actually, CTW was set in 2009, GTA4 was in 2008, so there goes that theory.

Yes, you will see that I did note that.

"Later games are set in the past relitive to release date"

CtW came out in March 2009 originally, and was set in late January 2009 as seen by the Chinese New Years celebration in the game.

Also, CtW is kind of unique in that it was a contemporary handheld version. When GTA1 and 2 were ported to GB/C, they were already no longer contemporary, and GTA Advance was set in the past relative to its release date. But as a handheld, it is free to differ from the standard applied by the main games.

oh, well, I guess you got me there.

But they can't go back to Liberty again can they? I guess in the intro it would be OK.

Nope they cant go back to LC again becuse in the EFLC manual it says <Liberty City is over Next stop>.

Exactly, I'm thinking it would end up being like GTA2 where they show 2011/2012 LC in the intro, then go to the actual destination. Of course, that's assuming the next game is GTA V.

Frankly, this could mean nothing. We all assume it's a clue, but that may just be meant to take at face value. It is a parody of a real poster after all.

I think it would be cool to see an 80s Vice City done on with the GTA IV engine. Would be so badass and bring back many memories. inlove.gif. But then again I would like something modern like 2010 and later even more. Brb while I go into my safehouse in GTA V and get on the 360 to play multiplayer.

I would never like to see GTA go too far back in time. I love both GTA and Mafia although I think M2 isn't as great as it could/should of been. I think Mafia has the older period set and done quite well, I know R* could easily do a great job of an older style city, but I think GTA works better in more modern times, with newer technology being available, faster cars, more weapons.

Mafia has tried to be more realistic than GTA, but thats partly because the time period kind of demands that imo.

I wouldn't want to see it go back in time any further than SA or VC did. The whole style of GTA and its humor would also suffer imo if you went too far back in time because people just weren't like they are in GTA. GTA works well with all the excesses of modern life.

I chose Modern-Day as the period I want it to be set in, mainly as I would like it to be a sort of an indirect sequel to IV. I would like it to be its own story in its own right yet offer little hints and clues to the aftermath of what happened in IV, perhaps with the odd familiar character popping up somewhere or dialogue that explains stuff. I know the story itself is finished and what-not and that is meant to be the end of it...I'd just like to know hehe.

Personally, I am still in the ever-decreasing camp of people who don't think it will be called 'GTAV' or 'GTA 5', rather GTA IV:Something. I am hoping RockStar are going to establish another multi-game Universe just like what they did with the III-era.

Technically, from both a developer's standpoint, and my personal one, IV's era already has 4 games in it.

Well, I don't see why we can't do 70s. That would truly rocked, and its not that much further back than 80s.

Modern Day. The 80s and 90s are already done and I don't give a f*ck about any period before that because it is ancient history. R*, don't f*ck it up and do some 70s GTA and you will lose a customer like me.

Rockstar could do with out a customer like you.

70's or 80's could be great. Afterall setting GTA in a non-modern era is like getting one big f*ck off bonus feature in itself. You get to experience and whole time era that you otherwise wouldn't be able to do in real life (obviously).

It helps create an atmosphere I think. Like driving around early 90's Los Santos listening to Ice-Cube on the radio with your homies to cruising around 80's Vice City listening to She's On Fire. It really helps create something special.

Driving around listening to LCD Soundsystem is cool and all but sure I do that in real life anyway so thats one thing that GTA IV was not offering me.

If its set in modern day nothing really current in the game has legendary/classic status because not enough time has passed for it to do so.

So, where in Vice City pastel suites were the happening thing, you see that it's typical of classical of the time in a way and you can laugh/admire it but say like in GTA IV you see normal suites and it's just. Wow sigh.gif How normal. Where have I see that before? dozingoff.gif

You see where I'm coming from? If they do set it in a modern day setting they should have the old and new versions of cars to make it more amusings and realistic.

That's a very good point about decades of the past being a massive feature in and of themselves. Plus, it definitely offers something very special to the game.

But I don't see why R* necessarily need to create this legendary/classic status that you speak of. For me, GTA alone is legendary enough! whether it's in the stone age or today's modern era.

Even if the next GTA is in Vice City 2012 (or whatever its release year may be) that is still something special, though. I live in Atlanta and a metropolitan landlocked city is "nothing special" for me...but a place like Vice City, or San Andreas, or pretty much any place other than Atlanta is offering something unique. The pastel facades of the hotels are still there. The breathtaking sunsets are still there. The heavy hispanic influence is still there. Ok, radio stations will be different, but nothing is preventing r* from including a "classic rock" station or something like that.

Anyways, if you can't tell already, I'm all for a modern day setting smile.gif I enjoy the inclusion of gadgets like handy cell phones and laptops. Despite their limited usage in IV, I've no doubt R* could make them become integral features of a game in a modern setting and really boost their functionality. Even more, I love 2010 BMWs far more than ones from 20-30 years ago. I'd love for my apt to have a large flat screen TV to watch a new episode of Republican Space Rangers opposed to an old box tele with bunny-ear antennae. Stuff like this is charming for me.

CB Radio was the cellphone of the 70s. It would be mandatory in a GTA set in that era.

Agreed.

I think the idea about it being set just after the Vietnam war, with the hippies dieing out like the west in RDR would be a great angle to work for the 70's.

Personaly I think the 70's are likely though, I mean it hasen't been done yet, and it has potential.

I voted 1900-1929.

I'd love to see the protagonist running around in a bowler hat, sharp suit and polished black boots, mowing people down with a Chicago Typewriter! Would be fantastic.

I love the old 20's gangster lifestyle, and it would make for a very interesting storyline. And you could also maybe have a blonde girlfriend who works as a dancer at the local bar / speakeasy, go round town in a boxcar... I for one would love it!

I hate the idea of going into the future. Too many issue, plus I feel it is more fun if they do change the time period, to recreate a period from the past rather than guess how the future will look. I enjoyed playing the last few games in present time, because I'm not from the U.S.A, so it is still as if I'm discovering something new anyway.

xgtamontariox

I feel the 70's as they've never really focused on that time period and it would be incredibly interesting to look back and see how everything had changed. I also love that era, I would ask for another 80's or 90's SA and VC have already slotted that time period biggrin.gif

The_Mario_Man

It will probably be within the 2000's. If not, I can't see it going any earlier than the 1980's. I'm sure Rockstar will come up with a bunch of other games to cover different time periods (Like Red Dead Redemption, Agent, and LA Noire)

Thinking about the Distant future (or past if you wanna look at it that way) if Rockstar developed a Star Wars game (or something along those lines), it would kick ass...

I think there's more or less a pretty simple solution to the answere, now we deffinatly don't want Rockstar going back before the 70's (60's is pushing it) because that's when you start to feel that your playing a game in a history lesson, it all depends though on the setting.

Som i would say R* managed to pick the setting and time dates excelently so far , so why make remakes of what rockstar have already made perfect all over again? So No to vice city 80's, already done and it was amazing

What about an 80's philly, theres a new location with a very good setting of what was going on at the time, or maybe 70's San Fierro where the South-east and far eastern syndacites were at it's highest and also the Gay pride stands and Hippie era.

That could be good.

I'd lke to see the gritty, poverty ridden side of the 80s not shown in Vice City. Philly had big problems with gang crime with the crack epidemic and it was generally pretty grim.
