Doesn't that take away from the realism? i thought that was the whole point of not shooting the show in HD

The creator did say that he liked the non-HD gritty feel but it has been highly requested for The Wire to return in HD.

I don't know if this topic is spoiler-free but I'd like to share a few of my opinions. I've recently re-watched Season 2 and I've a bit touches on it...

Seriously, I think Season 2 is quite underrated. Probably, Season 2 has the best character development, and it's a big achievement when you consider the fact that this season's concern was the port and most of the heavy characters of this seasons have been generally "short-lived". Sobotkas are really interesting, honestly, I liked them all, and I don't get why there are such negative remorses towards Ziggy including his character was not cool and his actor was a bad casting. First of all, there's no need for a character to do badass sh*t to be liked, Ziggy has been one of the best example for this thesis of mine. Okay, I can agree that Zig has been a dumb f*ck to a bit level, but on the other hand he was actually stronger than he looked. Zig had been grinded by others during all time of his life, and sometimes I thought his "well-happily-go" nature was a cover for his bruises. I've really felt pity for him when he went wild and shot Double G to death. I can understand why Zig turned into such a loose cannon and he shot Glekas out of nowhere. Once again, he was disrespected and by stealing cars for Glekas, Zig was trying to show himself as a capable person, got out of the status people saw him as "outcasted idiot". That part really gave me the creeps, I was like "WTF!?", and for some reason, I think I had put myself in the shoes of Ziggy, which made it much more destructive in my perspective. Probably, Frank's visit to Zig during "Bad Dreams" was the most touching scene of Season 2.

Likewise, Frank and Nick were pretty good characters. Nicky was actually a badass and smart, he handled his condition and position perfectly in a tough world of excessive crime. I liked the plot of him getting involved of dealing drugs and developing an interesting mutual respect relationship with Vondas. On the other hand, by Frank and his brother Louis, two different perspectives on "Does it really worth to put effort on docks?" was showed, IMO. Really, Frank dedicated his whole life to put something useful on all of the dock workers' plate and on the other hand, Louis had seen all the truth behind it, it was not worth it. I think Frank did see it quite wisely but... y'know what I mean.

The fiction of Season 2 was pretty beyond what could be imagined. Like I said Zig putting Double G down really gave me the creeps. After big, old Frank Sobotka pulled out of the water with a slit throat... man, that was trippy yo. I wouldn't see that coming until Agent Koutris tipped The Greek off.

The Wire is probably the best TV show I've ever seen. It's beyond realistic, beyond I can imagine how realism could put perfectly inside a ficted TV show. Each season shows us a perspective from another different side of the city, and I think that's what all America and the other countries need... American television is really lucky to have given The Wire a place for some period of time. As soon as I get a steady Internet connection, I can't wait to continue from Season 3.

Season 2 was a surprising favourite for me. Especially on the second watching. I just think people didn't like the change of people/environment - It was too drastic.

It's my favorite too because it's the most human. I knew going in that it changed the cast every season.

People probably also don't like it because it ends on such a downer... not just loved characters getting killed off but it literally leaves no hope at all.

Alright, being a total noob to the wire, I have been thinking. Since this TV show was considered the best TV show of all time (alongside six feet under) before Breaking Bad was introduced, I have been thinking wether to first watch The wire, Six Feet Under, or The Sopranos. I completed watching Breaking Bad (obviously the best show of all time IMO) completed watching Dexter, and few other shows, I am lost at what my next tv show 'target' to watch is.

If anyone can help, thanks!

I wouldn't even include 6 Feet Under on the same list as the rest.

it's an excellent show but honestly doesn't hold a candle to most of what HBO was putting out at the time. you totally forgot about Oz and Deadwood, among others.

if you're picking new shows to watch in that category, your list should look more like this:
Deadwood > The Sopranos > The Wire > Oz > Breaking Bad > Game of Thrones > Boardwalk Empire > Rome > Dexter > Entourage > Weeds > Nurse Jackie

I think these three scenes from The Wire are enough to show what a well-built character Jay Landsman is and that Delaney Williams is such a talented actor. Honestly, I'm really enjoying the scenes with Jaybird, just not that he's a funny guy but also I enjoy the acting.

