1GB HD 5770 from 256MB HD 3850

Hi,

 

I'm currently running a 256MB HD 3850 that constantly lags (obviously...). Will a 1GB HD 5770 solve my performance problems or is there more that needs to be done?

 

I already have an AMD Athlon II X4 620 so I doubt my CPU is the bottleneck.

 

The rest of my system is in my signature.

Your CPU will be (isn't currently) a bottleneck after you upgrade your GPU, but if all you are looking for is smooth framerates with medium settings than you will be more than fine with your current setup and a 5770.

 

With medium settings (I assume you run low textures now) you should average well above 30 FPS in almost all area's with your new card depending obviously on your resolution but even at HD you should be in great shape.

My guess is about 35-38FPS as that's what I got with my 512 card which is quite similar to your pick, more VRAM can only give you better performance. Do mind the shadow settings, though. Those have a devilish impact on performance.

The 5770 is a decent mid range card, so you should get a worthy performance increase.

I would upgrade to a HD6850. Its got 256 bit and is more future proof for only some bucks more.

Makes no Sense since the HD6850 is only up to 6% slower (maybe 10% in rare worst case scenario) than the 5850, but 130$ cheaper.
