Finn 7 five 11
Yeah never ending life = disaster for the planet, either we die at say 80, or live until 200 with an overpopulated planet, 10 guys who own everything in the whole world, and we are slowly suffocating due to pollution. But you could also be prolonging the lives of malignant cells,” Jaskelioff said. It's not all ice-cream and peaches. There is another research that suggests that tissue with many "old" cells is much more likely to turn cancerous. So while, yes, this is a problem, if the rate at which cells turn cancerous goes down significantly, you are still going to live much, much longer on average. I wouldn't worry about people living forever, though. Even if we reduce causes of death to accidental alone, we are still talking about less than 1000 years of average human life span. Meh we've still got oh what... war, poverty, disease, bad lifestyle (smoking, obesity) and so on. A longer lifespan's not such a bad thing. We'll just expand to space eventually to compensate overpopulation. By the time we figure out this process in humans we'll already be able to colonize in space... well at least I hope we will. Iminicus
Why would you want to anyway? It's miserable enough as it is. Cause then we could dick around fro 50+ years and then get serious. Plus, there are many people I am yet to piss off, so more time I need.
K^2
By the time we figure out this process in humans we'll already be able to colonize in space... Not really. This is basically a matter of them figuring out a way to make effective gene therapy treatments. By the time that's done, research on primates should be complete. So we're talking about 2 decades to clinical trials. You aren't looking at some abstract future possibility here. You are looking at something that will be extending your life, provided you don't kick the bucket prematurely and you can afford the treatment. GTA3Freak-2001
They should be focusing this on curing diseases rather then to extend the life of 'healthy" folk, this sort of stuff could have potential in many diseases where damaged and aged cells could be rejuvenated. AmyJones
f*ck all this bullsh*t, they already raised the f*cking retirement age to 69, this would keep us working until were 170. Brings the term "lifer" to life. What if you went ape-grapes in the head and got a LIFE prison sentence? we would have to build prisons on top of prisons. If you think life on retirement is the best you're going to get in life, you can just go ahead and cut off your own legs and retire on disability. Or you could save money for mini-retirements every couple of decades over the next few hundred years. Personally, I'd go for that one, but if you'd rather die old, crippled, and some time this century, suit yourself. Nobody insists that YOU should live forever. NO! because you see, all my f*cking blades are dull. That would take all damn day to do. then if I managed to cut my legs off that would make me a crazy person. Then lets say I had my shot, id be stuck in the crazy place for years and years, that would get so awful boring. I don't think my N64 will last that long. I dunno if you can get a disability check vut to you if you sliced your own sh*t off.

Internet-Ronin
Personally, I do like the idea of living longer AND healthier. But if i had money would fund a research that basically: 1)Weed out potential faulty babies with genetic screening (of parents) prior to birth. If your child be born sick and retarded (no pun intended), then please don't do it. It's miserable for the parents, the child and society. 2)Genetically modify baby so that it is healthy and smart. Thus there will be a generation superior in health and intelligence. A healthy mentality and smart individual means you won't have to deal with health problems, and stupid ideology and action that won't serve anybody. And this generation will basically lead mankind to a better world. 3)It is THEN, that this non-aging therapy can be applied to this generation that will make them even smarter (imagine the most brilliant people we've ever had living 200 years or more). I'm very certain that if all goes right, this could be the next evolution of mankind. And this would certainly be a much much better and more sustainable world than now. The problems of the plan: a) Ethical issues with starting the project b) With (2), how do we know we're not creating a monster? a genius but also a psychopath. 1 of them can create major damage. 860
I'm in. Even if I would get smashed by a car and live for just 80 years, I would do so while being physically twenty something. Would we then have to put our physical age and technical age separately on our drivers licenses and such?

K^2
Honesty, I hope I do die peacefully of old age. If I had to chose a way to die it'd be peacefully in my sleep one night. And for that, you are prepared to spend the last decades of your life in condition of which the best part is that you don't actually realize that you keep sh*tting yourself? Because by the time you're that age, they'll have ways to not let your heart fail until everything else does. Or are you just going to refuse medical help all together? And where do you draw the line. Would you like to die of terminal cancer without medical assistance? You're really not going to make it easier on yourself. A few decades from now, your best bet at fast, painless death will be in a fireball of a major accident. And besides, it's about the years you live. Death isn't that important. If you happen to die slowly and painfully, it's just the last hurdle to overcome, and you're not going to remember any of it, so who cares? Niko_Vercetti7
Or are you just going to refuse medical help all together? I refuse medical help now, and I'm still relatively young and healthy. If I refuse medical help now then why wouldn't I refuse it when I'm old. Unfortunately, cancer and other various blood diseases run in my family. I've had a few relatives die due to them and I've seen what chemotherapy, radiation, and other treatments do to your overall health. Sure, they kill the cancer but they also poison your body and make you age fifty years. As far as going senile and losing your mind goes I come from a strong minded bunch of people who somehow manage to keep their minds intact even throughout their oldest years. My grandmother is 91 and she still lives by herself and just recently quit driving, but thats only because the roads were she lives are full of lunatic drivers. The point being made is I'm prepared to sit in an old rocking chair sipping iced tea and watching the History/Discovery channel slowly dying for my last years of life rather then dying in an uncomfortable hospital bed plugged into a life support machine. Creed Bratton
Kinda cool if you ask me. I don't like the idea of leaving this world without seeing everything that we can accomplish. nerner
Death is probably one of the only things that gives us a sense of drive and determination to do anything. People procrastinate enough without having the added excuse of living for twice as long to completely destroy their ability to better themselves through hard work. Jesus'En'Hitler420
It seems everyone has a big fat chubby of an opinion on this but is it okay to say that I can be indifferent to this news? "So what" I ask... Take it or leave it. But will any of this be able to be done to already living humans? If I'm not mistaken, the article seems to say they modified the genes while the mice were still embryos. Or I just missed something, meh.
