progdog
I reckon take ideas used in other games. Because lets be honest, most games these days are based on ideas created from earlier games. I'd like to see free climbing seen in the assassins creed series, being able to scale buildings, houses, tall wire fences, bridges etc. It'll be a lot better than being limited to only grabbing onto low ledges and (painfully slowly) pulling yourself up. Niko felt far too slow and not very agile. Small objects like fire hydrants, boxes, homeless people etc should be able to be jumped with a more realistic animation depending on the object. and maybe tripping over if you fail to press jump? would look kinda funny tripping over a homeless man while fleeing from the cops. would also make you think more about your surroundings. Crowds will slow you down, but could hinder the police (if cops are chasing, they should hold back from shooting while around innocent civilians). It would make running away from police a little more challenging. Police should also have a personal 'line of sight' similar to that used in Metal Gear Solid, but obviously with more range. So if you run around a corner 20 metres ahead of them, they cannot see anything you do until they turn that same corner, by which you could've hidden (read further on) There should also very random brave civilians willing to risk there own safety to help out the cops, maybe guys that try to grab or push you as you are fleeing, drivers that try to block you in etc.. could work. Better collision control between player and worldly objects. Use balance systems seen in other games so that when you are, for example, walking along the edge of a building, you don't just accidentally fall off because you're going slightly the wrong angle, your characters feet should stick to the ledge and there should be a simple analog balance system in place, if you lean too far over you fall. Same goes with player vs pedestrian interaction, again, Assassins creed is the perfect example, simple animations that make you feel like you're walking through a crowd. The hiding system in assassins creed (hay bales, gardens, blending in with crowds) would also work well in GTA. for example jumping into skips (as seen in a GTA4 cutscene when Roman hides from the loan sharks), hiding in car boots, blending with large crowds, Hiding behind a hedge after escaping the police 'line of sight' (they didn't see you crouch behind the hedge did they?) lying in a doorway with a newspaper over your head? (could work) etc.. you get the idea. Could also use the 'jumping from rooftops into hay bales' system as well. Being able to jump off a roof (within a realistic height limit) and land in a skip full of rubbish bags, or into a small treetop, or into a hedge. But maybe little less 'automated' than assassins creed was. meaning you'd have to aim your jump pretty well otherwise it's gonna hurt. Vehicles need to feel like they have weight. Its always been to easy to push through countless cars with your own, you cannot push cars that easily in real life. Vehicles should also tolerate less damage. A head on should be an instant 'cars screwed'. hitting a curb at high speed should ruin your tires/alignment and steering. the speeds & handling on GTA feel far too unrealistic. you should be able to drive comfortably at the speed limit without feeling the need to overtake civilian cars. Traffic should flow better and civilian driving AI needs to be improved too. Also introduce peak traffic times. around 8-9am and 5-6pm the traffic should be ridiculously heavy making it very hard get through in a vehicle, especially if vehicle weight is introduced properly. also increase pedestrians at peak times. GTA 4 was great, but for a city like NY. It felt way, way, way too under populated and too quiet. Feel free to add your ideas on this topic. P.S. to 'Ryan' (you know who you are) don't post that link to wishlist thread bullsh*t that you post on every other new idea. Nobody wants to wade through hundreds of pages of mainly people saying 'bring back SA!' and not actually find anything interesting. This forum needs different categories for wishlist/ideas. Makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Edited November 25, 2010 by progdog
AceRay
so, you want to turn GTA into a modern day assassin's creed? If I wanted to get the top of a building, I'll take a helicopter. some of your ideas are good, but I think I will reframe

And I didn't mean scaling large buildings, thats just ridiculous. Climbing buildings 'to an extent'. Edited November 25, 2010 by progdog
WhistleBlower
I'd like to see one of Nathan Drake's epic jumps and basic platforming skills integrated into the protagonist of the next GTA. I think that would make the gameplay more fun -- if the developers wouldn't focus on the realism so much.

But Niko isn't a Porsche, he's a tank. he's not a nimble, quick young action hero, he's a tough, war hardened hit man. I guess it really comes down to what sort of dude the pro is. Plus, GTA is more of a "slow" game outside cars. ie use cover, move slowly, kill every enemy. Its not a run and gun game. I like the idea of being on the side of a building.
