70s New Orleans could work, maybe I'll do a topic about it.

I also think 60s London or San Fierro.

Are you still doing that 60's London topic? I can see the reasoning behind having a London game in the 60's but I think the setting would take some convincing.

I would love the 70's too, especially in America. Don't know nothing of New Orleans in that period though.

I'm nearly done, but I'm going to wait until your topic dies down a bit because I could be accused of plagiarising.

The reason I'd set New Orleans is the 70s is because black culture was a very big thing then and New Orleans is a big center of black culture.

Plus the gangs would be more interesting than now as it's mostly street gangs.

Whose gonna accuse you of plagiarising? Personally I think it would be great to have your idea up too, because then three different era's, the sixties, eighties and modern day, would be present on these boards all with reasons why to set a game in that time. This topic is good 'an all but its just a poll... the era's aren't in action.

Seventies New Orleans does sound good though, or Detroit.

It really depends on Location, for example i woudn't want lsd vegas right now as it's hardley run by the mob anymore, but when it really was was in the 70's/80's and i'm currently working on a Montreal based topic modern day...it's got more crime than you would expect.

I'd rather include a Canada based mix up of Toronto, Montreal and maybe Vancouver than jsut one city.

1980-1999 was the best in my opinion

The music

The cars

The clothes

The characters

The atmosphere (feel)

Just look at Vice City and San Andreas they are just as epic as a GTA can be! IV on the other hand wasnt near as good.

If GTA had to be in the 70's, it should be in LC and feature some good ole Black Power themes. G4TD seemed to have the right idea. Detroit or NOLA would be good too. Another good one could be 80's LC during the crack epidemic or 90's LC during........ 90's LC. But not late 90's though, maybe early or mid 90's (probably unlikely).

However, I'd prefer to stay during the current times.

The late '60s to late '70s. Definitely the most interesting era of the late 20th century.

Of the late 20th century? I would rather call it the mid 20th century.

Well, I suppose it's in between the mid and late period. I like to think the mid '70s offset the late 20th century, since it makes up the last quarter of the century (or if you consider a century divided into three sections [early, mid, and late], the last third). Since my choice spanned two decades (almost), I wasn't really sure what to dub it as.

I would like to see 1999-2005, or 2009-2015.

To be honest, I don't care, I just want the games to go in chronological order this time, unlike the III era... I mean, 2001, 1986, 1992? Makes no sense.

If there was going to be a 3 part pack of GTA V, I'd go:

1991 - 2001 - 2011

Ten year increments. And do a story very closely tied to each other, perhaps even the same character, with a "to be continued..." at the end of the first two games and "the end" on the last?

well, they didn't know they were going to do VC and SA when the did III, they just figured they'd pick off from there. Then they discovered the 80s and figured that would be a fun time. Plus, Chronological order is boring, having it mixed up makes for interesting stories, seeing why these people did these things rather it get explained.

Say, If Mr X killed Mr Y in 2000, then there could be a preqel in 1980 or whatever to see why Mr X did that.

True, but they already did that. So why do it again? I think it should be in chronological order this time, but that's just me. It's even more boring when it's just like IV and the DLCs. Is this seriously the whole IV era? Everything is just set in 2008... what's up with that? I mean sure, cross-overs are fun, playing as the other side, other characters, but it's a bit more boring than chronological order.

And personally, I think chronological order would create more suspense, especially when the player is left with a cliffhanger at the end of the game each time. wink.gif That's just me though!

Well, good point. Of course, it could have time travel in the game, and you could go to multiple eras!

That would be pretty sick, though not very realistic. But imagine:

"Man I shouldn't have killed that guy 11 years ago..."

*time machine back to 1988*

-Ends up sparing the guy-

*back to 1999*

"The dude ended up being my brother in law?"

It'd lead to unexpected plot twists. And though not realistic by any means, I like time machines lol.

And also, one thing I believe is cool about the present (during the present), is that we can relate to the characters. IV has a lot of references to the economic downfall of 2007/2008 (the period of time it is set in). Imagine people firing this game up 20 years from now when economic times are good, no one can relate anymore.

Time Travel + GTA = Win

Imagine it, if you don't like to play in the 80s, you can travel forward into modern times. Then go to the 70s. Missions can be in one era at a time, or it takes you all places!

I guess the realistic version of that is playing as different members of a family who all look similar. Maybe...

Or perhaps base the game around the main character's whole life. Starting with petty crimes as a teenager, moving up to more serious ones as a young adult, and then turning into a raging psychopath killer of some sort. And it would take you through corresponding years from his childhood to his death days. (So I'd guess like 1960s teen would start the game, 2020's/2030's death would end the game?) That removes freemode in the main thing, but then freemode could just be like a quickplay option, and could be in any era.

lol, playing as an old decrepit man in his 80s

Still make it free-roam(its GTA! come on!) but in the era he is in, say, Jimmy (main) is in the 70s, the freeroam is in the 70s, but when he passes the mission that unlocks the 80s, the freeroam is 80s. If you want 70s, reload a previous save!

GTA Eras have always been first game set in Present day NYC, (Yes, even GTA2, the intro video was clearly contemporary NYC.) followed by games set in the past of that particular universe.

GTA1 (1997, Starts in LC) -> London (1969/1961)

GTA2 (1999 or 2013 or 2099, intro video in set in 1999 LC)

GTA3 (2001 LC) -> Vice City (1986) -> San Andreas (1992) -> Advance (2000) -> LCS (1998) -> VCS (1984)

GTA4 (2008 LC) -> Episodes (2008) -> Chinatown Wars (2009)

So what we can see here is 3 things:

  • Every era starts in contemporary Liberty City
  • Later games are set in the past relitive to release date
  • The first GTA for any system is always in Liberty City (Not relevant, but true.)

I don't see the GTA V era being any different in this regard.
