TheAnyKey
Hi, just did the Game-O-Meter test for GTA IV with this result: "Yes! Your system meets the Game-o-Meter recommendation for Grand Theft Auto IV. It should run perfectly on your computer at very high visual settings." With everything maxed out the Benchmark gave me ~27 FPS and the actual game was too laggy to even play it. Now I have all settings on "High", Resolution on 1024x768(60 Hz), Texture Filter Quality Anisotropic x2, View distance 35, Detail Distance 40, V-Sync Off, Definition On, Shadow Detail: Medium, Nightshadow Detail: Medium Results: CPU-Usage: 55% Sys-Memory-Usage: 81% Video-Memory-Usage: 35% 45.22 FPS in the Benchmark with these settings but while playing the actual game it is still lagging very badly. Edit: GTA IV Patch version: 1.0.7.0. What is wrong? Is my PC to slow? My PC: CPU: 1090T RAM: 4GB Gfx: HD 5970 OS: Win 7 64 Bit Professional Thanks a lot. Kenster1025
Did you make sure you put all the RAM timings in correctly in the BIOS, and that the video card is in the PCI-E 2.0 16x slot and not a lower performing PCI-E 4x or 8x slot? Is your motherboard a AM3 or AM2/AM2+ board, because you could be getting a bottleneck just because you are running that 1090T on a older board, also you might want to update the BIOS. You should run a 3D Mark Vantage or a PC Mark benchmark, even though they are not gear toward GTA IV specifically, they will tell you where you PC actually stands on FPS. Ken The free trial version of 3D Mark 06 gave me a score of 20723 some time ago, SM 2.0 7296, SM 3.0 10696, CPU Score 5736. Haven't tried 3D Mark Vantage yet. Motherboard is an ASUS M4A89TD Pro/USB 3 Dunno if the gfx car is in the x16 slot. I just put the RAM in without doing anything in the BIOS. But my PC seems to struggle outside of games too. Youtube videos for instance are lagging ofthen, scrolling with the mousewheel lags often etc. @Garfield 2 GTA IV Patch version: 1.0.7.0. Dwagginz
Firstly, why is V-Sync off? It should smooth out the game visually for you. Does it happen when you run at your monitor's native resolution? Is it just as bad? Is it worse?
TheAnyKey
@Dwagginz Some guy at overclock.net told me it would enhance the performance when V-Sync is turned off. I have a 19", what's my native resolution, 1280x1024? It seems tu run about the same compared to 1024x768, but I'm not sure, don't notice a big difference. Garfield 2
Try to install a clean copy and Patch 1.0.0.4 (not 1.0.4.0) and check if your expierience is better

It's sad that you have spend a ton of money on this fancy build and yet don't know how to use it. The graphic card you have "HD5970" actually has two graphic chips build in. So technically your running on CrossFire X. In order to take advantage of CrossFire X, you will need to play that game at insane resolutions. Running this game at 1024x768 is not going to get the card to release it full potential and right now it's basically snoozing. You will need to run the card at least 1920x1200 or above like 2560x1600 2560x1600 are found on 30" LCD monitors. If your screen's max resolution is only 1024x768, then you have just wash all your money down the drain. In the benchmark above, you can see this card running at 2560x1600 will get you 62.24FPS* *different system configurations will yield in different results, but shouldn't have dramatic differences. mkey82
If anything, this benchmark shows GTAIV doesn't profit from multi GPU solutions.
Dwagginz
@Dwagginz Some guy at overclock.net told me it would enhance the performance when V-Sync is turned off. Well, "some guy" was wrong. V-Sync caps your frame rate in order to smooth out the game visually (i.e. the frame rate shouldn't be jumping up and down like kids on a bouncy castle) and it reduces the chance of screen tearing. It does not affect how the game performs. It's something you only turn off if you have issues with it being on (e.g. screen flickering).
TheAnyKey
Could the CPU be too slow? Should I overclock it? @Kenster1025 According to GPU-Z the video card is in the PCI-E 2.0 16x slot

It could be a corrupt OS install, it could be some software on your system causing issues. Overclocking might increase the severity of them, but it won't get rid of them. IronHide-AW
...You have computer issues... Definitely. Especially based on the OP stating other things are bad / slow / glitchy including tube videos for god sake. There's no telling how many issues there are combined. Sounds like a fresh start with the OS and creating a base image after the latest drivers and configuration are all squared away.
Stinky12
Could the CPU be too slow? Should I overclock it? @Kenster1025 According to GPU-Z the video card is in the PCI-E 2.0 16x slot The CPU that you have the 1090T is a AMD Phenom II Black Edition. This CPU has six cores running at 3.2GHz and can turbo mode up to 3.6GHz. GTA IV is a multi-threaded game, but can't confirm if it will use the two extra cores you got on your Phenom II. Other things to know about your CPU is, since it's a Black Edition, the cpu is "unlocked", this means is easier for you to overclock it. And the 3.2GHz speed is not shared across the six cores. Each core is actually at 3.2GHz e.g. Core 0 @ 3.2GHz Core 1 @ 3.2GHz, etc... One thing you can try first is install the latest graphic card drivers and see if that helps. mkey82
but can't confirm if it will use the two extra cores you got on your Phenom II. GTAIV will effectively use 3 cores so total processor usage of a quad will max at 75%, on an i7 with HT enabled it will go up to 37,5%. Other cores may (will) show some load, but that comes from the load balancing as the system will use all cores instead of maxing out only some of them. No amount of overclocking will solve those issues, with the worst case scenario being an increased frequency of them. I think the OP needs to either reinstall the OS from scratch or spend a day or two meticulously updating as many drivers and pieces of software as possible whilst trying to locate the issue. Virus scans, malware scans, defrags, registry cleans - The whole lot. The mouse should not be lagging, nor should YouTube, especially in this day-and-age and with a system that powerful. Something is fundamentally wrong and it would need to be sorted before considering anything else, especially overclocking.
