GTAIV without ELCS performance tip!

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I have a decent rig, i7 870 and now an nvidia GTX 470 with 1280 MB. Previously I had a GTS 450 but I upgraded it just for a little more juice, NOT just for this game.

I was upset to see that performance for the original GTAIV did not really improve. I blame it on one thing - the shadows. Turn shadows off and get playable framerates. Turn them back on to anything above low and the framerate will often be in the low 20s. Low shadows look not so good

So here is what I did, I uninstalled the game, reinstalled, applied 1.0.4.0 (The last patch before the ELCS update) and that fixed it. The game can now run at 1920x1080 with 30-60 fps and rarely dips below 30. The shadows are the 'old style' with the dithering on the edges but that's okay with me. I don't own ELCS either so I don't care. Amazing that some people on this forum recommend upgrading to $1000s of dollars+ for better hardware just to run this game at a playable framerate when the best solution is to run an older version. Who would've thunk it? So to those of you here with your 12 core processors and video cards that are so advanced that they don't exist to the general public yet (cause you're trolling) and say you get amazing framerates... Good for you. My computer isn't imaginary so I opted for an easier solution and it's working. Hope this helps

The system you have is consider bleeding edge and I'll bet most of the member here can't afford it.

Therefore your rant is completely pointless.

It is a bit of a rant, but I think it contains a good point.

If I roll back to an earlier patch, I also see a performance gain. However, if you want to use multiplayer (and I do), you have to install the latest one.

It is a bit pointless to put this down to "look at my system" kind of rant.

It is a known fact that setting shadows to high kills the fps. I have a mere I7 920, with a mere GTX260 with 1.8 GB of memory, patch 5 1.0.0.4 gave me fps in the high 50's, after applying patch 6/7 and shadows to high, it dropped to the 20's. That's a noticeable drop in FPS no matter what anyone says. Setting them to medium kind of fixes it.

I would have thought the GTX470/480 would be capable of handling them on high ?
