WhistleBlower
A lot of people know that at the end of the day it's a business to develop and release videogames. But it's because of the constant rise in cost of creating videogames that developers don't take as many risks as they used to in the past. The point is that sooner or later the majority of people are simply going to get sick of GTA. And then what? I'm pretty sure Rockstar knows this. They've been experimenting with other projects like Red Dead Redemption and their newest most ambitious project, Agent. They've got a lot of other established IPs like Manhunt, Bully, Max Payne, Midnight Club etc. to fall back on. I think Rockstar just wants to play it safe with the 'new' interpretation of the same three locations and 'exile goes/returns to crime-infested dump' storyline. But that doesn't mean I like it, and I certainly don't respect it with all of the money they're making. So, that being said, can you blame me if I were to say that depending on what direction they take with the next GTA, I'll either buy the game or lose interest in the series as a whole? If you haven't played the games for as long as I have then you probably don't understand.

ldee
wow that story really speaks to me...I don't think GTA is going to die. Look at GTA4. In a couple of minutes of browsing the GTA V subforum I have never seen more irrational bullsh*t that has come from one person than you. On-topic: Quite true, GTA may not have as much novelty as it did back in the mid 2000s, so I like how they're going with different franchises following different genres. Who knows, we might even see an RPG coming from them, they've proven brilliant whatever kind of videogame they create. GTA still has potential though, although I did get bored of EFLC really, really quickly, there are still plenty of horizons expendable in the franchise that could keep me coming back excited to get playing. Even ideas of VC and SA remakes fit into this, or perhaps even the next generation's tech could stimulate my gaming adrenaline.
Algonquin Assassin
I've been playing GTA titles for over 12 years, and I don't exactly agree about it not being fresh anymore. There are still many possibilities for the series. IMHO I believe some people are just simply getting tired of the wait for some information. I reckon as soon as there is some info alot of the interest will be injected back in. Of all the sandbox games I've played one has stuck out compared to all others in terms of marketing, hype, and general reception, and that's RDR. Which is made by R*. RDR has to be the closest thing to filling GTA's shoes if it were to go. Well to me atleast. I think it's great R* are attempting different themes, and genres. I've always felt they do an excellent job at doing things most companies wouldn't do. They probably realize GTA has stiff competition, and wont be around forever, but atleast the series hasn't been run into the ground. I think R* have too much respect for this great series to do that to it.
Dwagginz
I don't think GTA is gone, yet. I think there's still plenty of life in it! There's not many competitors in the market (Just Cause, Saints Row, Driver for a brief period, uh... I'll get back to you) and the ones that do exist have never hit the numbers GTA did. I believe GTA IV smashed some pre-order records on various websites, but I could be wrong on that bit of info. GTA stands as the champion and I suspect it will do for some years to come because no-one has come close to the success of GTA. Whilst GTA IV was, arguably, a lesser title than San Andreas, the series has gone from strength to strength since III, and I'm sure that the next game after IV will prove they've not lost it. Darrel
And a franchise like Call of duty hasn't? It's the same sh*t every year with a different skin. The object of the game is to run around and kill (online as that's what people play). I have no idea how people can still play that game for long periods of time all day, but you know what, they do. Grand theft auto does not come every year, it's been 2 and a half years since Gta IV. And the next game in franchise not really expected out anytime soon. Id say another year, and thats at least. People are going to go crazy for it.
maxopower
I don't think GTA is going to lose it's atraction, not for me atleast. For me it's all about the location, f*ck the mechanics. Anyway... GTA IV was toned down in many ways, no airplanes, not much customization, etc. But still the game sold millions just on the first day. Besides, GTA is a brand, just like Zelda, Mario, Coca cola and Paris Hilton. No matter how bad they f*ck it up people still buy it.
SirPsychoSexy
As long as R* keeps innovating it won't die. GTA IV is a game far from any of the one's in the III-era, with IV R* lost some fans but also gained new. Me for example, I enjoyed the old ones, but it was IV that really got me with the realism. The GTA concept is old, but the games can still feel fresh. IV was really fresh when it came out, I think we feel that it's a bit old because R* has milked LC on almost all it's got with the Episodes, something I really appreciate that they did though. My guess is that all that is needed for it to feel fresh again is a new location, a more realistic VC or San An included. Simple and pure, GTA is hot, but when the next one's announced, it's gonna be burning.
Official General
I do not think that the GTA series are not fresh anymore, and I certainly do not see GTA games losing their attraction and interest from gamers anytime soon. GTA can still be refreshed, feel more newer and still provide a unique experience on different occassions. GTA 4 certainly achieved this to some degree and it still looked refreshingly new and amazing, depsite its many flaws. I think there is still plenty of room for improvement in gameplay and there is massive potential for updating and creating new, cool content and features, especially with all this advanced console technology that is now available. Just look at the sheer amount of great ideas and concepts that Rockstar had left out of GTA 4 and even worse, some of them were found in older GTA titles. Look at the great success of Red Dead Redemption and all the amazing things seen in that game that could have been implemented in GTA IV. Plus Rockstar have only used their relatively new Euphoria engine on only two occasions, for GTA 4 and Red Dead - they still need to get the best out of it and use it to its maximum potential power. Newer and updated versions of Vice City and San Andreas could definitely offer new and exciting experiences with the latest console and software technology and HD graphics. Maybe once Rockstar have done that with VC and SA, we gamers and maybe Rockstar themselves will be more open to the idea of taking GTA in a whole, new different direction with totally new cities as settings. Until then, there is still a lot of work to be done, a lot of new technology to explore and utilize, another set of GTA games to be made, and a lot of hungry GTA fans/customers to serve. I think your talk of GTA going stale is a bit too premature just yet. Let us just see what Rockstar comes up with next for future GTA titles for the duration of this gaming generation. We can't judge conclusively until every GTA game this generation is released and been played through. We just gotta wait and see what happens. But I'll admit, I'm getting very tired of not hearing any news at all about the next GTA game. The last game that I bought, played and completed that caught my interest and that I really enjoyed playing was Red Dead Redemption on my PS3. That was a while ago now, back in May and nothing else interests me right now. I wanna hear at least some kind of news ! SammiiDoogles
Look at some of the threads here people have made for concepts of the next GTA, if thats any indication then theres still a lot of ideas untested that they could do with GTA. I think they could do so much more with GTA so I dont think its going anywhere any time soon - they've got loads they can still do.

