How to use window cleaning platform

In the gta4.net mission guide, in 'Late Checkout' they say you can leave the hotel by using the window cleaning platform on the roof. I tried by pressing buttons when on it, bu instead fell down below and died.

Press the use key, the same one for computers and picking up stuff.

So will a prompt sign appear like when you can use the computer?

On xbox it's LB, on PS3 it's L1 and on PC it's whatever the ''use button'' is. You have to hold it and use the stick (console) or movement keys (PC) to go up and down. Whenever you hold the button/key, he should put his hand on the little console thing. It can be glitchy, though.
