Character Model

Recommended Posts

Now this might be strange but in my opinion the player models in IV feel somewhat cubeish and unrealistic. Now there are many great 3rd person shooters out there and one that springs to mind is Uncharted 2. Now compare these 2 and you'll get what I mean. Basically we need more realistic movement as well ie. climbing

Not really, the character models in GTA 4 were really good, is just a different style that Uncharted. GTA take a huge stept forward in this department compared with the very cartoonish models that we have in IIIera, now everything looks way more realistic.

Now for the climbing animation, sure it can use a little bit of work in some areas, but in general was pretty decent, it let us do almost anything we needed in a game like GTA. In the other hand we have Uncharted in wich a big element of its gameplay is platforming, the character animations have to be more accurate so you can pull off the precision jumping and other stuff. I don't think its fair to compare the two of them in those terms.

I think models in GTA IV are more realistic than uncharted...

But some character models look similar

example:

just look FRANCIS MCREARY look almost the same as NIKO...

No.

It's a fact that Uncharted 2 blows GTA IV out of the water. I'm sorry, but if you think otherwise, then you're pretty delusional. Besides, you're comparing an exclusive Naughty Dog title to a multiplatform Rockstar title. A linear game that's actually fun to a sandbox title that was overrated because it ironically focused on the realism too much.

I think the character models are a huge step up from previous games. They actually look human instead of like cartoon characters. Keeping in mind this have nothing to do with current gen technology. They even lacked compared to games from their own time.

As for climbing lets not forget in Uncharted/Uncharted 2 the gameplay is much more fast paced, and one of the big factors in the core gameplay is the ability to climb since you use it so much.

In GTA IV the climbing isn't the best sure, but it's alright for how often you actually use it.

No.

No it's not a fact you moron. If you like it more then good for you, but your opinion doesn't equal a fact.

The climbing in RDR looked pretty good; so the next GTA will have better climbing no doubt. As for the models, the San Andreas models to GTA IV are way different. Plus, theres Euporia which is 100x better than the old fall down arms and legs spread stuff

I know this is a GTA forum, so people are quick to defend GTA IV and pretend the criticism for it doesn't exist, but how about you try that again next time without the insult?

I'd probably go as far as to say it's a fact too.

There's a difference between liking a games graphics and a games graphics being superior to another.

Character models in this case; whereas someone may prefer the general look and art style used on the IV models, the Uncharted models are most definitely 'better' as in more complex, more detailed, more realistic and better rendered.

Edit: just to add, the main characters models in GTA IV use 8 to 10,000 polygons and the main character models in Uncharted 2 use 20 to 30,000 polygons (even the generic enemies in U2 are more detailed than Niko in IV with between 12 to 15,000 polygons). Nathan Drake himself in Uncharted is made up of 30,000 polygons.

I think InFamous looks better than GTA IV.

sh*t, I hope no one gives me the "GTA IV sold millions, so it must be good" routine of comments. GTA IV doesn't even have the fun gameplay to fall back on, but I digress... bottom-line is that it's pretty much a fact that a lot of games look better than GTA IV. Try not to lose any sleep over it.

WhistleBlower: There's nothing wrong with criticism of GTA IV. Now I apologize for calling you a moron, but if there's one thing I can't stand on this forum is it's when someone tries to disguise their opinion as a fact.

Uncharted 2 "blowing" GTA IV out of the water is just your opinion. It's not a fact, so please don't try to pass it off as one. It's obvious you don't like GTA IV, and that's fine. I don't condemn anyone for their preference when it comes to gaming. I just found it ignorant that's all.

As for there being better looking games than GTA IV...well there are better looking games than Uncharted 2. What's your point? The graphics in GTA IV aren't perfect, so there's no need to try, and rain on the parade when there's no parade to rain on.

Which games?...

Why aren't you questioning WhistleBlower for the same statement against GTA IV?

To answer your question Heavy Rain, and MGS4 look better than Uncharted 2.

The Lolwut Pear

Well, first off GTA IV was released in 2008.

Second of all, the game already has to render several hundred models for objects, the city, pedestrians, etc.

Although judging from LA Noire, Rockstar seems to be getting better, so we should expect better character models in GTA V.

Because I'm fully aware that lots of games looks better then GTA IV. But I don't believe that any games so far, or to come has surpassed UC2 in graphics.

I'ma first of paste what I said on the last page:

The main characters models in GTA IV use 8 to 10,000 polygons and the main character models in Uncharted 2 use 20 to 30,000 polygons (even the generic enemies in U2 are more detailed than Niko in IV with between 12 to 15,000 polygons). Nathan Drake himself in Uncharted is made up of 30,000 polygons.

Heavy Rain's character models are okay - they capture human properties well, but things like lighting and tiny details stop them from looking as lifelike as possible. Metal Gear Solid 4 I could almost agree with, I'm indecisive; Uncharteds characters look a lot more lifelike but MGS4's look pretty damn good too so I'm unsure there but I'd still say Uncharted just about overtakes MGS there.

So yeah, I agree with Maxopower that (on consoles at least) no game has really surpassed U2 in visuals/characters. LA Noire looks like it can definitely give it a run for its money in terms of the facial animation, but even then the characters dont look great overall and the faces look a bit waxy and undefined (which is likely a downside to the tech).

I understand that games like Fight Night look great, but you have to take into account that it's just two people in a ring so they don't really have to model much else in the game other than the fighters - and I understand that GTA is open world but for anyone who's played Uncharted 1/2 you'll know it's not short on scale or detail so it's definitely possible if they put the time to it for GTA. As for Heavy Rain, that's basically one long QTE/Cutscene.

And then there's InFamous 2.
