the 2nd viewing is as good as the first, if not better.

Definitely better. The show can be quite overwhelming. Despite all the interesting characters, it's not really a character drama like The Sopranos or Deadwood. In fact, if your focus is on characters, you're missing the majority of what the show is truly about. The characters and even the plot are just conduits for the big picture message that the show is trying to convey. There's a reason why there are books and college courses on The Wire.

This right here screams GTA to me. The way the camera moves around, Slim Charles and Snoop standing in the background, Prop Joe telling Marlo to steal a camera sounds like a GTA mission lol.

Idris Elba was one of the best actors on this show. I was shocked as hell when I found out he was British he sounded like he was straight from Maryland.

If COVID was a drug.

Pandemic, Pandemic! Those people always shouting out what they called their drugs always made me laugh. The best was WMD.

Used to love shouting "Pandemic" out randomly at parties. If someone got it, even better.

Posting this here again as some people may not have seen it in the Cyberpunk thread.

So I'm from Maryland and I went to public school all through middle school before going to a private high school. The attention to detail is insane I remember the MSA looking just like the paper and all that way back when I took it in 2006. The MSA is a test given in all public schools in Maryland with similar ones being called something else in other states I remember teachers and the entire school always being all serious about it and committing class time to focus on it.  Hardly learned anything useful from it they only did it to show which schools were doing well and which weren't the schools with higher test scores got more funding from the government idk if it's still around I think No Child left behind got repealed a few years ago.

Good news!

David Simon and George Pelacanos are teaming up again to do a HBO mini series set in Baltimore titled We Own This City. It's going to focus on the Gun Trace Task Force, a unit designed to get guns off the streets. However, that unit became very corrupt.

This is great news! Didn't know about this hope it comes out soon. I kinda hope that they tie it into The Wire somehow.

Not from Baltimore but I live in Maryland like 30 miles away from Baltimore. I live right next to DC but I've been to Baltimore a couple of times to go to Orioles games and sometimes helped my father out with his job of cleaning up foreclosed houses it legit looks like The Wire over there a bunch of abandoned houses and buildings for blocks Downtown and the harbor is nice but if you don't pay attention you'll end up in the hood very quickly.

I really hope so too. Didn't realise you are so close to Baltimore. That must be exciting travelling into that that city.  Next time you are there you should grab a few photos if you can.

Here's Season 1 map of events.

Crazy thing about a Season 1 location. That juvenille hall place where bodie escapes is actually not that far. I actually went over there a long time ago to pickup an old friend of mine who had to spend the weekend there because he got in a lot of trouble. I didn't actually know that they filmed that episode there that's crazy.

There was also that one episode where Michael and Dukie went to Six flags in Season 5.

Mcnulty name drops my city in Season 2 when he's talking to the FBI guy when he mentions a long distance call to Hyattsville.

Nice. Theres only been one relatively big crime show set in my city and I haven't seen it all. I'm not sure they used the city as realistically as The Wire.

Saw this on Reddit. More Simpsons satire.

It makes me nostalgic for the early 2000's. Watching the HD version looks amazing on my TV. I wish they would release a 4K version but David Simon was already against the HD version I don't think he'd like a 4K version 😭

Yeah me too. And kind of nostalgic for GTA IV because some of the vehicles and clothing of NPC's look like they could be in The Wire.

I had no idea David Simon was against the HD version. Iv'e seen the trailer and watched part of the HD version. It's quite impressive how they did it. Also, the trailer for the HD version is phenomenal.

I just ended up walking beside and in the same direction as Aiden Gillen aka Mayor Carcetti about 30mins ago! He's exactly how I imagined he would look like in real life. He was out walking with his partner but walking quicker ahead to not get noticed by the ever growing drunken crowds outside dining. If people haven't seen The Wire then they've seen him as Little Finger in Game of Thrones but in the 5 mins I was walking along stalking him only 2-3 people recognized him. He stopped and waited for his partner and I looked him right in the eye and he looked back. I had to bite my tongue. If I had a drink on me I might have said something but I'm conscious of annoying people when they're out.

Began my journey into this Baltimore tale. Finished the first two episodes and I got the sense that things are still getting warmed up. Eager to watch more (laziness permitting).

I took an instant liking to McNutty. Cedric seems like a cool character too.

It's interesting how they don't really give much exposition(is this the right term) about what is happening and you sort of have to figure it out yourself at times, compared to say Narcos where almost everything is explained as you watch. I'm more familiar with the latter approach so takes getting some used to but some of my favorite book series take the read on and learn more approach so I'll guess I'll watch on and find out 😛

I wanna see more of guys like Avon and Stringer dammit, I hope the Baltimore Police aren't always the focus like the first two episodes. I heard of the infamous Omar so I guess the other side of the law will get their spotlight. However it may be though, there is a very keeping it real feeling with the dialogue and they give the impression Baltimore is this rotting from the inside city but most of the characters kinda have this humorous demeanor it's kind of cool to see that bleak humour trying to go through a sh*tty situation.

Anyway I've rambled enough, will see more and hopefully get back here even though pretty sure nothing I say will be that groundbreaking to the experienced viewers lol.

Savor this moment. Season 1 introduces a lot of characters and plot points that will evolve over the course of the story so as a first time viewer you will miss some things here and there, but that's why the show gets better and better with each viewing.

You'll see plenty more of Avon's organization and the streets in general but also a lot more of the Baltimore police as well as other institutions so you'll have to get used to this dynamic.

And yeah the show has plenty of humorous moments in spite of the underlying message it's conveying. The Bunk himself will give you plenty of hilarious quotes for you to choose from. 😛

The street guys and the cops both get their time to shine and yeah how they show Baltimore is rotting from the inside is why we love it.

You are right, there is no exposition and no recaps! They wanted to make it as raw and real as possible. That means, no recaps cause life keeps moving on. There is a bit to digest in the first few episodes. Don't worry, you'll soon be in the know of who's who very quickly.

As mentioned that's what makes re-watches very rewarding. Especially season 1 when the first time you are getting to grips with who's who. It's like starting a new job as you try to figure everyone out and all the politics etc. But soon you know.

I also advise to prepare for Season 2 to take a slight detour (not in quality but where it focuses). Some people originally didn't like the slight detour but usually when people re-watch it they realize how great it actually is. I find with a bit of warning it can take the shock out of the change of environment. But don't worry, it comes back to where it began in Season 3. If you think of The Wire as a show about Baltimore and it's insitutions then it the focus in each season makes perfect sense. Baltimore is the main character like a GTA city is the main character. Baltimore defines the show and all the characters operate in the confines of the cities institutions; police, dockers and unions, school system, drug trade, politics, media. They're all connected and influence each other and the show ties them all up. It's amazing, really.

Either way, it's like GTA for me in many ways.  I criticized GTA IV a lot but that game is probably most like The Wire and for that I love it.

That's just heartbreaking. Such a great actor, who wonderfully performed in The Wire. Without Michael, this tv series wouldn't be so memorable and outstanding. RIP.

Just reading the daily news and it popped up, what a damn shame indeed.

Loved him in both The Wire and Boardwalk Empire.
