E.A.B.
I'm not trying to start anything here, honestly*. Hell, I'm asking this because I got a 360 a couple of months back. But, back to the question at hand; why does Sony and Nintendo offer these services free of charge? To my understanding, Sony and Microsoft have very similar services online. In b4 'quality control', cause little kids simply need to spend their christmas money for a year membership. *I feel like something may start over this, but try and keep it civil, prease. sidenote: I got the 360 ARCADE version, cause I only plan on playing games and nothing more. I get an XBOX Live 1 year membership (against my better judgement) and BAM, 123 or so meg download required. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-I CAN GET A TERABYTE HARDDRIVE FOR UNDER 80 BUCKS BUT YOURS COSTS 100 AND FOR LESS THAN EVEN A QUARTER OF THAT?!? Edited November 27, 2010 by E.A.B. Node
well i dont know either but what we pay for is the service not the online part but the support that comes with it, see ps3 users dont have to pay for online but there support is sh*t and ours is brill because our support is the best. That is why ps3 servers are always bugging and messing up
NickRad
Well M$ use the "We give extra services" excuse when they could charge separately for Netflix etc
macorules94
The Playstation Network is run by 3rd Party Servers. That's why it's free, and is downed sometimes or under maintenance. Playing online, although, is actually the same on both consoles. @The_Sorrow the PS3 support isn't that bad, it's alright, but not as good as Xbox Lives. So I'd still rather the Ps3's free online than Xbox Live and paying $99 a year just for their 'online support'

Girish
Good that GFWL is free on PC then. It's sh*t, anyways. I think people will be more happy if MS provided an option to choose the online support. That way, only those opting for the online support will have to pay and the rest can have it for free. But I guess that won't be as beneficial for MS as it is now, so I don't see that happening in the near future.

[SM]CJZera
Because they are a bunch of greedy bastards and because they can Well now I have no need to say that... I wonder what kind of economy is this, with MS selling everything up tp and including their mothers for an extra buck... Want to buy this console? go ahead! Oh, you'll need this really simple cable, 20 bucks please... want to play online? sure, 50 bucks. Oh so you want a cheap hardrive to store stuff? Oh we'll give you an outdated one for more than a current one! Cough up 80 bucks please MS is being greedy, no news about that... not surprising either... I would actually be more worried if they didn't charge you for some service...

Cough up 80 bucks please I know I bought a stripped down version; but this truly pisses me off. f*ck, the Wii has Wi-Fi and I have to pay 100 dollars for it? sh*t son why don't they take my f*cking wallet. It's why I told my bro to not even bother with LIVE. I told him it's f*cking robbery. Of course, he's a fool. Whatever; his money, not mine. macorules94
Yeah. I had to pay $149.95 for a Wifi thingy, and plus $99.95 a month just to play online.
uNi
The answer is people. They'll always argue about how expensive this or that is, still purchase it though.
Punk-in-Drublic
I think it's ridiculous, I am a 360 user and I haven't paid for xbox live in so long. It's just greedy, surely Microsoft would attract more customers if they didn't charge for their online services. But just like JayC mentioned, people are willing to pay. james227uk
@PHCharls That's a basic reason at most. The main reason is 4 teh monies $$$. Everyone should know that Microsoft is a money grabbing company.
Ari Gold
Microsoft are money-grabbing because people have money, and in a world where basically everyone above the lower-class buy things when they don't really need it, or buy it out of credit, most things which cost +$200 have sustainable demand. When there's demand for a product, there needs to be sufficient supply for it, hence why they still offer it. It's how the free-market, capitalist economy works; the price for something is usually the median between supply and demand. Microsoft will only get rid of Live's price tag when people actually stop buying Microsoft products and they start making losses from a loss of demand (they wouldn't necessarily cut prices if those losses came about from external factors outside the market itself). [SM]CJZera
The proof of what Stefche said can be seen on GfWL for PC, they tried to make people pay, hardly anyone did, they made it free hardly anyone used it anyways... Unless it was required of course...
Mr-x
Microsoft are a business.. If they can get away with charging and people are willing to pay thats what they will do. Good Business sence! I would do the exact same.
[SM]CJZera
There's a diference between making money and being a douche about charging for everything like Ms... heck, I'm surprised that they don't charge extra for offline too... PS: If you don't think a business can make lots of money and give free things at the same time just look at valve
CharmingCharlie
CJZera,Nov 27 2010, 19:36]There's a diference between making money and being a douche about charging for everything like Ms... heck, I'm surprised that they don't charge extra for offline too... Technically it could be argued they do charge for offline play after all don't all console games come with an extra $10 royalty just so you can play the game on the respective console. It is kinda funny really out of all the systems, the PC, Wii, PS3 only the Xbox 360 charges for online. But at the end of the day it comes down to the user, you have a say and if you are not happy with paying online then use the power of competition to get MS to change it's ways. Kaj.
Jesus christ, Microsoft is a business. The goal of most businesses is to maximize profit. You act like this is something completely unheard of, and then crucify Microsoft for succeeding in their goals. Stop bitching about Live and go buy a PS3, or get a (better) job and quit complaining you have to pay for sh*t.
tubbs51
I have no issue with the cost of online on the 360 cause the games and the solidity of the online is worth it... i wouldnt mind a PS3 but only a couple of their games would get my attention... To each his own... i prefer to play xbox cause of its games and pay for online play because of it... could be worse... could be like WoW that charges an arm and a leg more than MS .... Darrel
It is a rip off. You buy the console, you pay for your internet connection, you pay for the games... that should be enough money spent in my view. It also sucks for Live members if you buy second hand, rent, or borrow used EA games. You then have to pay for a online pass for 10$ just to play that particular EA title online. Where will this madness end? Like EA dont make enough money. The gaming industry as a whole screws the sh*t out of customers these days especially with 'DLC'. Not only Microsoft are to blame. LuisBellic
This is the reason I never got Xbox LIVE. You already spend enough money for the f*cking system and internet cable. Remix
When I purchased the console, it was significantly cheaper than the Ps3, it came with a headset, and all my mates owned one. Those were the reasons alone I was happy to pay the price for online. In all honesty, it's really the price of one game for a whole year of online multiplayer. If I really cared that much about it, I would've bought a Ps3 in the first place. Microsoft want to make a profit, just like every other business (including Sony and Nintendo). They are succeeding. E.A.B.
Jesus christ, Microsoft is a business. The goal of most businesses is to maximize profit. You act like this is something completely unheard of, and then crucify Microsoft for succeeding in their goals. And you act as if customers complaining when they're getting anally raped is odd. I understand businesses try to get away with as much as possible to rake in the cash, but I'm not a CEO-I'm a customer. Customers will complain if they realize just how badly they're getting ripped off. It's pretty obvious, what with the PS3 having a lot of the 360's games AND online; PC as well. It's the power of the consumer and of public opinion. It changes sh*t practices like this. Once people find out that a burger at McDonalds is 10 dollars less (at $5.00) they'll complain and Burger King will be forced to lower their price. Businesses like to scam people, but people also don't like being scammed and force change. You can justify it by saying 'they like money; what else is new' but that doesn't change the fact that you're being ripped off-big time. The question for them is 'can we get away with it?' you have a say and if you are not happy with paying online then use the power of competition to get MS to change it's ways. How, exactly? You can only play online through Microsoft, right?
