspider.gif

Most of my music comes from Demonoid, though I'd kill for a Waffles.FM invite as there has been a bunch of stuff I haven't been able to find on Demonoid or TPB due to obscurity. I absolutely love supporting independent artists and labels (most of the music I listen to being indie in one way or another), but frankly I don't have the money to do such a thing and I have a deep, inherent love of music so it's either not buy any music at all or torrent sh*tloads and feel bad later while listening to the aforementioned awesome music.

This might be against the rules, but Demonoid and TPB have nothing on Rutracker. You just need to register an account for free if it's still possible. There's tons of music in lossless formats and a lot of music that is not found on other sites.

Hey guys, just a reminder. Discussing actual ways of less than legally acquiring things doesn't fly here. I'll say it once.

I love buying CDs still, there is something about that I love. Depends on the artist too, if it is an artist I really love... then I will buy the album. For songs that I want, I normally but them off itunes (79p or 99p is not that bad). I also still have vinyl, some of the stuff I have on vinyl is not on CD yet... so I use audacity.

you should have to only pay for concerts is my opinion. especially with todays music most of it takes no effort to make...

if they are real musicians i have no problem paying but if they are just singers or rappers i dont think they deserve for me to pay for singles and cds

Only time I buy records/cd's is when I'm at a show and I can physically hand the band and/or merch dude/lady my money. So I know that they get every penny for it, instead of going through some middle man where everyone takes a slice of the cheese before giving to the band themselves.

Oh crap, I accidentally voted on Mostly Illegally. I meant to say Mostly Legally.

iTunes is where i buy my songs. If I can't find the song I want there, then I go to torrent.

I like mostly the same music as my dad so when he gets a good CD I copy it to my computer and copy that to my mp3 player then give him the CD for the car, so I vote 'most legally' but it's actually all legally.

That's not illegal. It's not even illegal to give a CD to your friends and have them rip the songs from the CD as far as I know. If it is illegal then it's a bullsh*t law.

It is not illegal for you to make a limited number of copies. US law allows this under what is called the 'fair use' doctrine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

In general, small numbers of copies that are made for educational, non-profit or archival purposes (e.g. you copy your Lady Gaga CD for a friend so he can see if he likes it) are OK.

If your copying efforts will materially harm the copyright holder (e.g. You copy a million Lady Gaga CDs and leave them in public for anyone to take), then the laws will sanction you.

I get most of my music through a YouTube to .mp3 conversion site. I only do that for individual songs, though; I always buy CDs from music stores.
