I can see where you're coming from with this topic but an alternative view would be that if Person B spent the time they use complaining about Person A having all the advantages a bit more wisely; networking, getting education, getting experience they would be able to kick Person A in the nuts and bash them over the head or whatever your point was to get the job.

Person B in this topic is personified by SWEantiX, who should be put down for society's benefit

Networking's just as good as your ability at your job. My god-brother has a Masters in Economics, but couldn't find a job for four years (mind you, this was during the GFC, but still). He only found a job at some sh*tty, mid-level suburban advisory firm because his cousin's some low-level accountant there.

So, I suggest you network the sh*t out of yourself at uni, EAB, 'cause that sh*t's crucial.

Very true in terms of getting jobs, not so true in terms of keeping them.

Networking helps you getting employment, there's no doubt about that. But unless you can grasp it's fundamental basics and do a half-respectable job of fulfilling your job criteria, you'll be out of there faster than a whippet with an arse full of dynamite.

People = sex, eating, fighting. But the more we have to think, the better we become. Explains all of history, try and f*cking argue with it.

Hahaha QTF, probably the simplest and truest way to describe humanity I've ever heard. tounge2.gif

@ Black-hawk: I'll watch the vid - beats wasting an hour in a wrap-up lecture by some bitch struggling to recall the simplest things - then acts all angry and offended when one of us corrects one of her many pathetically trivial mistakes.

It'll be interesting to see what experts in that kinda thing like K^2 will make of it.

Thanks for the vid man. icon14.gif

@ Jesus'n'Hitler: Excellent point man, I can't have said it any better. You are completely right in that most people here are the richest 1/3 (or more likely 20%) on the planet, and complaining about being held down by richer people is ridiculous given what little 80% of humanity out there has.

Admittedly, I am not in college. I most likely won't be going to college, except perhaps a culinary school a year down the road or so.

I have 3 brothers, all of which graduated with college degrees. All 3 are currently unemployed, they can't find a job, they are drowning in debt and student loans, and are struggling to make ends meet in their own apartments

Same story with my uncle, spent godly amounts of money for 4 semesters of uni and ended up not even doing anything with his degree. Ended up waiting tables years after and finally became a delivery guy who supplies ice-cream to markets and grocery stores. He now lives in a very middle-class home, wonderful guy though

Even my brothers girlfriend, who is a certified nurse (and you'd figure hospital jobs are always in demand) is struggling as well.

Sorry, but I look at all these people and then I have absolutely no motivation to go to college. Not that I have low self-esteem or anything, but I don't fancy my parents spending $80000~ on me for something that has little chance of seeing a return. It certainly hasn't for my brothers, or much of my other family.

I have a job currently, a decent one. I feel absolutely fine.. I am already making profit, not much for my age mind you but it's still okay. I'm doing something I probably would have been doing anyway during or after college.

It depends on what you're doing at college. I mean, there are courses at uni now for f*cking Linguistics. Just about everything's at college now, so unless you're doing something worthwhile which would be in a lot of demand, then most likely, your college degree won't help much at all. Not to knock on your three brothers or your uncle as I'm not trying to put them down in any way, but, completing four years of medicine is bound to get you many more jobs than doing four years of marketing and management, even if they're both at the same university.

Although, it is strange about your brother's girlfriend; do you live in an urban area or a rural area? 'Cause, in very large cities there's bound to be a job in health somewhere, whereas in rural areas there's supposedly a lack of health professionals in all fields. So, if you're somewhere in the middle, it might be worthwhile looking at some jobs in nearby large cities or small towns, especially since the US is experiencing a brain drain (if I recall correctly). icon14.gif

dog_day_sunrise: Oh, of course. If you're good enough at your job, whatever that job may be, then you'll be swimming well, but even having those extra connections created from your networking can act as an extra life vest in the sea of life.

@OP: More disposable income, more opportunities, better medical care and cheaper food than ever before?

I don't see what your problem is.

My problem is that you need a College degree for sh*t that really doesn't require one. I always hear stories of people graduating in X and getting a job in Y that barely pays more than minimum wage

That's kinda changing the scope of the topic, but it's free flowin'

Remember when Will Hunting said 'You end up paying 150 grand for a diploma when you coulda got the same education for a buck fifty in late fees at the library'? Well it's true.

I wouldn't mind the high cost if it was actually required.

And by that, I mean; I studied subject X and expect to do sh*t that requires my extensive knowledge in Subject X. Not putting peg O in slot O.

If anyone's curious-I just had an extensive conversation about College in general which is why my tone may sound surprisingly bitter (for someone that hasn't even been there yet).

Trust me, you do need a degree for some lines of work.

However, too many jobs require a generic degree (usually 2:1 or above in the UK) as a prerequisite, regardless of whether said degree has anything to do with the job. That I don't personally understand.

Like Stefche touched upon, unless subject X happens to be a science, maths, medicine, economics or law degree, it doesn't stand a very good chance of making you more employable in 95% of jobs. I am very snobbish about subjects people choose at university, and for good reason: just because you enjoy arts doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it at university. Typically anything outside the aforementioned subjects won't give you/won't exercise skills you use in today's jobs.

Also you mention if someone doesn't have a strong enough CV they will be 'stuck on the lowest rung,' this is completely false because when you apply for intern-ships and jobs you are supposed to apply to many, and you are supposed to always work to making your CV stronger.

History & international relations also have quite high employment rates, as do foreign languages.

Agreed though, many humanities are a waste of time. There's no better way to make yourself completely unemployable than by a degree in media studies or creative writing.

This'll get you even more scared.  Love it.

Absolute nonsense, I had the privilege to see Mr. Suzuki speak but I don't really remember his saying anything that extreme about exponential growth.

This whole topic and basically almost everyone in it (I'll be bold today), is wrong. The economy is not a zero sum game, as in someone's gain is not another persons loss. This is a very basic principle of economics that has been known for hundreds of years. Wealth grows generally, the rich get richer and the poor get richer too, and this says nothing for the gap between the two, but it is absolutely true that living standards in the world are on an incline.

The only way to increase living standards, in the third world and otherwise is to maintain GDP growth. This is exponential growth, it is not suicidal, and to believe otherwise is to relegate the majority of the world's population to perpetual poverty. There is a reason nobody lets environmentalists make economic decisions, they would drive the economy into the ground.

EDIT: Humanities isn't just for people who want to work in humanities. Degrees in university don't correlate with equivalent employment, employers are looking for someone at least intelligent enough to put themselves though university, unless of course it is for something very degree specific.
