Hey finn, just remember we "bonkers" folks have developed and still are developing some of the most sophisticated technological achievements known to Man. Meanwhile, we come to these things still using our imperial system.

Actually, you don't. Most people in the technology biz in the US use the metric system. It's far more practical, because you also rely on foreign companies and scientists to help with combining the products, studies or whatever.

I won't deny the U.S.'s importance on the modern world stage, but simply assuming that these individuals who drive yours (and ours) technological push use the Imperial system seems rather ignorant.

Just saying, nobody is "bonkers" either way. Just two ways of measuring things, and if they both work, then that's cool by me.

Don't worry, i don't think you guys are stupid or anything, i was kidding when i said you guys are bonkers.

Although it was pretty funny on chasers war on everything when they were convincing Americans on the street, that the Eiffel tower was in Australia and the were like "wow i definitely have to visit Australia" hahaha. (i think some if it might have been staged no-ones that stupid)

I'm in the UK, we use miles. Kilometres are way too big of a number. "Dude, I was doing 110!" when that's only 70mph.

After watching Motorway Patrol, I see New Zealanders refer to the speeds as "60 K's" or similar. Sounds ridiculous.

Also, mods exempt from referring to the question and answers topic? Lol.

CJZera' date='Dec 4 2010, 05:11'] Degrees Kelvin ftw?

Only if you want to know the absolute temperature, like physicists.

At least finding Kelvin from Celsius is easy. Just add 273.15 to the temperature in Celsius and you've got Kelvin!

But it's not so easy to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. sad.gif

Faranheit is ridiculous! I don't understand on what it was based on. 32 is the freezing point... 0 is supposed to be what?

Celcius is simple, it is based on

0 = freezing point

100 = boiling point

I measure distance in my penis lengths.

So you're saying my foot-long chili dog here is 5 chris-wangs long?

Stop going to Sonic.

Dude, I had me a coney dog today. I damn near deep throated that thick wiener.

But seriously, who gives a f*ck what measurement system America uses?

Which number better reflects the way a hot day feels, 100, or 37? 37, that's a pretty damn random number if you ask me. catspider.gif

OdDsOcK, ignorant? Never!!

why do some country's drive on the left side off the road?

Because there's cars driving the opposite way on the right.

In all honesty though, the Imperial system won't die in America for a long time as most Americans are stubborn mules. I keep trying to acclimate myself to metric but I can never really pull it off (especially considering the fact that I have no intent to stay here), whenever I see a temperature in Celsius or a height in meters it all just seems underwhelming and hard to actually visualize the appropriate response to the measurements.

Well...

You do realise that engineers use the metric system? NASA didn't build any of their shuttles using inches and pounds.

If I remember correctly they once built an orbiter using both systems.

...And then promptly crashed it into Mars because the systems got mixed up.

Indeed. I was correct:

I like the metric system and I think that the U.S. should have actually changed to use it, but it's really hard to get away from Imperial in American society. Even in the engineering world where you see the U.S. using a lot of metric, the people that are actually involved that kind of industry were probably trained in Imperial and just get by day to day with conversions.

I remember when I was studying to be a machinist and we did a couple of blue printed parts that were metric. It was weird to see so many dimensions we would have expressed as ".0xx" inches in just whole milimeters. Then when you would say. ".025mm" you'd think ".025 in" and then be surprised at how small you were actually looking at.

Thats because the imperials went mad with power, destroying the jedi order (metric), and then the imperials crashed and burned. The Jedi's were dead before the crash.

What is this? is there no easier way to do it, no not really.

If you want to convert *Temperatures* from Celsius © to Fahrenheit (F):

1) First take the number of degrees on the Celsius scale and multiply it by 9.

2) Next divide that number by 5,

3) Finally add 32.

That's not that difficult, though. Unless you've got melons in your brain and are God-awful at maths, it's pretty simple to do. /elitist

Honestly though, I don't care, although metric makes more sense, and I'm used to it.

You know just because you're self aware of just how much of a dickhole you're coming across as doesn't make it any less affronting.

I do love how this argument always turns into Europe vs America, and the fact that Svip turned up so fast.

Hell, us Brits use both on a daily basis and we've not had (another) civil war (yet).

Who really cares?

What always puzzles me about Britain is how we merge the two. Short lengths in mm/cm/m. Longer lengths in miles and furlongs. Temperature in Celsius yet our own height in feet and inches or metres depending on our mood. We order beer in pints yet we fill up our cars in litres while the car guides give us stats in miles per gallon. Our weights are generally measured in kilo's however we use both tons and tonnes for the same measurement despite the fact that they mean wildly different weights to anyone who needs to order anything.

At school we get taught both still, which leads to great mindf*ckery, especially in conversations with our parents.

I use both systems. After years of having to convert F to C and inches/feet/miles ot millimeters/meters/kilometers here, during my time in the military, and working for foreign owned companies, it has become fairly second nature. Its not that knowing both is elitism (as stefche stated and Jay hated), its just a matter of understanding what everyone is going on about when you are speaking to folks from other countries than your own.

Besides, when working in different environments that encompass people from different parts of the world, having them speak English is nice to have. The least I could do is be polite learn some of their systems of measurement so we can have a simple conversation without being lost in translation/conversion.

BTW: Whats all the bitching about anyway? Its not like UK, the source of the Imperial System, is that far from a point in history where we shared the same system of measurement.

I prefer miles it's a lot easier giving out directions "Yeah sure take one mile down turn left at light". Kilometers would just take too long and I don't have all day. Specially, when you're at a red light for crying out loud.

8 Mile converted into KM.

Friend: "Hey let's go watch 12.8 I hear it's badass."

Me: What is it about... an earthquake?

This makes no sense. The actual physical distance doesn't change because of what you measure it in.

If something is 2km away, surely it'd be much quicker to say "Go 2k then turn left" than "Go 1.3 miles then turn left"? You can round km just like you can round miles.

No Canadians in this topic so far?

Because they have to deal with the most BS when it comes to units. All hail "473 ml" cans!

this whatsthat.gif

As tripmills stated i think the only reasons we still use the imperial system are economicals.

Isn't metric better in every way?

ewww bit harsh actually on my part

Harsh in terms of what I said?

Nah. I wasn't actually hating on the mixing of imperial and metric, I was hating on the perceived easiness of the maths involved in converting the two.
