I'm not surprised. Don't these teen TV stars give up their life to become actors? They violently transition from tween to adult, and the pressure to perform to keep other people employed, on top of which you have to drop out of school, and you don't get the perceived regular high school experience.

What really sucks is hating something simply because it's mainstream, in some attempt to come off as edgy, or "switched on" unlike the rest of society, as some sort of non-conformist. When in reality all that happens is you conform to the standards of another group who think themselves non-conformist, like 4chan or something akin to that, where you hate things simply because they are popular outside of your sphere. e.g. Got any evidence that this girl is destined to become the next "Miss Whore Of The Universe"? Didn't think so.

 

As for the actual topic, I've only really heard the name in passing and honestly don't know much about the girl. It's pretty sad whenever you see anyone get struck down with depression though, especially those who are trapped by the spotlight, making a downward cycle even harder to escape from.

 

Do you really got to rehab for depression though? I would've thought it would be something less associated with vices like alcohol or illegal drugs. I guess "rehabilitation"'s a pretty broad word though, and could be slapped on a lot of treatment plans.

Well, you're right. Many people are probably going th-f*ck, many people are DEFINITELY going through worse than she is. But those people don't have cameras pointed at them 24/7. She's still human and she's still depressed.

Depression is very much associated with those things. Keep in mind that depression is not finding joy in life, or even things you usually find joy in.

 

 

Alcohol, drugs, and getting all-around trashed are quick ways to enjoy life and forget your problems. I mean, it's usually the 'life of the party' (due to alcohol) that is the saddest one in the room

Each to his own of course, so there's nothing wrong with disagreeing with that sort of thing, but it's still insensitive to hate on someone because they happen to want to be famous, there's nothing really wrong with being "materialistic" either. I haven't actually heard of this person before as I generally ignore Disney culture nowadays, but she's still a human being suffering from depression, and that's just as medically harmful as someone who's in the working class and suffering from depression. It's kinda like the cliché that money doesn't necessarily buy you happiness; I think that fits perfectly in this situation...

I do recognise depression as an illness, but I think so many people possess it undiagnosed that the sheer commonness of the disorder can assist those suffering from it. Nonetheless, I've studied psychology before and have seen the effects on people who've suffered depression first-hand; there are people out there who are highly successful yet still feel miserable, so I don't think that it's necessarily because they need to 'get their life into order'.

Hating on something/one simply because it/they are famous and rich is just a mixture of jealousy and a desperate strive to be seen as edgy and cool.

I understand where you're coming from, but on the flip side; you can't hate her simply because she's famous.

 

Saying 'Guy X has depression' isn't as remarkable as saying 'Celebrity has depression'. That celebrity has a face people recognize. Don't tell me you wouldn't stop in your tracks if you saw [Celebrity] at a train stop begging for money. Likewise, don't deny that you've seen/passed by homeless people countless of times without giving it much thought.
