Extra characters for registering usernames

Recommended Posts

I was wondering why when registering a new account users can only add certain characters, however I couldn't help but notice an exception to this rule. A member has registered a name which contains Greek characters.

I was simply wondering why only a few characters are allowed. I think that at least the following letters should be added:

Ä/ä, Ö/ö, Ü/ü

Simply because they are quite common in people's names and they do add extra scope for registering prospective users before they have to register and find out that they have to have a username which is about 30 characters long and just lends itself to piss taking when they try and leave the GTA boards and concentrate on the one thing that keeps members posting regularly on these boards: The Community.

NB: I know that this is a only a small suggestion, and of little significance/importance to members who have already registered accounts, but I think that it is a pretty good idea. And who knows? Maybe it could help GTAF appeal more to the German market? tounge.gif

I could be completely wrong about that though.

Yup. tounge.gif Until about a month ago the forum accepted virtually any character for usernames - remember this place runs on v1.3, I doubt any of the standards or practices newer IPBs follow are shared with a version this old. Until we rehaul some of the code and get our encoding sorted, having more than a limited selection of ASCII characters will continue to cause login issues on other network sites.

Fair point well made there. And thanks for the reply. icon14.gif