The next two scenes may contain possible spoilers, I guess...

"I thought we were friends."

The moment when "Bullsh*t!" is shouted loudly behind the crowd after he says he wants McNulty to catch the case if he is to lay on some Baltimore corner, he doesn't crack up.

Wire or Soprano's imo they are on equal footing.

If you choose to watch The Wire. some people dont like it for its realism. I would watch "The Corner" first, its a mini series. i think 6 eps. Its made by the same people and basically filmed the same way. its kinda like a prequel, has a lot of the same actors, just none of the same characters

I tried watching the first episode of this and I remember getting really bored halfway through. I'm almost done with my rewatch of The Sopranos and I might try this again next.

it's seriously one of the best shows ever written.

I don't know why you couldn't get through the first episode, but you owe yourself another shot.

I understand it's difficult at the start because the show doesn't hold your hand. There's a lot of characters names you need to remember and they get straight in to it. However, invest in a few episodes and if you are a fan of The Sopranos (my first love) you'll progress on and really appreciate The Wire. The payoff is great if you take the time to hear it out and get in involved.

The Wire is now available on HBO GO in full 1080p HD Widescreen.

Just started episode one on my second watch though and it looks great! Can't wait to relive all the moments of this series in HD.

If you have never seen The Wire, now is an amazing opportunity to watch what many call the best series created.

Update: After watching several episodes in HD, I can definitely say that this already amazing series is way better in the new format. Loving it.

3's the best and everyone knows it. The other's season have there moment's but not as much compared to 3. Introduces a lot of new characters all of which I love bar Carcetti but I suppose he's needed! Season 3s not all about Politics I'd say it would be more about Reform than anything!

I stumbled upon the wire one day back in 2010 when DirecTV picked up the rights to air it on their own channel The Audience Network. I was bored one night flipping through channels and ended up watching this show and got hooked. The writing on it was incredible there are just too many layers on this show they explored so much stuff The war on drugs, politics, school, the docks and they made it all fit together.

It takes a while to get into the show but when it builds up to major events it's worth it like Lester Freamon said "All the Pieces matter."

Also The Wire with a laugh track changes the entire show

Although Season 2 is surprisingly my all-time favourite, I can certainly give you a credit for this overview on Season 3. Season 3 explains the most solid foretellings of an upcoming, full-blown reform which includes almost every aspect about the city, especially the criminal underworld. I always say that, actually Season 3's main concern was not the politics, it feels like it because the politics' biggest footstep into the series was introduced during the series. Season 3 included lots besides politics, to show recreation in the city, and this even included most of the characters in the series. Prop Joe and Stringer's hard tries to re-built the "game", Avon trying to struggle while being stuck to old ethics, a new criminal face like Marlo introduced, a good, new fashioned reformer like Carcetti who starts to come up brave enough to sneakly showing middlefinger to the system... About characters, most distinctive example is McNulty who goes onto be a beat cop after his most probably biggest passion Stringer has gone away. Yeah, actually bigger than McNulty, Bubs can be the best example for this, during this season, he struggles hard to give upon his smack addiction, tries to uncover his full potential of a man who can make a living while staying clean, and probably Johnny's overdosed death was that thing which put his motivation at the peak.

BTW, Freamon be like...

I can't believe I never posted in this topic. Such an amazing show. Everyone's got a favorite season. Mine are 3-1-2-4-5. But I can't say that any one of them was bad. Each was simply different and trying to portray the city from every angle. This show aside from being the best written show (it's on par with Deadwood IMO), also has the most shocking scene of all time for me

Omar's death.

Not only did I not see that coming, but I was shaking when it happened. I was pissed even.

Yeah, I loved season 1 especially the second viewing because you know all the characters and you're not trying to remember peoples names and you have a bit of background to the work politics. Season 2 is one of my favs too. I'm on my 3rd viewing except I've only seen Season 5 once.

Definitely. It can be hard to follow when it's your first viewing and you don't know the how's and why's behind everything. But the second time around you already know what's going to happen so you can pay more attention to those details.

Great video thanks for that link.

The Wire is definately the best and most intelligent / realistic series I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!)

A must-watch for anyone who has not yet seen it (I've seen it twice up to now all the way through)
