BarbraStreisand
Hi! I'm pretty much new here, so forgive me for not having checked if a similar topic exists. Anyway, to the point: I like, very much I might add, to play GTA IV on my new HP Envy 17 laptop. I'm running on i7 720QM (It's a Quad Core, but GTA doesn't use it. What it does use, and I have a gadget that proves it, is the Turbo Boost, making it clock at 2.8GHz, 1.6GHz being the sandard.), 6GB DDR3, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 5850 with 1GB DDR5 and allegedly being able to use even more system RAM when needed. My settings in GTA IV are: Resolution: 1600x900 (60Hz), Texture quality: MED, Reflection resolution: MED, Water quality: MED, Shadow quality: MED, Night shadows: OFF (I'm running Patch 1.0.7.0!), Anisotropic (x2) texture filtering, View distance, Detail distance and Vehicle density: all at 25, Definition: OFF and VSync: ON. First of all, this is only showing 337/1004MB resource usage. Now, I ran the benchmark: The strange thing is, it again only shows 32% CPU Usage, 43% System memory usage and 42% Video memory usage. And the benchmark also shows an admirable 42 average FPS. And yet.. It doesn't feel.. Smooth. What I am looking for are any and all ideas on how to make my GTA IV run faster, or should I say, smoother on my system. Whether its mods, tweaks, updating drivers, anything, any idea that will have any chance of showing promising results is increadibly welcome. I am grateful for any help in advance and hope that my noobishness doesn't bother any of you. Barbra Streisand (Yea, right! )

Barbra Streisand (Yea, right! ) well your first line says it, you didnt look.... and instead of typing everything else you shouldve looked and searched the forums. tired of seeing the same 3 subjects over and over, a little search would reveal hundreds of the exact same topic. IronHide-AW
After seeing so many over so long it appears to me some of these people probably do wind up reading similar posts, but because they don't find the absolute exact equipment match in a thread to their own they hold out hope maybe their rig is special and it'll just magically run better.- If anyone that is ( a ) nuts and ( b ) has way to much time, maybe they could create a single thread of "It Will Run Like sh*t" thread and just dump configuration after configuration in it. Then can just close these threads with a single response pointing at it.
BarbraStreisand
First of all, thank you for your wonderful answers. I mean, how much do you not have a life, if you bother to take your time and write utter bullsh*t. Anyway, after I discovered what a sh*thead one can become from hanging around this forum too much, I sought to quickly find a solution in one of the other topics: what stood out as possible fixes for my problems were rolling back to 1.0.3.0 and doing what this guy did: This guy's solution (so enabling the whatever and making a commandline.txt like his!), since we have kinda similar rigs. I have done the two things, but I have only recieved a very very modest increase in performance, or actually, since I before had Texture quality at MED and I like it at HIGH, I turned it to HIGH and I get the exact same fps rate as before, 42. Everything else I left the same (the Filtering quality is at MED and Shadow density is at 5, since these two settings are different from the ones in 1.0.7.0!). While playing I never really get a noticably long drop in fps, what I do get are these little stutters or momentary freezes, especially when turning around, driving the car really fast or participating in a particularly juicy police chase, which all, I guess, makes sense, but, I still think the game should take more advantage of the maschine, and the maschine should get more out of the game. The before mentioned guy with the similar computer seems to have an enjoyable result, why can't I? So, has anyone got another suggestion? What really bothers me is that the benchmark still doesn't show full or even near full resource usage, when there clearly are enough! I don't understand it, so some REAL help will be very much appreciated! B S
TheTomster
Try to turn your settings higher. It might sound very weird, but the only real thing that affects FPS is view distance and shadow density it seems. I have shadow density on zero, with shadows on high, and I run ENB series... I get around 40 FPS, but this is with a bit of a stronger GPU than yours. Your computer should run the game with very high settings at around 45 FPS, so I don't know what the problem could be. Try what I mentioned though, the idea is, while a bit caveman like, to push the GPU and the CPU by upping the graphics intensity, and it would kick them into gear. Honestly, does it help going on a rant about one guy who asks a question, even though he was a bit rude and didn't do research first? I guarantee you, you're wasting your time, because come tomorrow there will most likely be another 5 topics like this one. My opinion? Just don't get involved with these threads, if you don't want to help, don't proclaim it. He wasn't asking you specifically for help, so let's leave it at that. Haha, you really are priceless. You took some more time to spew even more complete bullcrap. I never ever expected any help from a petty little loser such as yourself, I kindly asked other kind people to offer ideas about how I might go about fixing my game's issues. What a complete f*cking dungface do you have to be, to, TWICE, have the need to say something that is nowhere near supporting, on a support forum? Have you heard the expression "If you have nothing intelligent to say, say nothing at all?" Would you care to apply some to yourself? No, you wouldn't. Because you probably know you're a total f*ckup and that your life cannot go anywhere but down so your frustration ensures you're such a dick to everyone, even the ones that DO NOT WANT YOU OPINION. So, I guess, curl up and die, you dumb f*ck. And just to get two things clear: 1. I've had GTA IV for about two yoear now, I got it two weeks after it went for sale. I have been playing it on my desktop ever since, but now I was trying to get it working properly on my laptop. So much about being behind time. And 2. Barbra Streisand, besides being an abismal actor, is the name of a very recent popular dance song. Because, there's this thing, you know.. It's called socializing.. Try doing some and you will probably have heard it in no time. Anyway, I've wasted enough of my life's precious seconds on a lowlife primeape, so, yeah.. Die. For TheTomster: Thank you very much for your suggestion. It's like you say: doesn't make much sense at first glance but makes so much more when you think about it. I just have a question that goes hand in hand with your offered sollution: Shadow density. I only roughly understand the idea, so, if you can spare some more time, could you quickly tell me what it does and how does it affect a newb like me. I mean, how much is there a visual difference between 10 and 1? Anyway, I'll leave my settings be and play around with Shadow density and View distance some more and try your sollution out on the first occasion my work schedule gives me some time to f*ck about. Thanks again!
viometrix
you didnt ask anyone specifically, anyone in the forums can answer. ive always told people there is no such thing as a stupid question, you have proven me wrong. oh and by the way noob, i am one of the foremost hardware experts on these forums. thank god you didnt deal with me a yr ago, i wouldve really got you going. regardless i am not going to waste any more time having a flame war with you, this topic is a pointless repeat of many other topics.
