Bring Back The Magic!

Remember when you first played Vice City? The Miami Skyline, the setting sun, the Hawaiian shirts, Rosenburg who looked like the guy from Carlito's way, the Scarface mansion, the sports cars, the bikini roller skaters. It was amazing, it ust gave you that amazing feeling, living out a fantasy in an excellent recreation. The same goes for San Andreas, the drive buys, the gangsters, Hollywood, the country, San Fransisco hills, the lights of Vegas... it was all there. This is what seperates GTA from other games. The similarities to films, the similar characters and situations, the music from that era... the hilarious talk stations, the famous actor doing the voiceover.

Some of this was lost in IV. Sure, it was a modern day marvel in New York, very Soprano-esque. But it just didn't have that magic. The characters weren't as good, some of the fun was just sucked out. I think this is the direction Rockstar needs to head back to...

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

See, that's the thing. I didn't get that from San Andreas. Maybe it has something to do with the changes to the PC version. Maybe it's about the atmosphere being killed once you get past Los Santos.

I see where your coming from man. I enjoyed the homage to the respective decades that Vice and San Andreas delivered. The eighties couldn't possibly be done any better than Vice and Vice City Stories. Same goes for San Andreas. But that's where my hope sort of gets lost. The Cultural spark of the eighties was great because of things like Scarface and Miami Vice. But what about nowadays? What great gangster films does the current decade even offer us? The only possibly direction for Rockstar to go is forward, or Seventies prior.

GTA4 was only 'epic' because of the hype of it.

I mean, everyone saw the trailers; a crazy step from the old gen of

gaming to these graphics we have now!

IMO, it only became one of the greatest game's in these 3 years because,

1- It was hyped to the max

and

2- It was one of the first PS3 games (for PS3 users), Plus of it's next gen graphics.

It's now modern days, 2008. Is the GTA we loved back in the past?

Is it time to move on?

I miss them days, and GTA brings back the memories of them days and make GTA.

Miami (Vice), if it was connected to our world (Like GTA4 was) it would have no crime. I mean,

all the crime has been sucked out of it.

Don't know about NY, (Liberty).

How about San Andreas... what's really more to add on to it.

My idea of the next GTA would be either in one of the SA citys. A game based in between 2003-2006 either in

Liberty or Vice (maybe something happened). A new city or GTA, IMO... it's dead.

I really didn't like GTA4 in our time, our year.

It didn't make much sense to me!?

GTA is back in late 2000 and before. It's the past, that's what all the Grand Theft Auto's have been.

A time between between 2003-2006 in Liberty.

A year after GTA3.

You could play as a criminal with a massive record of murder. The governemt assign you to become a hitman, they let

you out of prison but instead you run away.

What do you think?

whats with all the hate on 4?

I loved IV, but it lost the glamorous originality that GTA was known for. Rockstar really had taken it to a new direction, and I'm just wondering if it would be possible to take it back.

Remember the first trailer from GTA 4? Pure magic.

The hype reached an immense level. Still, I think people will like GTA 4 more when it isn't the latest in the series. Fans from all games usually tend to nitpick the newest entry of the series.

Then people will say "Remember back in GTA 4 how amazing etc".

Not really that, as much as we just seem to look at the past through a rose-coloured glass. I know that's what you were getting at, but the literal quote that you provided doesn't sit right with me as much as accepting the fact that there is always errors of the past.

I fully agree mate with every point you make, yes GTA IV was still an epic game but once you got near the end of it i think it lost that magic. But with Vice City, SanAndreas and even GTA III, they never lost it from start to finish and i can recall never getting bored of Vice City as a setting as it all just fitted perfectly.

The fun being sucked out was a big thing for me...the game was really good...to a point but...it was less fun for some reason, things i noticed.

The storyline wasn't that...personal or funny, i liked san andreas how you had your gang to protect and stuff, and on vice city how you have your best friend vance.

cars seem to go slower (way more realistic) but it wasn't fun to speed around everywhere anymore, not everything has to be realistic, a game is an escape from reality

No races to go do when the storyline is over

The cops getting on your ass everytime you so much as punch someone, i liked the others when you could just beat the sh*t out of loads of people without real attention (in real life cops aren't often in places where fights happen)

LC was just a teeny bit gloomy, it never really seemed sunny...it was always grayish.

sh*tty safehouses.

all these little things sorta made the game a little boring for me.

Aside from that it was great

Maybe it's about the atmosphere being killed once you get past Los Santos.

yeah after that it sorta loses touch, it becomes too im-personal...until the last few missions, where you get to kill polaski and the last mission where you get to f*ck up big smoke, too bad he didn't change his mind in the end...and also when tenpenny dies it's real satisfying, you sorta feel bad for tenpenny, then suddenly he busts out with someone asshole comment then when hes dead and everyones gone.

