Since Obama has been scheduling to mine asteroids in 2025 I need your all of your opinions. How should they mine the asteroids? How should they design the spacecraft nessecary for mining asteroids

They should make a spaceship with a really big drill.

I think that about sums it up.

Makes sense to cancel the moon program and go to asteroids. Perfect sense.

Well, I think we're going to have to develop a few major new technologies before it happens. Extraorbital space stations, for starters.

The man thinks he's a Kennedy? He can't bring home the soldiers because there's no jobs for'em, so he's gonna make a new spaceage industry without any inve$tment? Without inve$tment there can't be funding for such out-of-this-world thinking. mercie_blink.gif

^But it's vastly better than Bush's wasteful goal of going to the Moon, AGAIN. It is cheaper to go to an asteroid and we can reap more rewards going to it. Obama doesn't think he's Kennedy, he think that NASA should have a more useful goal of NOT going to the Moon (the exact opposite of Kennedy...). Right now we have scant knowledge about asteroids. If one were to come, we would have to make wild guesses on what to do. The more research we can have on asteroids, the better we can understand on how to avoid a catastrophe. The money allocated for the canceled Moon mission should go to this. Better yet, we should go directly to Mars. The time and resources should not be wasted on anything that's not Mars. We should be able to go there with today's technology anyway, so why not have a plan to put the first person on Mars right now?

Um, 2025 is a long way away. Whose to say that Obama will be in any position to schedule anything by that point? The way his current publicity is going, he'll be out come 2012.

I wonder if this is another one of those hair-brained DoD/NASA ploys like putting giant tungsten telegraph poles in orbit with guidance chips to drop them on Russian cities, or building space mounted coilguns/railguns for delivering nuclear payloads? Either way, I can see a large number of very obvious, very glaring flaws in it as a long-term space exploration plan.

We'll probably have robots get crap out of the asteroids until the belt's gone too. I think Japan today most closely resembles the future for the rest of us. They already got robots and such working in the Gundam factories.

Interesting. Strip-mining entire planets? Discuss.

Strikes me that we'll need to be able to do it way before we actually can.

I think that if you mine the asteroid or drill it, you will turn one big problem into many problems because the asteroid will crack on many parts which would be smaller and lighter, but faster than the ''whole big'' asteroid. Let's assume that only half of the cracked parts of the asteroid enter the Earth's atmosphere...It would cause smaller but not so small parts of asteroid falling on many places on Earth. That wouldn't be good. I think that we should send something into the space that would intercept the asteroid and change the direction of it and point it somewhere else and not to the Earth. Please explain how breaking an object up in a vacuum will cause it to accelerate. As far as I understand that's against the laws of physics.

I think the "mining asteroids" discussion somehow got misconstrued into "mining the asteroid coming for Earth 2012 zomgz."

Do you even have any idea what you're talking about? Don't pretend to care about the environment when you don't know how we're destroying it.

Chances are that you used electricity coming from a power plant fueled by coal, you've probably littered garbage that isn't degradable which subsequently drains to the ocean by runoff, you probably haven't recycled as much as you could, you're using the water that comes from underground aquifers which contributes to its depletion, you've farted thus contributing to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the list goes on.

If you want to survive in the society we built then realize that what you're doing is harming the environment no less than everybody else and take a share of the blame. Otherwise, please leave and go live in the woods where you can judge how uncouth the bears are.

No, no. Not in vacuum. When the cracked parts come to our atmosphere, they all will be at the same speed level as the big asteroid. It could cause big damages to buildings, houses, roads etc.

That made even less sense. See highlighted bit for my earlier contention- the asteroid 1) wouldn't nessesarily break up and 2) if it did, that would not cause an increase in acceleration, as it would be occurring inside a vacuum (i.e space) and there would therefore be no accelerating force. Actually, thinking about it logically, if anything it would slow them down as the gravitational pull from other planets affects larger objects more than it does smaller ones, and without any drag or air resistance to overcome it would result in a greater accelerational effect.

It might also be worth pointing out that small pieces of asteroid hit the earth all the time. Small is good, small burns up on entry into the atmosphere.
