dog_day_sunrise
It's also true that people proclaiming 'WWIII' are good humorists Well, even if it is far from happening, I would still re-join if sh*t hit the fan. And I salute you for your patriotism. But this war would simply be a relic of the past. An UNRESOLVED past....I think. North Korea isn't relevant. I wouldn't kill myself over it. Hell, the Korean army is probably dead due to starvation right about now. Quite true. It's all posturing. Violent posturing, but posturing nonetheless. We aren't going to see World War III or even a proper war over this, or anything else to do with the two Koreas. Principally, because although China offers economic and political assistance to Pyongyang, they have no desire to be dragged into a conflict by the DPRK, and have tried to distance themselves as much as possible from the regime in light of the recent attacks. Conversely, even though the US has made little in the way of signs regarding the shelling, they are in a position to support their allies in the South, as the international consensus is that it is the North's aggression that is the main issue, and therefore a US assisted decapitation strike or pre-emptive attack on DPRK military facilities would be relatively easy to sanction, even without the backing of Russia and China. China would not seek to retaliate on behalf of the North, as they know it would damage their international standing far more than it would aid their relations with the DPRK. Again, a perfect example of realism and self-interest. The DPRK is laughable in terms of their over-exaggeration of their military strength. Two failed nuclear tests (both fizzles according to most international sources) and they're claiming they've cloned humans and developed Cold Fusion. I honestly believe that their regime is not long for this world.

Tyler
Hell, I picked the time to re-enlist! Bernard Jazz
I doubt any other country will get involved unless it escalates into full on conflict where boat loads of civilians are killed. [SM]CJZera
Wake me up when the nukes begin to drop... Now seriously, this could get out of hand very easily... or end in days... it all depends on how crazy that Kim Jong is... Still, Korea is poorly armed... I bet this will not end good for them... dog_day_sunrise
CJZera' date='Nov 23 2010, 13:30'] Wake me up when the nukes begin to drop... I wouldn't even be worried if they did. Both of DPRK's nuclear tests have been fizzles. Not much more than a glorified dirty bomb. And they don't have the delivery system to hit anything of much importance anyway. If all hell does break loose, this is what will go down. 1) US deploys carrier battle group off the coast of South Korea and engages in electronic warfare against DPRK. 2) DPRK fires conventional SRBM/Cruise missiles at US battle fleet. Some miss, some are shot down by Phalanx CIWSs, and other ABM systems onboard the AEGIS equipped ships. Invariable, some hit their targets resulting in damage to US ships, the possible sinking of one or two, and the loss of say 100-odd sailors. 3) US retaliates with salvo of Tomahawks, engaged in active jamming of DPRK radar facilities and low-level stand-off strikes with aircraft equipped with anti-radiation missile and GPS guided bombs. DPRK looses it's SAM missile shield, suffers damage to it's military command and control ability and has it's nuclear enrichment facilities destroyed. DPRK air force largely destroyed on the ground. 4) DPRK backs down as they cannot escalate aggression further without having their war-making ability largely annihilated. 5) China complains, Russia stays silent, everyone else pats the US on the back for a job well done. 6) DPRK continues to make motions of aggression towards US, Japan and South Korea, but level of tension returns to early 90's levels. Minus the Boom
why dont we just push the button and get it over with? Because unlike your account, the world isn't run by 5 year olds. I don't wanna start a quote train, so; the US-Chinese relationship is like a middle age couple that doesn't like each other that much, but are together because its more economically viable that way. Yep, I think that sums it up well This sums it up indeed. Battlefield 3: Revenge of North Korea. The game's campaign is only 2 hours. There's a lot of collateral damage that can happen at any moment because of this... BTW that umbrella traffic women is a joke, right? The only country with anything approaching an amicable relation with the DPRK is China. The US happens to be one of their largest, if not their largest, export market. DPRK provides nothing to China and only ever succeeds in embarrassing them globally. A US strike against North Korea would not be enough justification for China to attack the US. As I said before, they have too little to gain and too much to loose if they side with the DPRK after such latent displays of aggression. True, there would be some harsh words, possibly trade would suffer, but at the end of the day China is interested in it's own balance of power and trading relationships, and the destruction of the DPRK's military might would do little to damage either. In fact, the performance of the DPRK in such a conflict without support from China would be of great interest to the Chinese military. As the majority of North Korean military supplies stem from Chinese designs and companies, it would present an excellent opportunity to assess their operational effectiveness against a hostile force. K^2
I'd happily re enlist in the Air Force if we declared war on the North. Don't know, man. Last time, Soviets placed some mighty impressive AA systems there. Modern Russian AA is still one of the very few things that can shake US air superiority. If a few of these find their way to NK, either via China or directly from Russia (Russia shares border with NK. They don't want US in NK any more than Chinese do.) I would not want to be a pilot flying over NK. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.
