Neo Phontane
hey guys, i've heard, gta 4 has a dolby digital 5.1 ouput - is this right? well, i just can choose between stereo and headphones in the audio menu. i have the pc version and i have the pc connected to the AV-receiver (onkyo 508) with hdmi - so this should work fine. it does work fine for videos. how can i choose surround??? thanks! meson1
I can confirm GTA:IV does do 5.1 output. Check your windows control panel settings and your driver settings. GTA:IV won't show you the surround options in the audio menu until you've specified your speaker set up in the windows sound control panel. I'm only familiar with my own setup so I can't really be any more specific than that. There may be other guys on here that may be able to help you better. But you'll need to post your system details, e.g. O/S, sound card, etc. etc. Edited November 2, 2010 by meson1
Neo Phontane
os: windows 7 x64 sound card: Realtek HDMI Output/ATI HDMI Audi max. number of channels: 8 see soundcard details here: so this really should work and surround output DOES work fine for all other apps (players etc) but why GTA 4 does not show me the sourround output option?? thanks in advance! Stinky12
The setting you have picked won't work as that is directly from your video card. AMD Radeon graphics since the HD2000 series has build in audio codec, but in order for that to work, you much connect your screen through HDMI. In the list of audio items, you have to select the 2nd device and your default. Then in the Realtek audio control panel, select 5.1 speaker output. The Realtek audio control is a red speaker icon, not that gray normally found in Windows.
Neo Phontane
The Realtek audio control is a red speaker icon, not that gray normally found in Windows. this was the right hint - thank you stinky! the sentences before were wrong: 1. i do have connected my sreen through hdmi from the AV-receiver, as i said in the first post. 2. the second audio device in the list was not my hdmi-output, but my analog klink output, which of course is not 5.1able. the first device was the right one. so i choose 5.1 in the realtek audio control panel for hdmi output, then i was able to choose surround-side in the gta 4 audio options and then i got a 5.1-PCM-stream at my AV-receiver (via hdmi), which definately sounds much more better than the stereo setting. BUT: the box of the game says: Dolby Digital(!) 5.1. but i "only" get a 5.1-pcm-stream - no dolby-digital-stream. i googled for this problem and got many hits people having the same problem but no solution. (http://www.google.com/search?q=gta+4+dolby+digital+pcm) so if anybody managed to get a true dolby digital output from gta 4 pc version, please let me know!! this would be just a little more nice.
