Menaced
Yeah, I wouldn't really recommend After Effects if you're just wanting to trim clips, add a few (simple) effects and then render a final product, as it requires quite a bit of expertise to use, it's definately not as beginner-friendly as Sony Vegas. Sony Vegas on the other hand, can do all of the above quickly and simply. As it's name suggests, After Effects is more of an advanced effects suite. I would say Adobe's closest thing to Sony Vegas would be Premiere.

Menaced
Or, you could probably use CamStudio which is free and doesn't have such tight restrictions, unlike the unregistered version of Fraps. Though, there are a few set backs. If you don't have a monster machine, recording can get quite choppy as I don't think CamStudio was intended to record video game footage. I'd stick with Fraps, even if the unregistered version only records for like 30 seconds (?) But if it's the watermark that irritates you, you can quite simply edit it out in Sony Vegas. While we're at it, where could I find Sony Vegas free? Right now, I'm using Camtasia Studio (which, by the way, allows you to record the screen) to edit videos, but I've heard wonders about Sony Vegas. lt_yao
You can use an editor such as: Windows movie maker (which is free) or something a bit more pricey like Sony Vegas, which I am using. This might be helpful for you if you wanna do high quality videos on Windows movie maker: Or just a simple tutorial on how to make videos in general on "WMM": http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Video-in-Windows-Movie-Maker Edit: Oh my, this is one old thread that just got bumped. Node
I use fraps because it's one on the best out there. If there was a screen recorder which doesn't bring my PC to a complete halt when it's recording and has the quality of fraps. I'd gladly ditch it. Here is the trial version, if you like it then you can always go back after your first trial and get it again, or you could buy it. If you are a student, you can buy the full versin for much less than the full retail price which is somewhere around £500. Now I mention it the student version is currently unavailable but you can always nab this one. This comes in at around £40.00 will Amazon's discount and unless I misunderstood what you wanted it does all which you wish to do.
