First of all, you cant link to your shopping cart and have us see it. You have to make a public wishlist or something.

Second, Frys doesn't hire people that know what they are talking about usually, so take what anyone there says with a grain of salt.

...Frys doesn't hire people that know what they are talking about usually, so take what anyone there says with a grain of salt.

This is unfortunately the case pretty much anywhere for that type of store. A dedicated computer / tech shop or high-end custom shop is more likely to have actual edumacated folks that know a socket from a hole in the ground. Don't blame them too much though.

If Fry's (or any of those types) threw down salaries tasty enough to actually draw in that type of rep it would blow their pricing and ruin that part of the business. I'm sure BestBuy would love them to do it.

heh exactly my point. If Frys did what I said it would push a big chunk of that partcular customer base straight into BB (and others) hands because the bulk of those folks don't know (and in many cases don't care) enough about the details. They just want to describe what they want and have someone say "Oh sure you just need this and this. Take this PC for example... it does blah blah" and chaching out the door.

I've worked for both Best Buy's Geek Squad and Frys. Worst jobs of my life. Ended up starting my own shop after that.

Anyway, still not seeing it and it doesn't show up with that search. Are you sure you set it as public?

Excellent. Have fun (litterally) putting it together smile.gif

And I like the 460 choice but that's because I'm biased. Once you get everything together and burn the system in and all is rock-solid, you should have a great success cranking the clocks on the 460 up and up. EVGA Precision is what I suggest if you don't want to mess with voltages too, otherwise the MSI Afterburner tool. Both work just fine against reference boards and should work perfectly fine regardless of manufacturer unless they've made some strange core changes that confuse the tools.

The CPU will definitely be the limiting factor for GTA 4 in this build, that being said it will run it well, just the GPU will do so better.

I recommend you grab a cheap cooler (Coolermaster Tx3 or Hyper212+) and run a slight overclock, 3.4ghz or around there for a performance boost.

@BLKMAG & IronHide-AW mercie_blink.gif Huh????

Ironside is suggesting you overclock the GPU - free performance?

A summary of my post: I don't believe that CPU will run GTA 4 at max settings. - It probably will with an overclock.

@BLKMAG & IronHide-AW  mercie_blink.gif Huh????

The GTX460 is one of the best overclockable GPU in a long time. In other words, the factory clock speeds it ships with can be increased yielding better performance. EVGA Precision is a (quality) example of a utility you can use to accomplish that, among many other very useful features.

See this link for more information on it. A little research / google on EVGA Precision would also help you more fully understand it. Since you have a friend you say is more knowledgable about building computers, they also likely know a bit about overclocking too.

I think you guys should speak in detail on this game setting cause I've hear all the time

"I can play this game with smooth FPS by having max settings"

What is "max settings"?

GTA IV max setting is "Very high" and about 99% of the systems here won't be able to play the game at those settings!

And not all users will have the same slider setting when it comes to "view distance, vehicle density, and detail distance"

@OP, the CPU is fine, you can opt for a OC, but it's not necessary.

Most people mod for realism, but that's another story. The GTX460 is an excellent GPU, I'm partial to Nvidia myself, after having been on the ATI bandwagon for a year with a 5770. I now own a GTX 470, which is the right combo of performance and budget. wink.gif

BTW, I suggest you do make some overclocks on the GPU, because trust me, I used to have a sh*tty PC until last year, running a 5500 Nvidia card (extremely old), and thought "yeah I'll settle for stuff that will run the game at medium settings". After a while I wanted to push the game hard, but I couldn't because I didn't spend 50 more for a better GPU. sarcasm.gif Learning my lesson, I got the GTX 470, and now run ENB with very high settings, with a good smooth FPS. My advice is to thoroughly research, and spend a little more if you want to. Because trust me, gaming on the PC will grab you by the balls and won't let go. tounge2.gif

I think a good CPU (Phenom II X4 965, Core i5 750 or higher) with a graphics unit with more then the usual 1024MB of Video Ram (1280 MB GTX 470, 1536 MB GTX 480 & 580, 2048 MB Radeon 5970, etc....) might be able to run GTA IV completely maxed out at 1920 x 1080

everything is ok but i recommended intel i5 750 for you

AMD is the best way to go right now. Price/Performance is unbeatable for the Phenoms II X4 and X6 1055T.

As cheap as the Phenom II X6s are, the performance of AMD sucks, if you ask me.

1. In bechmark tests, the Phenom II X6 can't even beat out the Core i5 750, so don't even bother with the i7s

2. A 6-Core Processor that has 6MB of L3 Cache is stupid if you ask me. The 6 core i7 970 and 980X has 12 MB of L3 cache, double the 1090T

3. AMD has no hyperthreading, so they are either 4 threads or 6 threads. Intel does, so its i7s have 8 threads or 12 threads, which easily own AMD's CPUs

AMD might be cheap, but in my opinion, it's the same as buying 250 bucks of sh*t.

Even higher clocked Athlon II X4 CPUs without any L3 Cache can max out all games without problems and guarantuee high FPS also in GTA IV.

So i tam afraid you see the whole thing from the point of an Intel Fanboy.

Even The Core i7 950 which is extremely expensive (3x more than the 1090T?) can´t really runaway from it performancewise. Especially in Games the difference can be almost ignored.

Intel Corei7 950 and Phenom II X6 1090T Comparison

Sure if you have tons of money you should go with Intel. But if not, there is no reason for spending 3x that account for having some minor FPS increases.
