nerner
Indeed it is that time of year when the air gets cold and people rush around buying pointless sh*t but if there is one thing which I am puzzled by it is the public's appetite for Christmas songs, be they the classic carols sung by choir boys or the contemporary sounds of East 17 and Bing Crosby. No other holiday period has this many songs dedicated to it, if it has any at all that is. You don't see the Beach Boys singing about the joys of Easter, or Band Aid asking if African orphans know that it is currently Ramadan. Religious holidays are generally surrounded by great joy, except for maybe Lent; Easter was when Jesus rose from the dead, Yom Kippur is God reaching out to people of a Jewish persuasion, etc. Yet Christmas is the only one which sees this joy manifest itself through the medium of song. Why is this exactly? As for the actual purpose of this topic, it was merely to enquire as to what Christmas songs GTAF will be listening to this year. Are you a classics fan? Do you like contemporary takes on old songs? Are you a novelty Xmas no. 1 fan? Or are you a musical grinch who steadfastly refuses to even put the radio on at Christmas time for fear that your ears will be assaulted from multiple angles by tone-deaf X factor contestants, and songs which are overplayed for about a month and then left in the attic for another year? As an aside, I was reading this charming little article where an American radio station seemed to have decided the 100 greatest Christmas songs. It did strike me as a little bit odd that none of the British classics seemed to be in there. Aside from Band Aid's collective guilt trip and a few other songs from people famous on both sides of the pond like Bowie, Elton John and John Lennon I couldn't see a Christmas song which I recognised. Why do our two countries have such a gulf between us in terms of Christmas songs? Does the Atlantic Ocean signify such a complete divide with regards to Christmas and its musical accompaniments that only a few select artists and groups can break through? So that you get where I'm coming from, take a look here. Out of those 10 great Chrimbo anthems, only 4 are on both lists. 40% overlapping between two musical giants just isn't on in my opinion. Also, what is your favourite Christmas song? Mine is East 17, Stay another day as it reflects the moment in my life of the greatest importance so far, my birth. SilentSeas
Christmas is the only time of the year that I can tolerate the music played on the radio because most Christmas songs are better than sh*t that is produced nowadays. My favourite Xmas song has to be Shakin' Stevens 1985 effort because it symbolizes the UK Christmas experience (apart from the snow that is). 3minty3
I hate christmas music with a passion. I mean it's the same 7 or so songs played over and over and after so many years I've ended up hating all the songs.

trip
I know all I've ever listened to with my family over the years is THIS christmas album. Is that the one with "I'll be home with bells on"? f*ckin' hate that song and it is played a few times over at my family gathering. I'm not a big fan of xmas or xmas music, but my little lady is. It's freaking xmas music every weekend all weekend long since thanksgiving. At least it is just the classics. Edit: I clicked the link. Yup - it's the same album my family abuses us with. Holy crap, I can sing all of those f*cking songs off the top of my head. I wish I hadn't clicked the link and looked at the track list. nerner
Not meant to be a Christmas song, but is generally mistaken for one and that's good enough for me. Is that themed after the first world war or the second? I always figured it to be the First but the Churchill references confused me somewhat this morning. Tyler
Another debauchery-drenched tale by Hollywood Undead! I mean, it's the most original thing I could remember after seeing the other songs. But it's not exactly safe to blare on your stereo if you give the faintest sh*t about decency, or if you prefer not to seem like a total douche. Still, it's catchy. Christmas music is always laden with nostalgia and awkward feelings for family moments and such.

nerner
Anyone else think that the Band Aid song lyrics make no sense? Of course there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time, because it's their summer! Collective guilt trips have never come so stupid as that one. The Guru
Agreed. And it's not like the snow would do any good for most countries there...
