UNRATED69
I haven't used GIMP in a while, so this might not be of much help. If you want a GTA logo, you can just find one on the internet, and erase any background colors. To make a transparent background, when you create a new document, you can choose the background color. Just set it to transparent. Alternatively, you can use the Color to Alpha feature to erase the same color from the entire document. Hope this helps. The-King
The most important thing to remember in the end is the file type, you need to make sure, if you're intending to make something transparent, to save it as either a .gif which can't use alpha transparency or a .png, which is much, much better quality and capable of alpha transparency. Alpha transparency being semi-transparency, which is what makes anti-aliasing and shadows possible. |PropagandaIncorporated:|: Steam:|: DeviantArt:|: Last.FM|

Mati
Thanks. The problem was that everything white inside the logo turned transparent too. I managed to make a writing myself, with transparent background trough. Edited November 25, 2010 by mati1501

Rojo89
Is good considering it's your first attempt, it can use some extra work if you ask me, eg. smooth out the light thing, you can se the lines where it ends. If you enjoy doing that continue making your own stuff, if not, theres allways the GFX request section.

Tyler
The most important thing about gimp is the fact that you need to learn how to keep multiple path tabs open with it. Go to the Windows tab and open up both the path window and the layer window, so you can easily manage the whole thing. After that, it's all dependant on how you can operate. I suggest doing a couple of tutorials online to get the feel of the tool-layout, then continue trying out different things with that. GIMP is easy once you know how to fully operate it, trust me. I used to think it was hopeless, but after a few TUTs, I was making planets Here, try these beginner tutorials, I used these to get familiar with gimp myself. Just pace yourself and make sure you don't get lost amongst the directions. Ultimate Planet Creation Kit The Basic Tutorial Shtuff Tutorials Website, with many options to try out. Node
hey man to make a transparent background in gimp all you need to do is: 1.open gimp go to new and enter your file settings, click ok 2.you should have a white background, go on your layers tab and right click on the "background" layer and select "add alpha channel" 3.go in the tools panel and select the magic wand, click on the white background and press delete. done. Tyler
It's much more simpler then that. Just click the layer and change the Opacity to your desired transparency. No need to go through the jibble jabble.

Wolf68k
@Unoriginal44 and The_Sorrow Admittedly I haven't use GiMP since it was in beta for Windows and have stuck to Photoshop since. With that in mind you both confused the hell out of me. If GiMP is anything like Photoshop in regards to how it handles the background layer, and layers in general, the background layer is locked meaning that you can change the pixels on it (ie draw/write on it) but you can't the opacity or blend mode which also means if you erase any pixels on the layer they are replaced with whatever the background color it. In Photoshop you simply unlock the background layer making it a standard layer. Now when you erase anything the background is transparent. I'm even more confused by "...click the layer and change the Opacity to your desired transparency..." for making a transparent image If you have a white background layer, that's just plain white and nothing else in it. Then just delete the layer. If however you trying to remove the white from the background of, the lowering the opacity wouldn't just lower it for the white it would lower it for all of the pixels. While the magic wand is a fine tool, it's also like using a steak knife to perform surgery...great for opening the skin but not for fine detail cutting. The Pen tool is a better choice, not the best because ever situation is different. You can control and fine tune your path before making it a selection and doing whatever. More work, yes, but better control. @mati1501 It's fine work for a beginner. Do you really want that white hazy glow around the GTA logo though? You have 2 options to get rid of it. Learn to use the Pen tool, but that stage it's in now it would just be more work. Or use the eraser and don't be afraid to zoom in really close to get those small single pixel ones out. Your only other option would be to create it yourself using the Pricedown font, some creative moving of the text for each word on it's own layer and then adding an outer stroke to the letters to get that black edge. That's the easy part, doing the GTA words. Recreating the Vice City part to look exact is another matter and no so easy to do.

Tyler
I use Linux and Gimp, and Opacity can easily be changed on any layer, because the layers are all unlocked. I see an option to lock them, are you sure you weren't just working with that on? Anyway, you can also just start off with a transparent layer. Remember, GIMP does get updates.
