They will use an updated version of the RAGE engine, it can take more than we saw.

Euphoria and Ragdoll physics as well?

Mostlikely, one of the best engine physics on gaming, they have no reasons to invest in a new engine, since this one can

be pushed way over the limit.

I don't think they'll change engine, and this whole topic (changing engine or not) is as stupid as always. But.. There's more to the engine then the physics.

Rage is great, but it still come up short in many ways. All the crazy bugs, framerate issues and sometimes entire streets not poping up when going too fast. Things could be better...

Yea, Optimization it's one of the main problems, hope the new gta will have it fixed.

My gut feeling tells me that R* is going to be using the RAGE engine for a long time. Of course they'll often make improvements on it to keep it up to date. Eventually after many years R* will come out with a better engine but for now RAGE is one of the most advanced/sophisticated gaming engines out there.

It's really good they space these out so I don't pull a stunt like playing six hours straight overnight like I did when I first picked up San Andreas. I paid for it when I went to work a few hours later. Guess what I did after I got home? It wasn't sleep.

I can't do that sh*t every year.

True. But waiting 4 years between GTA's? Thats just torture.

Go find a Duke Nukem fan forum and tell them four years is a long time to wait for a game.

Doesn't negate the fact that 4 years is still a long damn time.

4 years for a GTA game? Doubt it.. R* and Take2 will probably announce it as soon L.A Noire and maybe Max payne 3 is realesed. They need a GTA year from what ive heard..

Everyone seems convinced GTA Next needs to be announced. It doesn't. I don't even think they're in alpha and why should they be? R* are one of the best devs out trying new things and making good profit out of it too. Give them a break and some respect.

North seems to be focused on Agent, which is going to be really special.

You people really underestimate how long it takes to even model and skin a full large city in high resolution. It took a year for each DLC and they barely had any new modeling. RAGE is an awesome engine, but it takes longer to make stuff for than it did for Renderware. Thus, there is no comparing the time between III-era games and the new games.

Today's games are MUCH more complex. In Duke Nukem 3D all the characters were sprites. Today they are polygonal models, have to be skinned, and then animated or motion captured. A very  long, tedious and complex process. Also games today are "deeper" and require more than key/door stuff. That means more time to develop. Note all the so-so [first-person shooter] games that didn't sell well in the last two years and you will see that they were simple compared to more complex efforts like Half-Life. A game like Duke Nukem Forever is probably 5-10 times more complex than Duke Nukem 3D was.

If we can all just follow this philosophy, we can all hope to one day become game developers who never release a damn thing because instead of accepting the fact that we're taking too long, we use sorry ass excuses like "Complex games take time". My man Dr. Dre seems to have this concept down pat.

I can understand wanting to put in a lot of effort so we don't get little COD clones every year, and I can understand wanting a good release time, and I can even understand wanting to delay a release to test further for bugs and such. But when do developers reach a point where enough is enough?

i`m completely fine with r* taking their time with gta v as long as they provide the players with pc

versions of rdr and their upcoming titles.

Now, there is a counter to this rule. Technology is developing faster too. The ability to make the models is becoming more streamlined at the same time. There will be a point where development time peaks and games start coming out faster and better because the technology will allow it.

Rockstar can take their time with V, I'll be waiting patiently. I'm just happy GTA isn't an EA title, they would rape the sh*t out of the series

Oh boy EA would totally ruin GTA, like they ruined so many other games/companies, i don't know why they even bother making games if they are not going to do them properly.

(they did good with battlefield though)

Any game once a year is too much for me, there are so many games available, and you only need a few really good quality games per year, i would rather 1 Great GTA every 4-5 years, than 4-5 crap rehash's of the same game with a new skin.

Many ask how f*cking long does it take to make a game, well that depends, for a game as large as GTA a long time (i am not stating numbers like some foolishly do since i am not a games developer and have not got a firm grasp on what it takes to make a game).

Since Rockstar is not just a one game company anymore (Rockstar North specifically) they might have 1/4 of their staff working on each game.

Now, there is a counter to this rule. Technology is developing faster too. The ability to make the models is becoming more streamlined at the same time. There will be a point where development time peaks and games start coming out faster and better because the technology will allow it.

there is a counter to your counter, even though technology is advancing games are becoming more and more detailed/bigger, so it might still take the same time to make lets say vice city or san andreas with old technology, as it does to make a new game with new technology, but if you were to make SA or Vice city with new technology but developing the same game with same graphics ect, they would definitely be faster to develop.

So basically what i am saying is that they can make new better games at similar speeds to how fast they could make old games.

Doesn't negate the fact that 4 years is still a long damn time.

4 years is a while, but not a long damn time, i think GTA every 2.5 years would be perfect for me, enough time to play some other games in between, and have a little bit of a life, then go back inside and play PlayStation for a few weeks/months

2004 for the PS2, 2005 for XBox and PC.

It was nearly three years between SA and IV.

It's funny how the development time of a whole new next-gen engine was actually less than what we are waiting now. Remember though that IV was delayed by 6 months; bringing the gap to 3 1/2 years. Still less than what we will wait now if release happens 2012. I predict either April like IV or October like the III trilogy.

The engine was already in development when SA came out. They had it ready for Table Tennis' release on May 23rd, 2006, a full 2 years before GTA IV came out.

Edit: They started developing the engine in August 2004 when EA bought out Renderware's owner Criterion. San Andreas came out in October 2004.

But is it possible to start developing an engine without having the dev kits of the targeted consoles? how were they able to know the potential of the current-gen?

The PS3 started retailing in 2006. The dev kits, therefore, were available quite a bit before that.

I imagine the RAGE engine has been in development since GTA III. By the time SA came out it was probably almost done and they were just tweaking it a bit.

No, they started working on it just before SA came out, like I said. They needed the new engine because of the sale of Renderware to EA. Before that, they were content continuing to use the contemporary Renderware versions until they stopped being updated.

R* still hasn't finished RAGE. The version they used in 2006 for Table Tennis was still an early version, as you can see from the version used for RDRedemtion, maybe even going so far as to say Table Tennis was just a tech demo for the beta version of the engine. This explains how the engine and game were both made in just the 2 years. Table Tennis could have been the in house engine development proof of concepts that they just polished up and released as a game.

In my opinion, RAGE just keeps getting better. I mean look at the difference between GTA and RDR. Imagine how good V will be with a more improved engine.
