50s = Los Santos

This was a time when the youth of the world realised they could break free from the stoic, uptight image set by their parents. Rock and roll and TV helped this movement along and gave birth to the modern age as we know it.

In Los Santos the Mafia would be at the height of their power, holding major sway in Hollywood. While territorial street gangs battled it out for control of their neighbourhoods with knives and bats. Key words:

Drive in theatres

Greasers

Milkshakes

Cars

Rock and roll

TV

60s = London or San Fierro

A time of social uprising, sexual liberation, music and drugs. This was a time when the patriotic sentiment left behind by WW2 was being challenged by anti-war/anti-government prompted by the Vietnam War. These feelings were spread through music and the intake of psychedelic drugs.

In London the underworld was ruled by "Gentlemen gangsters" like the Krays and the Richardsons.

In San Fierro the underworld would be ruled by shadowy Triad groups and Mafia families. Key words:

Acid

Weed

Rock

Psychedelia

Hippies

Bikers

70s = Liberty City or Las Venturas

A time when the modern age was really kicking in. The hippie movement of the 60s was waning towards the end of the Vietnam War and being replaced by the anarchistic Punk movement. Heroin was coming in a big way and it was up to the African American organised crime suits, who modelled themselves on the Italian Mafia,to bring it in from South East Asia.

In Las Venturas the Mafias from Chicago and Liberty City would be moving in on the profitble casino business and bringing waves of violence into the city as rival, out of town syndicates vied for control. Key words:

Black power

Black organised crime

FBI

Heroin

Disco

Afros

Any time before 2000, or after 2015 can go die  die.gif

Too many guys in here just getting carried away with all these nostalgic ideas for past eras. Sometimes people just don't think when coming up with ideas.

@ Mr Vice City

Vice City has already brilliantly captured the atmosphere, feeling and spirit of the 1980s. The 1980s has been done already, why cant some of you guys just see this ? I just cannot see how this can be done again without having to make another 1980s-based Vice City game, and there would really be no point in Rockstar doing that. I certainly cannot see Rockstar going back to Liberty City again just to do a 1980s-based GTA, and I'm also sure that we will not see a 1980s-based San Andreas, the best era for SA was clearly the 1990s, and that has been done already too. Vice City was the perfect setting for a 1980s GTA and it has already has been done (done very well), so there really is no need to go back to the 1980s again. It just don't make sense to me.

@ brownbear

Nice, interesting ideas with vivid descriptions, but as for them being viable ? - I personally just don't think so.

I'll say it again, modern-day time as in from now, when the actual game is made. Any time before and too far in the future is pointless. Modern-day times makes the most sense. I think me and Piperka are on a similar page here, except that my recommended time frame is 2009 - 2014.

If only Italy and Russia spoke english, But nooo!! they had to evolve and speak russian and italian...

I might create a thread involving modern day Italy or a might make a concept based in moscow in the 1990's. They are such good areas for those time era's but they would obviously just be a concept.

Im not really for a modern day settin again, seems like if they did it would be more of the same. One thing I always liked about Gta was that they jumped from one time period to another and showed you a few characters from the other games and either showed you how they got where they were when u first met them, or in reverse.

I feel if they did modern day again it would just feel like IV again. I love IV alot but i love VC not just for the story but just because you get immersed in the idea of bein in the 80's. U feel like yur gonna be able to do some blow with a cuban immigrant and then shoot up assholes at a Flock of Seagulls concert lol.

I also dug alot of the idea's VC started but never got the chance to flesh out, sure TBOGT had clubs with some sh*t side missions but in the 80's America revolved around goin to the clubs, I feel if they do VC again thats somethin they could really work up and make a great feature out of.

All in all, if its modern day I think a big piece of GTA would die out which is seein some of yur favorite characters in different rolls than what you saw them in previously. But thats just MHO.

80's definately, sure the 80s has been done before but to have it done in this gen graphics would be amazing. I was born in 1990 but obsessed with 80s fashion and music I just love that era, the 70s not so much. Any time period before the 1960's is a big no no how boring would GTA be set with those crappy 20s/30s/40s cars? Its also been done before by Mafia 2 and that game was nothing special. Kinda boring actually.

Ask anyone with a brain on these forums and they will tell you that rockstar couldn't manage this straight away since the next gen hardware had never been used by their company before, add to the fact that it wouldn't fit Nikos image pimpin cars and parachuting out of buildings, if you could imagine a serbian war vet doing that, then my friend you are certifiably insane. The idea for SA was to make CJ somewhat like you IV however was about you being Niko get it?

Cool down, i really do wish some of the features from SA were in IV, i understand why they weren't there, my point was that i don't think rock star cares if they have to drop some features to make an 80's or 70's or even 50's game work.

I would like to see GTA set in the '70 during Vietnam War or just after it, when USA just got first severe kick in the butt, when some people started to look for freedom by doing drugs and driving into the sunset, when Hippies were dying just like wild west was shown dying in RDR. I would like the game to have athmosphere like Vanishing Point or Easy Rider with elements from Gone in 60 seconds and Cannonball!. Big cars with big gas guzzling engines, disco and rock music and drugs, a lot of drugs. The perfect setting for that game could be either San Andreas, especially San Fierro or somewhere in the midwest.

