I find myself cheering for Avon and Stringer despite knowing that they are the bad guys. I get the feeling it isnt going to end well for them and there's a sort of tragedy to them trying to act like they are on top of the world and own the streets when their 'empire' looks on shaky ground with the cops closing in and rival drug dealers growing in stature. There's something about Stringer trying to be this businessman like overlord that makes me interested in his character but he's made too many enemies (Mouzone, Omar, the cops) and possibly Avon too if he finds out about D'Angelo, that despite him nearly becoming legit i feel he is going to go down, fascinating to follow. I liked Avon from the start, must be his charisma

Marlo is a punk ass kid though i dont like him

I kinda hope McNulty gets capped,I think it's part of his character to be insufferable but damn he is insufferable. Its interesting to see how consumed people like him, Kima and Daniels are about their job to the point they cant lead normal lives with their family

lmao, Rawls is such an asshole.I guess that is part of the job but still

daaaaamn son how could you have not watched the wire up until now? be a little slow, be a little late!

also: rawls sucks cock!

I dont know what to think of that Tommy Carcetti guy, well intentioned or out for himself? Maybe both, but which more?

This show is so powerful and accurate in it's storytelling. I say this because this exactly how I felt about most characters and the storyline with the exception of Nulty who I like. He represents my distaste for authority. Other than that, the story isn't muddled or confusing. I think we all feel the same for Avon & Stringer. They're like anti-heros in this tale.

Same with Carcetti. I rand in to him twice over the last 6 months. My city is small and it's easy to run into the same person twice over time. It's surreal seeing on my favorite actors pondering about the place, especially an actor on The Wire.

I'm not saying anyone has spoiled anything here but if one was to spoil anything for anyone going late into this show, I'll be proposing they be banned.

I spent nearly half the day watching clips from The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos.

The comments section for them are either really thought-provoking or just funny as f*ck, no in between.

Just finisher s3e8 and that final scene was the best in the series so far. Its fascinating to see the direction the Barksdales are going. And that contrast with Stringer dressed like a businessman and Avon like a thug lol.

I still don't like Marlo and his crew

Rawls is a weird character. And damn the actor is good, playing that a-hole.

It's no groundbreaking story spoíler, just something that happens that some ppl might have missed.

Spoiler

There is this one episode where the brother is looking for Omar, his dumb "assistant" has to visit a gay club, and Rawls can be seen in there, it's just 2-3 seconds or something, but it's Rawls. I think a lot of ppl might have missed this. I had to laugh seeing this scene, that especially Rawls is gay, it just doesn't fit his character at all somehow. This is the only indication that he is gay, nobody in the series knows about it.

Im not sure atm, but i think this is season 3 episode 10.

I already watched The Wire 3 times completly. I think the first time i missed this.

After starting season 4, seems if I were in Marlo's Baltimore I would find myself in a vacant row house 😅

Season 4 seems a bit like season 2 to me in that I didn't really care about the new characters at first but appreciate on watching more that the city and the story feel more complete by tackling different themes each season

Some writing on a random toilet wall, hmm nah that doesn't have to mean anything. I was working in a bigger sh*tty factory for a while, somebody threatened to kill ppl on a specific day, he wrote it on a toilet wall. Not kidding the police showed up that day and guarded the area all day. It was so ridiculous because of some random text on a wall. I had to laugh real hard, when my backpack was checked that day by the police while entering the property. :D

Who do you side between Avon and Stringer? I prefer Avon way more but wasn't Stringer the more right one on this? Why did they need to beef on some corners when they were doing fine and perhaps better with their share of Prop Joes product but a couple of corners less. You could argue the minute Avon was released was when things turned to sh*t

Then again I don't like Stringer much, the way he did Wallace and D'Angelo, idk they may have been to silence anything that could threaten their organisation and perhaps the two were too soft for the game, but seemed excessive to me.  And his games with Davis, its clever that he tried to go legit but as Avon said he was too soft for the streets and too gangster for the offices. Also Avon is way more likeable, the way he treats Cutty and how he has the respect of people like Slim Charles. Also f*ck Stringer had he not sold out Avon they would have wrecked Marlo's crew, man. Avon sold Stringer out too but I like to believe that he would not have done it had Stringer not strained their relationship by revealing about DAngelo, no matter Mouzones threats. Maybe I am making excuses but still, its hard for me to root for Stringer but I do feel Avon was being stupid and stubborn about his Marlo war which he even concedes after Stringers death

I wonder who got the worse fate, if Avon was life imprisonment then I would say Avon actually

 Avon > Stringer

Spoiler

Avon atleast had a heart, Stringer was just a sociopath, i mean sending a hit squad after Omar on a Sunday, while he goes to church with his grandma, is just completly heartless.

The Stringer and Avon relationship was very similar to Dwayne and Playboy X in IV. I like Avon he had a code that Marlo didn't follow and Stringer was always backstabbing people and making stupid deals. I also liked Stringer and how he tried to go legit but Clay Davis tricked him and bled him dry lmaoo.

I can see that, the conflict of the old way of life in the streets versus the new way of making it big and growing out of the streets. Only difference being here they are more brothers than mentor-student but yeah.

Ngl I didn't think Playboy did anything that wrong, I didn't like Dwayne much but here I much prefer Avon to Stringer even if I thought Stringer was more right in their conflict.

I always watched the show in german, the "SCHEEEEEISSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEE", also was totally annoying. I usually only watch shows in original language, if the german version isn't released yet. It's just wayyyyy too much slang in The Wire for me, to understand it in englisch. Sure i could have activated german subtitles but reading all the time doesn't make it enjoyable. We got excellent voice actors in germany, so why not make use of it. Sure a lot of things get lost in translation, but that doesn't matter so much.

Maybe in my 4th rerun, in 5 or 10 years i do it in english. I mean it's not like i would still miss something, if i know the plot like the back of my hand.

Avon, unlike Stringer, knew exactly his place and his capabilities. He belonged to the hood and well knew it. Stringer, on the other hand, thought that attending university lectures and reading Adam Smith will help him go beyond the limits of the ''hood mentality'' and transform into a legitimate businessman. He, of course, failed and remained a brother from the hood who got smoothly played by the real players i.e Baltimore politicians.

Found out two cool bits of trivia about Cheese which made me go whoa

a) The actor who plays Cheese is part of the Wu Tang Clan in real life

b) spoiler about familial relation

Spoiler

Cheese is Randy's father

seems Wallace's actor has done well for himself too.

Avon and Stringer were childhood friends and ran the Barksdale organisation successfully to the top for a while but they really weren't the right combo huh. I have seen people say Avon and Stringer compliment each other perfectly because they were opposites in a sense but I feel they were too different, they wanted different things out of the drug trade (Avon the thrill of being kingpin and Stringer to grow out of it). I hated their split at first it felt too soon but thinking of it, now I am surprised things didn't didnt come to a head earlier

Marlo was a punk but he had a fantastic right hand man in Chris, man had the highest kill count in the Wire and you got the sense he could take on anybody but he stayed loyal to Marlo throughout and never grew ambitious. Chris and Snoop were a major reason for Marlos success

I wonder what a Slim Charles and Avon partnership would have been like in season 1 when Barksdales were at their peak. Slim had the smarts and was sensible to not poke his head out too much. Slim and Prop Joe were a great combo too it was so stupid how Prop Joe abandoned all his caution and decided to play father to Marlo. The coop should have taken out Marlo the instant he became a problem rather than trying to babysit him
