Stinky12
Stupid question, but what is this pop-in stuff? I've checked out Youtube and all the video quality to this problem are crap and can't really see anything. I was driving a Comet down on Star Junction at very high speed, then all of a sudden it came to a crashing stop and Niko flew out of the windshield as if there is a invisible wall in the middle of the road. Does that consider to be a pop-in?

Does that consider to be a pop-in? Have a look at these - right click to watch them on You Tube (at 1080p): Popin in patch 6 and 7 - look at the way the trees are rendered in particular - that's pop-in Compare to patch 5 with the fly over at middle park from 0:33 - trees far in the distance used to blur into view They're both on the same PC, so I can only conclude this got worse with patches 6 and
Stinky12
In that video, I notice the tree pop-ins, but IMHO I don't see it as a flaw. When your far away from a area, its pointless to render all the objects and only necessary when you get close.

Isn't this somehow fixed with the detail distance or view distance ? , I hardly ever notice it in any case. cidamelo
I don't know why so many people hate GTA IV, I think it's awesome, I assume I thought maybe it was bad before I bought it, because a lot of people said it was terrible, but I loved the game!!!! Spider-Vice
i highly doubt you have no pop in, even on my system i have mild pop in and texture fill, its bad coding. unless of course you have a better system then mine? Well thing is I reformatted my PC and after I installed nvidia drivers I had (and have) NO POP-UP and my system is utter sh*t. (C2Q, nvidia gt 220). On-topic: My IV is stable, doesn't lag a lot, I can play for hours. Whether or not you describe it as a "flaw", I was trying to point out it has got worse with patches 6 and 7. Hence I put the two videos for comparison. It doesn't ruin the game to be honest - I still think it's great, but it doesn't look as good as it used to either. It's just a shame because it feels like they went backwards with the patches, not forwards! To sjaak327's point, changing the draw distance makes no difference. In both videos it was set to 100 - lowering it neither seems to increase or decrease this kind of pop-in - or any of the other sliders for that matter (I've tried turning shadows off completely, as I know they made a major change with these). Nor do any of the command lines.
mkey82
You know, I find it interesting when people need to fling around the "uh, I modded this game for hours and hours to no end" argument to prove a point. I have played GTAIV for about 40 hours and I doubt I'll be playing it anymore, but at same time I could say that I have about 4000 posts in the troubleshooting section of this board and have a rough idea of what exactly people are complaining about:- Furthermore, I understand you were stating you opinion, but what I find usually the best route is to add "in my opinion" or "in my case" when making "rock solid" statements. Just to give a better idea to some unsuspecting reader, that's all. This game is far from broken, but it's also far from being rock stable, in a general case. I can name at least five major issues with the game that are not software, OS nor hardware related, issues R* themselves (the makers of this rock solid masterpiece) . It simply is NOT always the error on user end. In that video, I notice the tree pop-ins, but IMHO I don't see it as a flaw. When your far away from a area, its pointless to render all the objects and only necessary when you get close. This is the inherent property. When you are far away, there is no need to use the more detailed object when you can barely see them. As you approach the object, it will at some point replaced by a more detailed one and you'll probably see the switch, hence the popup. This process will usually be split in a few parts where the less detailed object gets replaced in a few stages with more and detailed objects until it reaches the most detailed version. What people usually complain about in GTAIV, is the massive delay you get in your immediate vicinity, like you turn around and for a second or two the building that was behind you is drawn with some low quality texture. This is obviously caused by the delayed texture loading process, as the system can't draw something it doesn't have at hand at the moment. More VRAM you have (on a capable card), less times will the system have to look for textures on slower "devices" like the system RAM or the very slow HDD.