Agreed. 1970's San Fiero would be superb. More cultural references would be Bullit (admittedly '60's movie but includes one of the all time greatest car chases), Dirty Harry, Convoy, Smokey and the Bandit, The French Connection, Taxi Driver and loads more, I'm sure.

The tech would be different. Car phones, pay phones, CB radio. I know that supporters of a modern era GTA would not like to lose the cell phone innovation introduced in GTA:IV. But I'm sure careful and inventive designing of the GTA user interface would avoid that being a step backwards in gameplay.

are you kidding me? I think a GTA in space with a spaceman called Zip967 as the protagonist and he has to transport uranium to Mars would be awesome...

I joke, but I think the 70s could be wicked. Play as a black dude with a afro would be awesome

I don't want the f*cking 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s nor do I want the f*cking future. I have no interest in GTA: Star Wars. Just keep it at the present time (2010-2014).

I 100 % agree on this

If i want modern day, I can go outside, or play GTA4. I want something different!

If you want anything before the the 19th century, I can't really help you. Actually, I can in some small way - check out Assassin's Creed 1,2 and 3.

If you want the 19th century and early 20th century, play Red Dead Redemption/Revolver or GUN.

If you want the 1920s - I cant help you there, but Mafia 1 comes close enough to that era.

If you want the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, just pick up Mafia 1 and 2 and play those games.

If you want the 1960s, go and play the Godfather game.

If you want the 1970s, go and play one of those Driver games (I've not played them myself, but I know they are set in the 1970s).

If you want the 1980s, then just simply go and play the old Vice City games all over again.

If you want the 1990s again, just go and play San Andreas again (and if you don't like playing as CJ because he's black or for whatever reason, then thats your tough luck - then again there is Liberty City Stories which is also set in the late 1990s and has a an Italian-American protagonist).

If you want modern-day - Wait, hold on, you dont want that, even though it means if its not set in Liberty City, but and that fact that its an entirely different place that has NOT been done before in GTA during modern-day times (eg. Vice City).

If you want the future, then play the Mass Effect games.

He could also play LCS or GTA 3 considering it is pretty close to the 90's.

Yeah thanks Lightning, I forgot about that ! I'll edit my post now

while Driver is an awesome game, it didn't really do the 70s really well. It kid of sucked on that aspect. I bet GTA could do it better.

Only Driver: Parallel Lines was in the 70s, and it was only part anyway as it took place in 2006 aswell.

The 70s has me interested the most simply because no game has ever really taken on the period in full before, and I think R* would do an incredible job of it.

Yes alot of modern technology would be lost, but it would hardly be game breaking IMO. R* done excellent with the communication side of RDR. No reason they can't do it with a GTA set before modern technology.

Instead of cell phones there could be pay phones used for contacts, or the pager method used in GTA III, and VCS. Maybe there could be more in person interaction since contacts wouldn't be able to call you on a cell phone.

I don't think it would be that bad. Not as if the 70s was all that long ago. Hardly the Middle Ages.

Mainland Marauder

Modern day, which would probably be 2012 or shortly after. No telling what the world will be like then, and it's amazing since it's not that far off. Now what would be interesting is a DLC that brings the entire setting back to, say, 30-40 years ago with changes in the built environment over that time.

I've long wanted to see something out of the late '60s-early '70s. The post-civil rights movement fallout, Vietnam, hippies, drugs, sex, rock and roll, muscle cars. Best of all, when the old folks get all worked up about this next awful video game that will corrupt Western society, we can just point out to them this was the era they created. tounge.gif

... or the pager method used in GTA III, and VCS. ...

There were no wide area pager services in the '70s. What pagers there were were only local area systems covering individual sites such as hospitals.

Alternatives for comms are payphones (as you said), car phones and CB radio. smile.gif

I think that the 70's (whether early or late) has the most potential, lots of movies to inspire the game, great music, cars, culture etc. I'd say the 80's but it's been done quite well in GTA all ready.

And about communication in the 70's, CB radio’s would be the f*ckin bomb, imagine running from the cops, the protag get’s on the CB, and calls a friend for help

Protag: Whisky Dick, this is Raging Zebra, over

Friend: 10-4 good buddy, over

Protag: I need a diversion, over

Friend: 10-4 sending in a some help

It’d be awesome.

It's a tough choice. Alot of decades has been done. And let's face it, what year it is doesn't really matter... What decade it is does.

We've done the 80's and the 90's. We even did 00's twice... (In the major titles, that is)

I would go with either the 70s, the early 2000, or in a near future.

Here's a bunch of reasons for each time area:

70s - Never been done in a major GTA title. Disco, Afro, Hippie culture, The Cold War, end of the Vietnam war, alot of intesting space operations. Just overall, alot could be done in this area.

Early 2000 - Things modernised quickly. Mobile phones grew even more quickly and the internet quickly became the mainstream. I could just see alot of interesting story missions and dialogue taking place.

Near future - The future hasn't been done in GTA since GTA 2. If they keep it in a near future and not too far away, i can't see it failing. Hell, maybe if Rockstar makes a futuristic GTA, it'll help shape the future we live in, if they come up with some cool stuff.