CJ: See you around, officer.

CJ: Yeah, but your right - I was a busta, when my family needed me the most. Hey, I let Brian die, man. This one's for him... for moms... and for you bro!

Sweet: Yeah, for the Grove Street, baby.

CJ: Yeah, for the Grove, baby!

Thats some quotes from the last mission, things like that make the game more...personal...it makes you say to yourself "yeah for the GROVE BABY"

"We have nostalgia for the past because it is gone. If it comes back we would hate it."

Thats not true, i went back and played the other games a little while ago, and they still have that magic touch...i think rockstar needs a popular film writer to give em a hand.

Also i have stopped playing IV for fun, i play the others for fun instead.

I agree with all the points here. The previous GTAs, especially VC and some bits in SA, has a very cinematic feeling in it. You feel like you watching a good gangster movie rather playing a game. But IV, to me, is like watching a good TV crime show (like the Sopranos or CSI NY). It is very gritty and realistic, but just like in the TV shows, too many repeated elements and lack that grandiose cinematic feeling. IV feels more like The Wire than something like Scarface or even Heat.

@ The Unvirginiser

I know what you mean indeed. I dont mind having all that back either way.

However I will bring up an interesting point that I read in an article from a UK gaming magazine called EDGE. The article was about GTA 4's development and was published a good while before it came out, and it featured an interview one of GTA's co-creators, Sam Houser. Houser had gave a number of reasons as to why Rockstar did not want to go back to Hollywood movie and TV-inspired crime/gangster themes for GTA 4, unlike the previous last-generation GTAs.

Houser stated that he did not want the player to feel too consumed in the feeling of playing a protagonist inspired by a movie or TV show. He felt that if there was too much emphasis on movies/TV shows, the player would not feel like the character was really their own, but that of a movie/TV show. He further explained that in order for the player to really connect with GTA 4's protagonist, the best way to achieve this was to remove any connection whatsoever with recognizable movie or TV material. This way, he explained, the player will identify only with the character(s) and content portrayed within the game itself and from nowhere else - thus, giving the player more of an original experience that is unique to GTA 4 that is seen or inspired from no outside source or influence.

Houser's other reason for GTA 4 not going in the same visual concept and direction as previous GTAs, was that Hollywood movies and TV shows were mostly used to inspire two of the last-gen GTA games, because there was a lot of relevant and rich media material that reflected the time periods and crime eras that were depicted within the games. For instance, Vice City was based on Miami's cocaine wars of the 1980s (Miami Vice/Scarface). In the case of San Andreas, it was the 1990s Los Angeles street gang battles between the Bloods and Crips, and the Mexican gangs (Boyz in the Hood, Menace II Society). The movie and TV show material was no longer relevant for GTA 4, as Rockstar had decided that GTA 4 would be based on modern-day times and that it was no longer using movie/TV show material as a main source of inspiration and influence, due to the other reasons stated.

I see what Rockstar were trying to do here and I understand it and agree with it. I felt Rockstar definitely succeeded in creating their own distinct identity for GTA 4 away from outside media influences. After playing GTA 4 many of us can all now related to the experience of playing as Niko, an immigrant coming to Liberty City to begin a new life of crime and mayhem and we can now idenitfy with all the related characters like Luis or Johnny. We can only remind ourselves of these experiences only by playing GTA 4, and not also by watching movies/TV shows.

However I felt that Rockstar did fail in making GTA 4 as fun, enjoyable and memorable as the previous, last-gen GTAs. There were many good things present in the previous GTAs not seen in GTA 4. That is another matter thats been discussed many times on here already, so I wont go into that any further on here !! Regardless of my disappointments, I still enjoyed playing the whole GTA 4 saga nonetheless.

@ Niko Vercetti - Damn I do miss that game Vice City, I really do! It is my favourite GTA game. VC is probably the best video game I've ever played.

It was a great scene. But I gotta say my favorite scene of all time is the scene in the mission Supply & Demand where Tommy Vercetti walks over to Lance Vance and Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung is playing in the background. Damn! What a scene that was! it starts at 1:16.

Let's face it, regardless of which GTA you prefer, we all know that San Andreas had more stuff to do.

You had a country side you could 4-wheel through, planes to fly, properties to own, etc, etc.

For me, that is why SA was the best GTA game thus far. The fun value and reply value were off the charts.

GTA 4 is great too, but not as fun.

I mean in a way you're right but I just don't know. Put it this way if San Andreas were a new game that just came out for PS3 and 360 and it was in HD with multiplayer and all then maybe it'd be the best one of all just maybe.
