Vote for your best/favourite Instrumental Rock/Neo Classical Metal guitar player and explain in a comment why.

Let me answer some of your questions before they will be asked: I didn't put Angus Young, Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Ritchie Blackmore, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Emmanuel and similar guitarists cause they are not playing ''Instrumental Rock'' or ''Neo Classical Metal'' genre biggrin.gif and they didn't make a solo career.

I saw Buckethead and immediately went for him. He's without a doubt my favourite artist and I don't see how people can't see his range. He can play music that's threatening, relaxing, moody and just plain beautiful.

Good choice. I respect Buckethead very much. He's Paul Gilbert's student for Christ sake. However, I chose Jason Becker cause he is absolutely the best guitar player and no one can touch him except maybe Shawn Lane. Jason Becker composed masterpieces in the ago of 16 and his songs are full of emotions and feeling. biggrin.gif

It's a common misconception that he was "taught" by Paul Gilbert. Rather, he had a few lessons from him and certainly took influence but I wouldn't say Paul Gilbert took him from the beginning and made this amazing guitar player. He certainly helped though.

No Alex Lifeson? Bullsh*t mad.gif

Dude, do you know why he isn't on this list? Cause he didn't make a solo career and he is not an Instrumental rock or Neo classical metal guitarist..

Got any better excuses?

Always considered these types generally as boring tryhards, but if I had to choose I'd go with Buckethead as well.

I picked Buckethead out of simple diversity, the stuff he writes can blow your mind away with any style, whether it be brutal or beautiful. I especially love his acoustic albums.

Petrucci's a close second though. smile.gif

mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.

I know it's a bit cliche, but I've got to go with Jimi Hendrix. He pushed the envelope with what he did and what he created, transforming himself from a blues guitarist to reinventing the instrument as we know it.

I could not make up my mind, I've watched soo many youtube videos by alot of these guys. My 'Favorite member of a band' would have to be John Petrucci of Dream Theater, but I did not vote for him. The most skilled I believe is either jason becker, MAB, or Yngwie... but actually, they're alllll very good.

I eventually chose Yngwie. He does amazing things with just a fender strat, and a marshall amp/stack (and some more pedals, but let's not skew..). I've also based a good deal of my techniques on what yngwie does... sweep picking technique, alt picking technique, fingering exercises... my tapping technique stems from buckethead and my sweep tapping technique derives from MAB tho.

...So yngwie, asshole or not, you got my vote icon14.gif

He's not an instrumental rock or neo classical metal guitarist/performer. He is a blues/rock guitarist with no unique guitar playing. I told that on the top of the topic.

Ah, I get you, but I don't care. If opinions count for anything he's the best I reckon.

I voted for Hendrix, but I did get a chance to see Jeff Beck at Bonnaroo last year, and he was f*cking incredible. Blew me away.

David Gilmour should be in there. He may have been the guitarist for Pink Floyd but he also has a solo career with 3 albums, which have some instrumental songs on them, especially his last album. Greatest guitar player ever in my opinion. And he has a unique guitar sound.

Yes. I agree that he is a good guitarist but I don't find him any close to these guys. Sorry.

I don't know, maybe not in straight guitar chops, but in terms of originality and actual artistic merit, Gilmour completely ruins blowhards like Michael Angelo Batio, that do little more than mindlessly noodle and shred.

I can't agree on that 100%..MAB has some good tracks without mindless noodling. However, when we are talking about real artists, there is no room for Gilmour among Jason Becker, Shawn Lane, Joe Satriani and others..They are the best of the best.

Wow not much love for Joe Satriani, I'm surprised. "Until we say goodbye" is one of my all time favourite pieces of music.

Such strong melody and emotion without going over the top. Not to mention he has chops when he needs them.