Official General
NOOOO I love GTA IT CAN'T END!!! @ cidamelo I dont know if your English is not that good or what, but no one on here said GTA was going to end, well not anytime soon anyway. The subject here is whether many of GTA's original fans will lose interest in the series at some stage unless some kind of great and radical changes are made to the gameplay. Did you actually understand that ? Edited October 29, 2010 by Official General
Pac.
Hmm... My economics teacher told me that in his lessons if you were asleep and that you were asked a question and woke up, a very good and reasonable answere to the question you missed would be "It depends". i think this also applies here, i'm just not sure or in the right frame of mind right now to ellaborate,
GTAOCD
I have no idea how people can still play that game for long periods of time all day, but you know what, they do. It's the Challenges my friend, and that small sense of notoriety that you get upon completing challenges. I'm 20 HS away from getting 1000 HS with my FAMAS rifle. >_<
Pac.
There is still lots left to explore, the reason i think that we say it isn't fresh anymore is the ammount of ideas and concepts that have been done in this whole V section. There is lots that was left out in IV, that can return in future games. Storylines always matter aswell, and as far as i know, there are always new story's, and original ones too. Capricornus
I cannot see how the GTA franchise would die out but Madden doesn't. Just like Darrel said, it's the same sh*t with a different skin. GTA gives us something different with each new game most of the time, and it's a great game that you do not get every single year. A lot of people like to cry about GTA at times, and yet those are the same ones that go out and buy it right away. The franchise will not die out any time soon. sh*t, GTA IV might have just been the tip of the Iceberg. Let's see.

Rucke
Just because they are taking a break and discovering new areas it doesn't mean that GTA won't return. It's their biggest money-maker, plus they get better and better everytime they release a new one. It was only a year ago we got TBOGT. Between Vice City and San Andreas there was two years. I know it's officially a DLC, but I think in many people's eyes it was actually a complete game, kinda like LCS or VCS.
